I like HP servers myself. It takes a lot to slow down mysql when configured correctly.

Configuration?

Use SSD drives in your DB server if this is a option..

Dual Intel Quadcore Xeon e5640's
32GB DDR3-1333 ECC RAM
8x80GB Intel 80GB SSD in Raid-10 (yielding a mind numbingly fast 320GB storage volume)

From there, you can implement memcached, or even use a chunk of the servers memory for a ramdisk. There are lots of good options on the software side.

A server like this will be a sickeningly fast, DB shredding machine. :2 cents:

I have a setup similar to this with Dual Quadcore 5640's, and have a hard time getting it to blink no matter how much I throw at it. 2 Thumbs up for the Dual Quadcore 5640's

Yessir! If you can make this system cry, then you are probably in need of one of these.

320 GB storage for a db server? :error

I think the quad core + 32GB RAM though goes a long way to help to the speed, not the storage :winkwink:

My last server was bogging down with traffic and I looked at upgrading packages, then decided to just shell out the cash for to own the server and no longer lease.

Then my traffic dropped like a rock :-)

The Raid-10 out of SSD's portion of what I said is the important part, as far as db serving is concerned. True, most of the 320GB will not be used. Duh. :winkwink:

Also, using the right sized stripe in that array is very important too - something most people forget.

if you want it fast you need high end server the best you can buy
and some geeks to set things up... without them hardware is useless

we have two of something similar but a little downgraded... E5520's, 32GB Memory (8x4GB), 1066MHz, 5 146GB 15K's om each.

they handle our databases quite nicely
