The Fairmont Express is old and pricey, but beautiful:

The Westin Grand in Vancouver is a pretty nice, reasonably priced, all-suite hotel:

Also, British Columbia has some really nice bed and breakfast inns...

I wouldn't stay in Vancouver if you wanted to visit Victoria. Just sayin'.

The Fairmont Empress was opened in 1907. While it has been remodeled since then, one of the charms of the hotel is how old it is.

The op was asking about modern hotels, hence I recommended the Westin in Vancouver.

The fact is, there is not much to do in Victoria, especially in comparison to Vancouver.

For me, Victoria is a good overnight or 2-night trip max. It only takes a half-hour to fly from Vancouver to Victoria, and the ferry boats take about two hours, including time in line.
