Mac Book Pro Versu Mac Air

Just need your feedback on which laptop you prefer
and why? I already made my purchase but I am curious of
everybody's :2 cents::2 cents:
Mac Air via Pro. Thanks !!

Really depend on your needs.

I have a MBP17" with SSD drive, it's so fast. I need the dvd player, the MBA does not have it....

CYF 12-30-2010 01:51 PM

macbook pro is a better value. Get a netbook if you need portability.

potter 12-30-2010 01:56 PM

There's no reason to get a macbook pro right now, as the macbook pro is at the very end of this line. If you look in comparison, the recently updated macbooks have the same specs as the pro but about a $500 price difference.

The macbook pro line is supposed to be updated early 2011, and will hopefully have a quad code processor. Anyone buying a macbook pro right now is almost throwing their money away.

That being said, the air is a really really nice laptop. If you don't need a CD drive (and there's not much reason for one these days) it's a great option. If I was going in today to buy an Apple laptop I'd go with the air.

alexchechs 12-30-2010 02:17 PM

I like the pro much better because I always need to either hook up a firewire drive or to burn soem dvds...etc.

quiet 12-30-2010 02:20 PM

i got the air around 6 months ago, and love it. super light, and really well built.

webair 12-30-2010 02:53 PM

Pro is much better, faster, etc. Just heavier

myneid 12-30-2010 03:04 PM

if you do memory adn cpu intensive thigns all teh time like video editing, or maybe even photoshop (becasue adobe doesnt know how to slim down their products) the macbook pro is the way to go.
if you dont do any of that and you are ok with a small laptop screen, the air is soooo awesome.

bigmacandcheese 12-30-2010 03:10 PM

It totally depends on what you use it for.

I love the Macbook air for travel, but for video work and Image work (when I need to be mobile) it has to be the Macbook pro.

If I'm working at home, it's my Mac Pro with Dual monitors - the screen real estate makes working much faster and easier.

For most people thought the air is great, you just don't need to features of the more powerful systems for email & web browsing.

webgurl 12-30-2010 03:15 PM

It took me 2hrs to decide in the store LOL i decided with PRO ...
Tell me i made the right decision? The Air - cosmetic wise was nice, oh
and you cant beat the weight which is amazing. However the specs on the
air was kinda shitty 2GB , 256gb versus Pro which was also 200 bux less (both same sizes 13'')
4GB / 320GB. In all reality, the Pro is not that much heavier in comparison
to regular PC laptops its fine (and i am a small person) . I made my decision
from watching several youtube video comparisons LOL ...

webgurl 12-30-2010 03:25 PM

and dammmmmmmmmmmn might I add, I can't believe i didn't go Mac
10 yrs ago wtf was i thinking . LOL this machine is HOT . Sheeeeeeeeit

DamianJ 12-30-2010 03:32 PM

Totally depends on your use case. If you don't need to edit HD video, or use PS extensively, then I would go for the air.

If you need any grunt at all, it's not even worth considering the air.

Amputate Your Head 12-30-2010 04:37 PM

Pro.

i run a studio here. i have needs. :2 cents:

Raja 12-30-2010 06:52 PM

If you can wait till April you'll get much more for you $$$.

When to buy a Mac

pamon 12-30-2010 07:15 PM

have the 11" air and love it. don't edit videos or content so don't need the power of a Pro. Air is super light and easy to fit in a binder portfolio. have the 2GB/64GB model and it works great.

DateDoc 12-30-2010 07:24 PM

I'm getting the smaller MacBook Air. Portability is the key for me.

2MuchMark 12-30-2010 09:05 PM

Macbook Pro is faster but heavier.

Macbook air is slower but lighter (and much smaller).

If all you travel alot and need to surf the web, write emails and play with programs like iMovie, the Macbook air is for you. But if you need more speed and care less about size and speed, get the macbook pro.

KillerK 12-31-2010 01:27 AM

I bought the Air, and it plays World Of Warcraft fine. It also seems plenty fast.

However if I was planning to edit lots of video, I probably wouldn't do it on a laptop anyway.

Battery life isn't super long with you use wifi and play WoW on it.

Django 12-31-2010 02:00 AM

Pro for sure

pamon 12-31-2010 02:25 AM

for most stuff with the air, the SSD makes a HUGE difference. that's the big upgrade on it plus virtually no weight. wouldn't want to do any HD editing or final cut pro on it though.

blazin 12-31-2010 02:42 AM

I went with a 13" Pro also... bought it just a few days ago. Must admit it was a difficult choice especially as I knew that they being upgraded in the next few months. Unfortunately I need a laptop now as I am travelling for a few months.

potter 12-31-2010 05:04 PM

All you posters who said you recently purchased macbook pros. Can you explain to me why you went with the mackbook pro over the regular macbook. What specifically did the macbook pro have that the macbook didn't which you needed?

The aluminum case looks so much better :)

quiet 01-01-2011 01:56 AM

i actually own both. the pro is older, and much more powerful, but i love the air for travel, email, browsing, etc. hard to believe how light and yet strong it is.

i have a pro. air is too much of a toy, too expensive for me, tho i have bought ipad, but that obe is being enjoyed by all the family.

AdultB2B 01-03-2011 03:25 AM

I have the 15" MBP. Great machine. But quite honestly I could have gotten by ok by keeping my good old white macbook. There isn't that much difference. But this one does look cooler :)

People who think there is no difference between the macbook and the macbook pro do not use their computers for anything more than a little old lady would.

Actually before they added the i7 proc, they were exactly the same computer. Minus the slightly better HD and graphics card - and I mean "slightly". If you upgrade the MBP to the i7 proc then you'll definitely have more "grunt" as you put it. Other than that though, I'd put money down no one would be able to tell the difference between the other hardware options. Couple more months when they are updated and the MBPs will be killer.

I know what I'm talking about :2 cents:

You clearly don't.

But that's cool. You think they are the same if you like.

They have the i5 or i7 proc over the macbook. In the history of Apple, the main difference between the macbook and macbook pro has been options. The MBPs have always had the option to upgrade a lot farther than the regular MB. However, with the last line update on the MB, it put it on par with the MBP (in fact at the time the MB and MBP were almost identical). Until 5 months later then the MBP line got the i5 and i7 processors. This then again put the MBP a step above the MB, but not by much and certainly not by what you're making it out to be. The MBP line will get it's real push in a few months with the new line.
