Affiliate Fraud

Damnit! It is just me or does credit card fraud by affiliates seem to be on the upswing lately? This last pay cycle we had to terminate 17 affiliates for sending bogus signups. Cheating bastards!!! :feels-hot

Hmmmm... your processor failed to scrub them?

Pipecrew 01-18-2003 12:37 PM

sounds like an "easy" way to term affiliates and not pay them to me

NetRodent 01-18-2003 12:56 PM

We would love to pay them (and have them send more traffic) if it was worth something. You can't stay in business burning bridges.

Here's the info on from one of the affiliates and I'll let you guys make up your mind if they're cheating us or we just don't want to pay them.

Over a 2 week period, the affiliate in question sent an average of about 5K raw and 4K unique hits per day through the first part of our tracking script. This generated about 1 or 2 signups per day. Somedays were 0 and some days there were as many as 4. The only days that our covers were loaded were when there were signups and coincidentally there were the same number of hits as signups. The hits were sent from a wide variety of isps and countries, however alll of the signups came from AOL ip addresses. The info we track about the members (email address, name, etc.) was entered in caps for all of the signups. Aside from the first signup (in the previous pay period) none of these signups ever logged into the site they joined, and none of them contacted customer support. Also, four of the five signups that this affiliate generated in the previous pay period were either refunded or charged back.

We don't like posting specifics about our dirty laundry. As entertaining as threads like that are, they aren't right. As far as I know none of these people were regular posters here, they seem to be card-traders not webmasters.

psyko514 01-18-2003 01:05 PM

netrodent... i think he wants to know to check if they're abusing his affiliate program too.

Wait until you get the ones that admit to the fraud but ask if they can get paid anyway because they are very poor....

FreeNetPass Dave 01-18-2003 05:16 PM

NetRodent - shoot me an email - [email protected]

EscortBiz 01-18-2003 05:23 PM

why did you post if you dont want to give more details or ICQ for a second?

NetRodent 01-18-2003 06:00 PM

I posted mainly because I felt like bitching. Had I wanted yo "out" cheaters I would have included their particulars in my original post. While most of these cases were rather egregious, we would like to give the terminated affiliates a chance to respond. Most of the emails were just sent out on friday.

We've spent a fair amount of time talking internally about how to handle cheaters. On one hand we know that by shaing info about cheaters, we could reduce the amount of fraud that the industry experiences. However, at the same time we are hesitant to do so because the potential to falsely smear someone's reputation.

If we're wrong about any of these terminations (and I don't see any way we could be), they can be restored with no ill effects beyond a delayed check. If I release their particulars on the board, that damage cannot be undone.
