Google cracks down on BLOG FARMS

Full discussion at Source: http://www.highrevenue.com/seo/googl...-content-farms

we recently launched a redesigned document-level classifier that makes it harder for spammy on-page content to rank highly. The new classifier is better at detecting spam on individual web pages, e.g., repeated spammy words?the sort of phrases you tend to see in junky, automated, self-promoting blog comments.

Interesting, I wonder how it works in practice, what mechanisms it's using.

Let's hope it's not the usual approach of using a steamroller to kill ants

"We take pride in Google search and strive to make each and every search perfect."

LOL. That's why the quality of their results has gone downhill the last couple of months?... Google likes to think it's smarter than you and includes unrelated words it thinks are synonyms...

Their algorithm is still the most intuitive out of any other search engine by a huge margin, which is why they're the most widely used engine on the internet. Obviously, that makes them a huge target by spammers. The only way for them to fight back is to use a less than perfect system.

This is a good thing because blog farms fuck with real organic search results - especially to those of us who actually work on our blogs rather than turn wordpress into a TGP CMS...

:D

V_RocKs 01-22-2011 06:35 PM

Maybe the algo can bitch slap the image farms too...

CaptainHowdy 01-22-2011 08:18 PM

Miguel T 01-22-2011 08:37 PM

Those are great news indeed, hopefuly my network of blogs will get the spots they deserv! :D

moeloubani 01-22-2011 09:26 PM

What is considered a blog farm? I have lots of blogs that I throw posts on and forget, but they just push a sponsor and all the text is unique and relevant. Would that be considered a part of a farm?

SmokeyTheBear 01-22-2011 09:31 PM

google is saying they copied all of fatfoo's comments to use as a "useless" comment litmus test :)

AzteK 01-22-2011 09:34 PM

"The new classifier is better at detecting spam on individual web pages, e.g., repeated spammy words"

This could affect even handwritten blogs.. but if this is true the fix is easy, keep doing what you do just chill on the repetitive keywords.

edgeprod 01-22-2011 11:16 PM

Did Google detect that the article was spam for Webmaster Labor? hehe, just ribbin' ya, Gene ... Good analysis and good promo link at the bottom.

Death to those with limited vocabulary then.

This follows on the heels of Cutts' announcement re Q1 crackdown on cloaking.

izzynew 01-23-2011 08:52 PM

The great Matt Cutts has spoken and sycophants all over the web are posting the information as the absolute truth.

Ideally no.
Unless they all contain the same content or spun content, have less than relevant keywords scattered all over them, and all link in some way to your money site.

But as stated earlier, google is not perfect, so we could all get caught by accident in their rush to remain 'the best search engine in the world'.

chaze 01-23-2011 09:50 PM

I always say it's not about how many times you have the keywords it's having the right amount in the right place the right time.

RyuLion 01-23-2011 10:00 PM

This is good news indeed!

Shoplifter 01-23-2011 10:05 PM

And this is why I reject so many trades at Linkspun... These splogs are worthless.

Agreed.

I'll even take it a step or two further and say that I hope Google becomes more proactive in making adjustments that will bring pain to all the lazy fucks who would seemingly rather troll on GFY or play on ICQ instead of actually putting together quality sites. I'm not trying to sound like a dick or anything, but that's just my humble opinion.

TechCrunch guru, Vivek Wadhwa, bitched about this three weeks ago: http://techcrunch.com/2011/01/01/why...tter-google-2/.

Isn't "blog" just a synonym for "spam" nowadays?

the problem is that the "solution" they are trying to come up with is even worse, like a reincarnation of dmoz

While the volume of splogs is huge, webmasters who run real blogs (using custom/original content and fostering actual blog conversations/communities or tracking niche news and offering analysis/commentary or using FHG-based original stories) should be safe from this. Big G is just gunning for the "low hanging fruit".

Assuming G's past algos, expect the first few updates to be clunky.

Anyone who relies on Adsense as their main source of income is doing it wrong. Unless you have MAJOR clean traffic (providing a service or original quality content) you're putting yourself at risk. They can cut you off at any point without rhyme or reason.
