Gunman on motorcycle robs Bellagio Casino of $1.5 million in chips

Well, you don't see this everyday do ya?

Gunman on motorcycle robs Bellagio Casino of $1.5 million in chips

Las Vegas police say a gunman robbed the posh Bellagio hotel-casino early today of more than $1.5 million in chips then fled on a motorcycle, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.

According to the newspaper, police say the man wore a full-face motorcycle helmet and leather jacket when he walked into the pit area around 3:50 a.m. and demanded the chips.

"It was a very quick, in-and-out type of job," said Lt. Mark Reddon, the newspaper reports.

Developing story.

Dumb move I assume??

CurrentlySober 12-14-2010 01:03 PM

i like chips

PR_Glen 12-14-2010 01:03 PM

don't they only take those chips at the same casino? any plan that involves you having to go back to the same location to collect the money after the crime is a bad idea... you going to go in there with a few thousand at a time? sell them black market?

Jon Oso 12-14-2010 01:06 PM

They'll swap the chips out for new ones... leaving him with $1,500,000 in worthless chips and the police looking for him.

Full face helmet. Unless he had his name on it, does not sound too dumb.

Normally no, but I have a feeling Bellagio chips will not be accepted elsewhere for a while.

You're going to tell me that all 1700 of the other licensed Casinos in Las Vegas are going to turn away customers with Bellagio chips and tell them to leave? :error

That's what I was thinking. He may be able to cash in some, but I imagine they would switch to new chips asap and make people they don't know well who try to cash in large amounts go through a bunch of background checks and shit before they get their money.

Kenny B! 12-14-2010 02:10 PM

That's pretty damn ballsy, let's hope he's smarter than to try and sell them on craigslist or something like that

InfinityOscar 12-14-2010 02:16 PM

Terry Benedict is going to go after you, your family, your business, your friends ... :D

JFK 12-14-2010 02:17 PM

all the casinos have the cameras, face recognition systems even ? So if they pay attention who's trying to cash in the chips on a regular basis the fucker will be caught:2 cents:

DirtyDanza 12-14-2010 02:32 PM

as a life long local I can tell you exactly a few situations of what will happen....

as for how many chips casino's have...

by law they have to have cash on hand to cover any bet.. so that would be including all chips on casino floor at any time..

1.5 mil in chips depending on what he hit.. could have even been pumpkins 50k chips.. not that many chips...

he can easily cash them in no problem....

here's what will happen..

they will replace all beligaio chips on the floor with new design chips or it was just say the 1k and 5k chips they will replace those...

2.. any time you cash out chips over a grand they call the floor of the table you were playing at to confirm... or you give the chips to a hooker and let her cash them...

3 which is most probabale IMO after living here my whole life and knowing shit that's gone on...

if they don't change the chips.. or maybe even today he's there now buying in on baccarat with chips.. (they don't question) then leaving even from the table and cashing in... then the little phonecall from the cage over to the floor is on the up and up.....

stephane76 12-14-2010 02:41 PM

.

they are still gonna go after the thief to make an example out of him

djroof 12-14-2010 02:44 PM

where is Clooney?

woj 12-14-2010 02:48 PM

do those chips have serial #s on them? If they do, then it's likely the casino more or less knows what serial #s were stolen...

CunningStunt 12-14-2010 02:51 PM

I'm going to give them out to homeless people, $1000 a time. It's my good deed for 2010.

SmokeyTheBear 12-14-2010 02:55 PM

while i'm sure they will keep an eye out , they aren't going to swap out chips ( costly ) or start hassling people who cash in chips, both hurt their image.

dude will cash a few in , comeback buy chips place big safe bets slowly slipping in his chips, he is probably a gambler with an addiction.

jimmy-3-way 12-14-2010 03:02 PM

They will catch this fool in no time flat.

They have an infinite budget, dozens of cops on payroll and every incentive to make an example out of him. I guarantee you that they already have the make of the bike and helmet and are knocking on every door of every registered owner in Nevada to eliminate suspects and are tracking helmet sales going back a year.

Man, you and I have had some memorable nights in casinos... Miss you, lets meet up when I'm there in the next couple of weeks.

Rochard 12-14-2010 07:22 PM

They'll catch him the moment he cashes in the chips. Oh, he can do $25 here and there, but that would take forever to cash out. In order to get his money he'd have to do it in high amounts. The moments he goes to cash a $25k chip they are gonna ask questions.

Agent 488 12-14-2010 07:31 PM

guess he came back and bet it all on red and lost. sucks to be him.

rogueteens 12-14-2010 07:34 PM

I expect they'll be melted down by now.

Depending on how much those chips cost to produce, it's possible it's cheaper than 1.5 million to replace all the chips in circulation. Don't think it mentioned what denomination the chips were, but then again I don't really think I read it.

Internal Revenue Service regulations require casinos to track and report cash transactions involving more than $10,000

C H R I S 12-15-2010 02:03 AM

That takes serious balls

Lester Burnham 12-15-2010 02:37 AM

Large chips (25k) have electronic IDs embedded in them. If he took large chips, they are worthless and he'll get caught.
