For the $1 billion they spent to cover a 53 mile portion of the AZ/ Mexico border they good have built a real fence that stretched a lot further. :disgust

Here's what I don't fucking understand.... Why doesn't the military patrol our fucking borders?

We have millions of men and women under arms, and society has crept up to our military bases. Start moving them out to the land between the US and Mexico and establish military bases there. Gives them lots of room for "live fire training".

Compared to a border patrol agent who makes $60k a year and has a house payment, plus spends most of his time out in the field away from his family?

Oh, I'm sure it's already an issue. And always will be. Look at what's happened in Mexico with all of the corruption.

They do to some extent, the National Guard currently has troops in various locales along the border...mostly remote areas. They conduct surveillance missions mostly, acting as additional eyes for the Border Patrol who they then call in to make the actual apprehension of the illegals.
The reason you don't have regular Army, Marines, etc. is that they cannot be used for civilian law enforcement due to the Posse Comitatus Act.

You are absolutely correct...they wasted that money.
Where they have built the fence, crime has gone down as well as illegal crossings.
We have a long section of the fence that transverses the majority of El Paso County and Southern New Mexico, it has made a huge difference, especially for the residents that live very close to the border.
