or if you just need a discreet solution
The Football is a compact watertight case and does not need to be opened in order to operate. Simply start it up with a key, and 60 seconds later, it becomes a wireless hotspot.

their prices aren't too bad either , for $100/day lease you get a fully loaded portable solution with a plan, enough to run a good sized network, you could run that shit on an iceberg

How much do they sell that thing for?

Bad ass.

Surprised Wikileaks isn't doing something like that and just going nuts with releases.

Won't work.. All they have to do is shut down the satellite and you will not have any connection. I have seen it done when I was in iraq & Afghanistan as well as other places around the world..

?? how are they going to shut down a satellite they don't own and have no control over ?

if america shuts down the internet the whole thing fails , having a connection anywhere wont help, any other country couldn't stop you with this

Then connect to a different satellite.. "they" don't own them all. As long as you have line of sight, you can pay someone for an Internet connection.

TheDoc 01-30-2011 11:29 AM

Wifi's could create an intranet of sorts, and those with outside connections could cache first time connections to sites - like old dialup did, rebuilding a cached version of the Internet.

Major cities with the population close together could easily create localized versions of the Internet.

Not always true. Just because you have "line of site" does not mean you will have access to the satellite. I have a satellite phone that I use when out of the USA, I don't always have communication just because I have line of site. Depends where I am. If the host country does not want you to have a connection then you don't get one. Now on the other side of the coin, I use a secure satellite setup when I do contract work to have 24/7 communication back to the USA but the average person would not have access to that kind of equipment. :2 cents:

the host country of the satellite not the country you are in, i.e. when your government shuts down the internet you connect to a country that isn't shutdown.

It really doesn't help much having a super cool football that turns into a Wifi hotspot if all major hosting centers is shut down and major bandwidth pipes seized.

this is highly unlikely seeing as how much commerce uses the internet these days. Major hosting centers and bandwidth pipes = usa. Usa wouldn't shutdown the net and hurt their own commerce ,it would cause a huge stock crash.

It can be blocked at will and is blocked in many countries around the world, both the up-link & down-link. There are only so many satellites floating around in space. Not many countries have satellites and the ones that do can control them with a keystroke at any time.

Yes you can receive satellite communication provided it is not blocked but it is ALL in the up link that counts and that's what is blocked most of the time.
