NEW YORK ? Verizon Wireless would seem to be a big winner after its expected announcement Tuesday that it will start selling the iPhone and break Apple Inc.'s monogamous relationship with AT&T Inc. in the U.S.

But for several reasons, the iPhone's arrival to Verizon would be poorly timed, and Verizon's gains won't be as clearcut.

There's no doubt a Verizon iPhone would attract millions of buyers, and it would give the country's largest wireless carrier a chance to catch up with AT&T in attracting high-paying smart-phone customers.

Since the iPhone's debut in 2007, AT&T has been its exclusive distributor in the U.S. Many people held back because they already had service with a carrier they liked or were apprehensive about congestion on AT&T's network, particularly in New York and San Francisco.

Rumors about a Verizon iPhone have swirled for years and have risen in recent months. The Wall Street Journal has reported that an event Verizon is holding Tuesday is to announce a deal with Apple to start selling iPhones at the end of the month.

Even if I have to pay a $1 Billion termination fee from AT&T, I'm moving to Verizon. God, AT&T has the worst fucking coverage and service in the history of cell phone providers.

It's big news for Apple and Verizon, but at this point with all the hot new Android devices set to be available in the next few months...anyone jumping on this iPhone is actually going to be losing out. The iPhone doesn't hold it's own against the currently available Android phones, it's really gonna be hurting when new ones come out shortly.

It's already been announced...... now, what to choose. iPhone or Android. I've been leaning torward Android only because it's the only option, but now.. what to do.

- Select whatever carrier & plan you want

There's places that cut the SIM to the perfect size. For example I have t-mobile service for my iPhone in the states. No contract.

Word to that, I use a prepaid SIM in mine :thumbsup Has perfect 3G and data service as well for pretty cheap.

While I am sure some people will jump ship remember this:

1. you can't surf and talk on Verizon
2. the iphone on Verizon will be 3G not 4G (AT&T is rumored to get 4G this summer while Verizon, if on the same schedule as AT&T, will not get a 4G iPhone until Feb 2012!)

And in the interest of timing Apple made its official announcement at 11:11 am on 11/11/11.

Agreed this should have been done years ago. AT&Ts service is overpriced crap, dropped calls and very poor connection quality. Service is spotty in San Diego and nonexistent in upstate NY, New Hampshire and Maine.:error

Congratulations, Verizon, with the iPhone success.

People would have been doing that for the past four years if it was that easy. Verizon is a CDMA network, not GSM...so it's not as easy as buying an unlocked phone and putting the SIM in. CDMA doesn't work that way.

can tell you that even though verizon contains the old bell atlantic nynex territories, coverage is spotty in upstate new york also, non existent in lots of areas. I have had every major carrier for years and at one time they just all suck. sprint sucked, att sucked, verizon, lame ass service, fuckin t-mobile i was so glad to be out of contract with those assholes. I don't know what i did before i had a cell phone, but they suck, every fucking one of them.

Then again, to think what you can accomplish on a little handheld device, it's pretty cool, i just wish call quality was better on any of them.

Verizon 3G is actually better than at&t's. Not to mention it's in more areas. Zero point in having a 3G phone form at&t in my area since at&t doesn't have 3g service. However Verizon does and we'll have 4g from verizon before at&t gets 3G here. So at&t can go fuck itself.

Exact opposite here. Verizon is crappy but AT&T reception is good. All depends where you live.

I live in a town of 800 people and on Verizon I have 3G! Everywhere I've been with my phone I've always had great signal and I get a lot more 3G areas than and other network I know of.. I've had t-mobile and I know a lot of friends with the AT&T iphone and I always ask them if they get 3G in places I do and they laugh and say no..

I'm sticking with my Moto Droid for at least 3 mos than I'll see if I want to get the iphone cause while I love my ipad I'm not a apple fan boy and my android phone does everything i need a smart phone to do.

I love my keyboard on my droid but this looks promising for the iphone 4 but it's still too new to know if it's good

I gotta decide what to do. I'd like to upgrade from my current BB Tour and the wife's BB Storm 2. Not sure if I want to grab the iphone or wait until june and get the newer version hopefully. Or maybe the droid bionic when it is released.
