How should I respond to this?

I received this email...This hosting company completely destroyed nearly 10 years of gallery work. Over 30,000 gallerys online. 3000+ original templates. Thousands of hours of video editing work with a loss of over 200,000 uniques daily(nearly 50,000 of that quality targeted SE traffic). And the two guys that were taking care of it for me are both out of a job now.

After numerous requests for my data they never have responded until now.

How should I respond to their survey?

Minte, did they ever get your data back to you or just the dumbass questionnaire? Everyone really should perform their own local backups. I am guilty of not doing this frequently enough myself.

HomerSimpson 01-27-2011 07:12 PM

ouch.....

(my friend also had similar situation where staff fucked both raid drive and fucked bandwidth, him loosing about 500GB of data on very big non adults site... they offered him $100 compensation LOL)

The way I read it Mente had to let them go because his works that the two were maintaining was lost by the host and not recovered.

BV 01-27-2011 08:41 PM

Didn't you get hacked or something a while back?

JOH 01-27-2011 08:42 PM

Any reason for this occurrence?

Sorry to hear this. I would talk to a lawyer.

And start backing up everything 3 times. Were you running a back up of the server like RAID?

If you can prove they were negligent then reply via an attorney. But if you have no backups what so ever something tells me you wont get far with it.

Coup 01-28-2011 06:50 AM

reply with a picture of goatse. just goatse nothing else

spazlabz 01-28-2011 06:58 AM

man that just... sucks. Considering what you lost the only real satisfaction you could ever get would be monetary and while I am no lawyer I dont think that is very likely. Just take it as a messed up lesson and move on... don't forget to let everyone know what happened and which company it was

Machete_ 01-28-2011 07:06 AM

backups should be kept at all times

A backup is usually run at an interval like daily and all data is copied to a separate drive. There are different types of RAID. Stripes, mirrors and combinations of the two. Stripes are generally for performance, faster access. Mirrors are identical live copies. You need at least two drives to have any type of RAID array.

I was told that there are bits and pieces but a lot of big gaps. Over the years there have been 5 different guys I have hired to keep it organized.

I remember in the days of Windows3.0 having to put together files recovered from a scandisk to get my work back. It was a PITA, but worth the effort.

You might want to gather those bits and pieces and see what is there. Also sounds like a data recovery service might be worth the money if it is just a drive that died.
