random question for americans...
do you have a circulating $1 coin now?
|
I have some in my coin jar, but i think they were only minted in 2000. Could have just hit me on the Q mang.
I did work for a strip club and some strippers at the time and there were many good jokes about inserting the dollar coins. |

My wife started getting them and giving them as good luck gifts on New Years...never understood exactly why, but I have a few rattling around.
|
I was just at the grocery store today and the girls at the til had one and were talking about it all mind blown. I didn't take a look at it, but I'd never heard of one either. I was curious afterwards.
Found them on Wikipedia with a little searching. Apparently they've been minting them since 2000, not just the one run. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacagawea_dollar |

Yes there are several dollar coins, the big silver dollars and the small gold ones. Never seen one in a strip club though I don't think the girls would like it, although I doubt they would turn down money.

Yes, there is more than one kind circulating. I typically only see them at the bank when I ask for them or if at some novelty type of place that thinks it's cool to hand out Susan B Anthony's or the other one.
:2 cents: |
Yep. I have them saved with some other coins.
|
Not all Americans even know we have them. A couple of months ago I was leaving a paid parking garage and the lady in front of me was at the little auto-pay station and she's taking forever. I'm beginning to get pissed. People behind me are starting some honking. Suddenly she puts her car in reverse and signals to me that I have to back up so she can get out. I'm assuming that she doesn't have the money to pay so I get out and walk up to her car thinking I'll just pay it for her as that'll be more convenient than having to have everyone back up. I walk up to her car and she tells me that something's wrong with this damn machine, it only gave her "tokens." UGH!!!, Those are Sacajawea dollars lady. OOooooohhhhhhh, so sorry. And away we went.

Personally I find singles more convenient, but it's not like I use cash enough to really bitch. We're becoming increasingly a more plastic world. Swipe and go. |
When I used to be a grocery store checker I had a hard time giving out Susan B Anthony's dollar coins... People would tell me they didn't want Canadian money or Mexican pesos.
|
slot machines would be a bore without those big silver dollars

I have a handful of the Sacajawea dollars, that I believe I got at a toll booth on the way home from Sly's a few years ago.

Oops - realized the commercials I used to see WERE in fact for the Sacagawea dollar coins...I thought they were for the presidential dollar coins.

On a related topic, do many patrons come in with bags of coins? Seems like a hassle compared to bills, which are light, easy to carry. Ron |
American dollar coins have been minted intermittently since 1794, currently there are three dollar coin series in production: The Presidential $1 Coin Series (begun in 2007), the Sacagawea Golden Dollar (first issued in 2000), and the Native American $1 Coins(first issued in 2009).
All three dollar coins are golden in color, created by a mixture of metals (none of them gold). These dollar coins have the same "electromagnetic signature" as their predecessor, the Susan B. Anthony (SBA) dollar, which was silver in color. Keeping this signature allows older vending machines to accept the new coins without being retrofitted. http://www.usmint.gov/images/mint_pr...BannerPres.jpg http://www.usmint.gov/images/mint_pr...icanBanner.jpg |
