U.S. accidentally shuts down 84,000 sites
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, in an effort to clamp down on websites that host and advertise child pornography, inadvertently shut down more than 84,000 innocent websites across the Internet.
In a Feb. 15 statement, the DHS announced the seizure of 10 domain names of websites that were believed to host or advertise child pornography. But one of those domains was actually a DNS server that managed hosting for up to 84,000 separate and independent websites, according to online news site torrentfreak.com. Without notice, all 84,000 sites had their content blocked and visitors were re-directed to a Homeland Security banner that read, "This domain name has been seized by the ICE - Homeland Security Investigations, pursuant to a seizure warrant issued by a United States District Court..." followed by a warning about the consequences of distributing child pornography. The error was quickly noticed, but because of the time it takes DNS addresses ? essentially an index of the Internet ? to propogate across the web, some websites still carried the DHS warning up to three days later. "Most of the subdomains in question are personal sites and sites of small businesses," torrentfreak.com wrote. "A search on Bing still shows how innocent sites were claimed to promote child pornography. A rather damaging accusation, which scared and upset many of the sites' owners." |
ooops, nice to know they are abusing their authority the right way
|
I think I'd support these site owners right to claim damages here. You can't go accusing innocent people of being involved in child pornography publicly then simply say sorry, our mistake.

I'd be suing the government for that

I fail to see how CP falls under Homeland Security's mandate

Somehow I don't see "oops" or "sorry" cutting it in this instance.
Welcome to Lawsuit City, POP +84,000 |
If my understanding of the law is correct... and I am certainly not saying it is... you can't sue the federal government if they fuck up trying to protect you... so I think what we will end up with is 84K more pissed off people and that's about it
besides, whats the government going to pay them with? China will owe you money ok? LOL |

Big Sis has you duped. You have more chance of getting killed by a police officer than boogy men with turbin's and beards. DHS already owns you |

A totally fucked up abuse of power. They need to start cutting staff if they can't think of anything better to do to "protect" us.

obviously they made a mistake by taking the dns down too. It was a mistake to take down the other sites no one can dispute that so if you want to bitch about their power obviously you are against govt's shutting down sites that have CP on it. |

"Bitch about their power" lol real kicker... I like you, you're mainstream all the way, tv educated and oblivious to the hoax. |
Blocking sites with child porn on is good. Fucking up like this is very bad. Shows the level of competence the people had who were entrusted with the task.

It's nothing to do with that. What governments have now is a HUGE problem because the internet is lawless, right. We all know rather than use facts, they use fear to get what they want nowadays. So, they bullshit about terrorism and CP in order to gain control of the internet, and then they can censor and control it all they want. The public obv think CP is bad, so when the government say "We are doing this to stop CP" people like Paul Markham actually believe them. That's right! A pornographer is in favour of the government censoring the internet! I know. Crazy! It is this infantile level of trust in The Man that will then be used against freedom over the coming years. The government does not have the experience to understand what the internet is, how to control, censor and regulate it. The UK showed this with the CP album cover fuss . You are in favour of internet regulation, but when internet regulation happens, these sorts of mistakes will happen all the time. As someone that shoots teen porn and says the things you do about finding young girls attractive, I would be very worried about over zealous governments deciding what you shoot is CP and closing your down. You actually buy the bs that this is about piracy, terrorism and CP, and fail to understand all it is about it getting control through fear. |

If you, as a business owner, don't deliver a product or service your clients are willing to pay for, you'll go out of business. If you, as a private individual, cause damage to another individual, your are liable... If a government official doesn't provide a quality service, he still gets paid. If a government official screws up, he isn't liable.... |
