It is running WPMU, which yes .. It is free however install the custom WPMU and see how it looks - see how operational it is .... spend the week + at your computer learning the system I did :)

I have a membership to a site that costs $400 a year I need to pay in full for - in order to do that I am going to run 5 installs of WPMU with the plugins and 135 + themes for your users to select from (installed and operational), as well as some other custom features .. For Only $69

If you want added customization that is possible as well but will cost additional fees. Create a sample blog yourself at Weblogs.In and see if the user interface would suit you. You would have a front page similar to weblogs.in as well .. Very basic layout but users would know where to sign up / log-in / etc ...

P.S. This does include 100 + themes for your users to choose from, added functionality for pinging your users blogs which is not standard in a wpmu blog .. Just take a look at weblogs.in to get a feel for what you would get, everything running on weblogs.in sublogs created you would get :)

so you set up wordpress 3.+ and activate multi-site mode for 69 bucks?

Add 100 user templates, make sure everything is in place, a templated front end rather than the default WPMU format which doesn't even have a template for your front end that shows users where to sign up ..

Little more to it than you make it out to be as simple as plug n play, go ahead and install wpmu in 5 minutes including subdomains and a front end where users can sign up... It isn't that easy - you can manually add users with the new wp and approve them one at a time, but to get a site exactly like weblogs.in where the user gets user.domain.xxx / user.domain.xx instantly active with 100 + templates is a tedious task.

first thing, you have to find out which templates work with wpmu, then gather them, then upload them ... Then figure out which plug ins work and which don't .. not all wp 3.xx plugins work if you are using wpmu ..

The list goes on - but by all means, install it yourself :) If you get frustrated drop me a line though ..
