Beer Connoisseurs: Ever try Dogfish Head?

This is Dogfish Head 90 Minute Imperial IPA. This is perhaps the best beer I've ever had. Found it in a bar in Manhattan the other day, so I went out and grabbed it at BevMo when I got back home. It's $11 for a 4 pack. LOL

But... it's 9% ABV. Packs a punch.

very good stuff..I prefer the 60 min IPA, the pumpkin beer is also pretty damn good.

Deej 01-06-2011 09:15 PM

I do believe Ive tried it once...

leg4 01-06-2011 09:41 PM

Tried it a few times here...the brand.... Didn't like it much.

Did you move GhettoThugs to NYC?

DateDoc 01-06-2011 10:10 PM

DFH makes some pretty weird brews but most of them are good. The 90 min is very good. 60 min is good too. 120 Min needs to be aged like wine but it can be incredible given a few years. Their Punkin Ale is one of the best pumpkin ales I have had. Love their World Wide Stout too. Forte - raspberry sour ale - I didn't care for too much and Chicha I just can't bring myself to try.

I've tried most of what they make and Sam Calagione is a genius when it comes to taking beer to another level. If you want a business book to read try his book Brewing up a business. At times he rambles on but there is good insight in the book. And then there is the new show on Discover, Brew Masters which is all him.

As their tag line says, "Off centered beer for off centered people."

Great beer, don't forget to try Stone Brewery's Ruination IPA or Arrogant Bastard. Also recommend Dreadnaught IPA

Spunky 01-06-2011 10:20 PM

I must partake of the dogfish.hope it's available up here somewhere

Ruination is top notch!

Definitely a good IPA, I prefer Odell's.

Don't drink many IPAs huh? Never had one that wasn't in the 9% range. :winkwink:

Craft beers are sure pushing the ABV up there. On the extremes you have Brewdog in Scotland that made the 32% ABV (64 proof) Tactical Nuclear Penguin.
http://www.brewdog.com/tactical_nuclear_penguin

PS. if you like IPAs try the Scuttlebutt Gale Force IPA - only 5.25% ABV but has all the flavor and bitterness (96 IBU) you want.

DateDoc 01-06-2011 11:08 PM

Brewdog has a new IPA too - Sink the Bismarck, 41% ABV (82 proof)!

Supz 01-06-2011 11:11 PM

Where in manhattan did you find it?

D Ghost 01-06-2011 11:13 PM

Holy fuck. I think that would put me in a coma. I'm already pretty far off after 2 Dogfish Head and 2 Pyramid Apricot Ale's...

buzzard 01-07-2011 12:15 AM

If you drink that kind of beer, you're not a true drinker. You're a wannabe.

deej... you look great! But stay off the darky dunk! :ticking

Pumpkin beer??? really? how its taste?

UniqueD 01-07-2011 03:25 AM

Dogfish Head is great stuff. Its a little more on the pricey side but it only takes a couple bottles to knock you on your ass. I'm surprised some of you east coast people are just finding out about it, or haven't heard of it since it's brewed in Delaware.
If you get a chance check out this Squall IPA.

BittieBucks Eric 01-07-2011 06:11 AM

I've tried the Saison du Buff which was done by DFh, Victory and Stone. All 3 breweries made the same beer with the same recipe. The results obviously differ.

The Saison du Buff has parsely, sage, rosemary and thyme in it and it tastes great. It's got quite a strong hop flavour which means the herbs don't overpower the beer.

I'd love to get my hands on some DFH beers but her in the Netherlands it's simply not available :(

BittieBucks Eric 01-07-2011 06:12 AM

Oh, people should watch the "Brew Masters" show.

IllTestYourGirls 01-07-2011 06:33 AM

Doesnt that company have a show on history channel or something like that?

pristine 01-07-2011 06:55 AM

IPA's suck.

not too bad a price to be honest.

Tom_PM 01-07-2011 08:18 AM

Never tried it, but I've brewed my own and know the appeal of experimentation. I enjoy the brewing information parts of the tv show. The employees each get a case of beer with every paycheck. Good trend!

BittieBucks Eric 01-07-2011 08:50 AM

I've brewed twice myself, I love it. Right now we(me and 2 friends) have a really really nice beer. Hope to expand on it :)

This thread made me crave a beer.

kbauerctu 01-07-2011 12:08 PM

If we are talking IPA's one of my favorite beers ever comes from a little known brewery http://www.russianriverbrewing.com. It is called Pliny the Elder Double IPA 8%

There stuff is impossible to find in stores. KNL and Whole Foods carry it, but as soon as it arrives, it sells out.

It's amazing. If you can get your hands on it, do so!

LauraLee 01-07-2011 12:17 PM

I've got a few of those in my fridge. For friends.

I'll pick myself up some of that next time I'm at Whole Foods.

My girlfriend was fucking making me do math last night after having 4 beers. Pretty messed up.

It's really hard to find. If there out, ask one of the beer people when more will arrive.

webairalex 01-07-2011 03:05 PM

Dogfish Head Raison D'Etre is also amazing!

from their site!

A deep, mahogany Belgian-style brown ale brewed with beet sugar, raisins, and Belgian-style yeast.

We began brewing this one at our brewpub in 1996 (we began packaging and selling it sometime in 1998) as the answer to the question, "What beer should I enjoy with a wood-grilled steak?" Raison D'Etre fits the bill, tasty and as complex as a fine, red wine.

loreen 01-07-2011 05:24 PM

Funny name for a beer, eh?

It's nice because it's not too overpowering pumpkin taste, there are spices like cinnamon and some clove thrown in, gives it a nice balance.

I also really recommend Young's double chocolate stout, I had some over the Xmas break again. Super good stuff. Creamy, chocolatey, smooth goodness. A+ in my book.
