Anyone into vertical gardening?

What plants have you had success with, especially towards the top where they generally get the least amount of water?

had to click to find out what 'vertical gardening' is - never heard it before but makes sense.

grew up with a lot of Italians in the neighborhood, they all had grapevines on wooden trellises in their backyards.

I don't mean on a vine, I mean up a wall or a vertical fixture. Where you water from the top, it drips through them all.

Sort of like this... (not best example but gives you a basic idea of what I mean)

Check out "vertical garden" "green wall" and "living wall"

Some people are doing some cool things with hydroponic vertical gardens, with the water system powered by inexpensive solar panels.

Look into "Urban Gardening" and you'll find some neat ideas.

My garden is on the ground. I feel like a douche bag now.

I didn't even know you could do that in farmville...

soounds like a really cool thing to try. My mom keeps planting fruit trees and I swear in a year she will have run out of garden space, this may be a good idea for her, seriously. I'll read up on it and give it a try.

What I've seen done often is putting more natives (to your area) toward the top (the ones that can survive your local climate), and as you go down further putting things that handle or like more water. It's all a trial/error thing.

Chicago Botanic Garden has a ton of these -- the one in your pictures is from the CBG.

In chicago they plant a lot of Cedum and native/hardy stuff that would normally go on a "Green Roof" -- maybe check out plants for a "green roof" for ideas. You'll want stuff that stays more in a clump, or is a vine. Also stay away from anything considered an invasive species in your area...you'll have that shit growing all over your entire house in a few weeks!
