I don't know how they become so popular on an international level either. Their lyrics are so specific to the situation in South Africa. But they are brilliant if you understand what they are singing about. Google Max Normal on youtube if you want to listen to the music they released before Die Antwoord. They've been producing hip-hop for years and are very talented.
