My husband and my 4 kids are my best and most important investments. Some count investments as a monetary thing, I count mine in a much more important way.... to me. :)

My best investment decision is also my worst investment decision. I worked at a start-up VERY early and got a ton of stock options. I exercised about $10,000 in shares at about $0.10 a pop about 10 years ago. The start-up is now a nicely sized company that prints money. I've received about $450K in dividends. Though the company is still private, shares I own are probably worth about $2.00/share. I'm praying they sell the company soon.

On the downside, I had the opportunity to buy many more shares. If I had bought more, I'd be a millionaire. But when I bought the shares for $10K over 10 years ago, I was like, "damn...that's a lot of fucking money....I'm not spending $30K on this..."

So on one hand I'm happy, but on the other hand I'm like "daaaaaamn, I should have bought more!"

In 1978, I bought an old mexican bar with real estate for $5,000 down in the center of what 5 years later became 6th Street in Austin, Texas. I sold the building in about 2000 for almost $500,000.

So out of the millions you've made the only specific example is one that made you $1600 per month. That's what sticks out in your mind?

Sounds like you're lying brah.

I know how you feel. Several years ago I bought some land in the southern part of my state. It was one of those deals where you get it really cheap, but it is very undeveloped. I bought it as something that maybe I would use in the future, if nothing else put a small cabin on it and have a little place to get away from it all.

About five years after I bought it a development company bought it from me (and they bought all the land around my parcel as well) to put up a hotel/resort. They offered me 5 times what I paid for it which was far more than it was worth so I sold and was happy with my profit.

3 years later the resort is being built and another company puts a golf course in. It turns out that course is made by a big name designer and when it is done is one of the best courses in north american. So this place turns into a real hotbed for affluent golfers to travel to. That piece of land would have then been worth about 100times or more what I paid for it. So I made a nice profit, just not an obscene one.

Started buying gold/silver in the 70's. Got over 300+ ounces physical. Some early $20 St Gaudens I bought for around $40 each. With gold at $1400+/- I did VERY VERY WELL in my opinion. And, I still believe it's a good investment. ESPECIALLY SILVER. Have about 2500 physical ounces on hand. Some I bought for 2-3 dollars an ounce. :thumbsup

Domain backorders - these have been really good for me. I setup the custom search to monitor keywords Im looking for and then the site emails me a list of domains with those keyword combinations so I can see what is available at a glance. I backorder the names I like and then I wait. I picked up some great one name domains and some keyword domains that are perfect for existing sites.

I also count my TIME as an investment..my time is MONEY..honestly, I'm probably the ONLY guy on GFY that make money for being myself..sitting and either writing, drawing or signing my name on one of my products ( it all takes time) but..the cost is $0 and can make profit

so my biggest investment would have to be.....being me

and here's some advice for any investors...you treat $1 like you would $1000

because that $1 is a seed that can grow into $1000...if you throw it away...you fucked up all the potential seeds

gleem 02-13-2011 09:02 AM

1000 shares of Apple at around $8.. Still have 500 of them left, was a pig and held it till $220, and I'm gonna sit on these for a while longer.

My previous partner bought 10,000 shares at the same time, but he sold it after it went up $1.50 a few months later... he could have been set lol.

irwin99 02-13-2011 09:03 AM

Sandridge Energy NYSE:SD

Bought in around $4, and have been adding all the way up. Expect this to hit $30+ within 2 years.

40x bagger, congrats.
IF i werent stupid and still had all stocks i bought during feb-march 09 bottom my portfolio would be over 1 milion dollars worth today. Of course i was stupid, sold most of my equities in the summer of 09 and lost a shirt while shorting the market. Sitting tight and doing nothing would be best thing. now some of those companies are 10-20x baggers as they were priced for a BK (incorrectly) during the bottom. such a fuck-up of once in a lifetime opportunity.
