Anyone pulled out their own stitches before?

Got a few stitches in my hand that need pulling out, thought I might do it myself, anyone else did it before?

TheDoc 02-20-2011 04:11 AM

I have, a few times... If you make it so you can turn them first they wont get stuck when pulling them out.

Kiopa_Matt 02-20-2011 04:19 AM

Several times, and never any issues, except usually whoever's in the room with me at the time bitches and flips out.

What do you mean by, turn them?

Just pull them out ... nothing will happen

You know, slide them in the hole, move the knot over.... like twisting an earring, but it's a stitch. Once you can turn each one, they will come out without pulling on your skin, which can rip the wound back open.

Wicked 1 02-20-2011 04:29 AM

You snip one and give it a twirl from the end to make sure it's not stuck to flesh or scabbed up around the entry/exit point to stop it pulling out plugs of flesh or reopening the wound...that's if they are your stitches it's not necessary to do that for other people when removing them .

How to remove stitches

jaYMan 02-20-2011 04:38 AM

stiches belong in d'niches.

I best go back to bed.

Barry-xlovecam 02-20-2011 06:53 AM

After at least 7 days, clean any scabbing off first with an antiseptic and gauze. You will need a sterile scissors, forceps/pointed tweezers — then do as The Doc said. If the sutures are not loosened and easy to remove — have a professional look at it.

I've done my own, a few pets and my one of my kids.

Amputation?

Seriously, best to have a medical professional do it.

I was being half-sarcastic, but really risks are pretty limited I think... amputation is very unlikely, in the worst case you may get a little infection, but probably nothing some antibiotics won't fix... :2 cents:

Well, kind of.

I had stitches in my hand; actually on two knuckles.
I left the hospital and walked about six blocks and walked right into the
motherfucker who I had hit so hard 2 hours earlier that it split my knuckles and I clocked
that motherfucker again and the stitches popped out.

I thought they only used the self dissolving ones now.

greg80 02-20-2011 12:36 PM

no problem, I get mine always out. Make sure you put some alcohol or other desinfectant on there after you pull them out and you are fine

I am not taking any responsibility if something goes wrong, just letting you know what I do

donkevlar 02-20-2011 01:29 PM

Yep. Just make sure to sanitize that shit afterward.

Barry-xlovecam 02-20-2011 01:54 PM

I sutured up my dog once (to insert "stitches").
Then removed them in a week.
I had threaded veterinary disposable curved surgical needles.
But then he was a dog ...

Amputation? LOL that was in jest ...

Just pull them yourself or let them dissolve. Why waste a doctor's precious time for something any kid could do?
