What are some essential metal songs?

I'm trying to build a playlist for metal

I have some metallica, sepultura, slayer, testament, avenge 7, creed, korn.

Anything thoughts on this?

Those aren't "essential" (awful choice of word) metal bands.

Give Mother England some loving...

get creed out of there for sure...

essential?
Venom, early Megadeth, Dio

what subgenres? death metal, grindcore, hair metal?

so many different subgeneres

Lately, I've been digging folk metal (bastard hybrid of heavy metal and folk music)

reformednanpa 01-19-2011 04:30 PM

slayer - dead skin mask

i have had even totally non-metal friends get addicted to the hypnotic sounds in it .. awesome

fatfoo 01-19-2011 04:31 PM

You could also listen to Judas Priest and Black Sabbath.

reformednanpa 01-19-2011 04:33 PM

oh yeah: Judas Priest - One Shot At Glory

Definitely in the top 10 of all metal songs ever to exist on earth, metal as in the religion

Zayne E. 01-19-2011 04:35 PM

Chimaira
Lamb of God
Trivium
Behemoth
As I Lay Dying
Dimmu Borgir
Megadeth
Metal Church
Slipknot

man I love Creed but I know everyone hates them. lol No sub gens just metal or maybe heavy metal.

Megadeath for sure they are added.

And essential is a lame name for this, your right. Maybe epic songs like I would say peace sells and Symphony of Destruction. Added both. Never liked Venom but respect for sure. Dio is a little old for me but used to love them. Maybe mid 80's and up.

:thumbsup

Venom fucking owns. Can't go wrong with a little Judas Priest in the mix.

What you've listed seems like you're into thrash. Get some Suicidal Tendencies, Dayglo Abortions (Here Today, Guano Tomorrow would be a good album for you). Annihilator, Anvil, Kreator, Meshuggah, Acid Drinkers, Cryptic Slaughter, Atrophy, Nuclear Assault, Municipal Waste.

Definitely get all the Gwar you can take. Ummm, Vio-lence, Verbal Abuse, S.O.D.

I dunno, start with that...

I actually know almost all of those and I had sex for the first time back stage at a Gwar show.

Your going a little too far back, even though those bands are awesome I like how amps and drums have advanced in the 80's and prefer that sound. Too bad, I wish they had that equipment available in the 70's I would be all over it. And the 80's ones where kind of cheap on the equipment too, I saw most of those bands in concert and there equipment was good but I prefer the high end sound for metal.

Suicidal is in there now.

Read your follow up, Pantera! how can I miss them. Added.

Give Children of Bodom a shot if you're looking for something more modern.

From what I can find, Dexter from the Offspring had that shirt made specifically for him and his friends. Conflicting messages on the Offspring message board indicate somewhere between 20-50 made. I've seen claims that someone was selling theirs on ebay awhile back, fetching $500+.

The only one I can actually find for sale is this piece of shit:

Cafepress is a breeze to make shit to sell. Perhaps someone here can get creative and make a shirt. :thumbsup

Riffhard 01-19-2011 05:31 PM

Don't forget Motorhead!

Quagmire 01-19-2011 05:39 PM

A ton of stuff by Anthrax and Napalm Death come to mind. And of course Motörhead, specifically Ace of Spades is high on the list for me.

LeRoy 01-19-2011 05:39 PM

Ronnie James Dio
Danzig
AC/DC

bronco67 01-19-2011 06:54 PM

Hot Topics just left me a voicemail insisting I post in this thread to remind you that you left your credit card in their store. And they miss you to please come back.

BLACK FUCKING SABBATH is the only thing that will cure you.

CaptainHowdy 01-20-2011 05:55 PM

Slipknot is a relentless piece of garbage...

Damn, I need that for drinks tonight. Guess I will have to drink whiskey before I go out.

Fuseblown 01-21-2011 12:49 AM

Opeth.. Reverie/Harlequin Forest, Ghost of Perdition, The Funeral Portrait are my favorites of theirs. They sound as amazing live as they do recorded, maybe even better.

I agree on Black Sabbath, although over-time, I've grown more fond of Sabbath with Dio than Ozzy. Paranoid is still the best album, overall, though.

RycEric 01-21-2011 01:23 AM

Fabien 01-21-2011 02:11 AM

Old Ozzy
Dio
Black Sabbath (Dio days)
Judas Priest (Srceaming for vengance album)
Van Halen (First 4 albums)
and of course Iron Maiden
Those would make my list.

But i've found this. Hope it helps.
