My experience with godaddy dedicated server

I had a problem with my mainstream sites getting flagged for "sex" on a well known "adult" host. I didn't think it mattered the host as long as it was dedicated...

wrong... my sites totally flagged on this host so....

I went to godaddy which is a neutral host. Purchased upfront for a shitty dedi at $728 for the year... about $65 per month.

Not managed... all kinds of problems from everything with DNS to emails etc...

Asked for this server to be managed and quoted over 2K for it by godaddy support...

Wow, can't believe this kind of shit is going on.

:mad::mad::helpme:helpme:321GFY:321GFY

cjhmdm 12-11-2010 03:50 AM

so basically, you don't know how to manage your own server, but tried.. then wanted to change your plan from unmanaged to managed but don't want to pay an additional ~2k/year for the managed service?

I'll manage your server for $300/month...

SomeCreep 12-11-2010 03:56 AM

Go with a dedicated from http://www.webair.com. They offer an easy to use control panel and have 24/7 tech support via phone and email.

greg80 12-11-2010 04:09 AM

I had two dedicated servers at godaddy. They worked well and their network uptime is absolutly perfect. But you do need to know at least the basics to get started. But this is no rocket science and you can read it all in their help files. Also support is slow.

I now have 3 servers at webair and one at fdc servers. FDC servers has a bad network uptime, but they have cheap bandwidith and it works well for what I need.

Webair is probably best choice for you. Perfect uptime so far and lightning fast support. I strongly recommend them.

Emil 12-11-2010 04:22 AM

Contact this guy: http://www.supportm.com/
He did managed my server and did a great job. Very cheap, $50/month.
I'm pretty sure he will "fix" your server for a one-time-fee too.

Tell him Emil sent you. ;)

Kiopa_Matt 12-11-2010 04:52 AM

That's because GoDaddy sucks, and Plesk sucks even more. Next time you get a server, if you need a control panel, get WHM / Cpanel, as it's far superior to Plesk. Either that, or get a vanilla install, and have someone setup everything for you, and they'll conform it to your needed requirements. Plesk is very limited though, and not flexible at all.

Anyway, hang on...

Kiopa_Matt 12-11-2010 04:57 AM

Oh, that and next time you get a server, don't with an all-in-one shop who does domain registration, hosting, design, SEO, and whatever else GoDaddy does. Go with a company that specializes in hosting, and does hosting only.

Klen 12-11-2010 06:04 AM

I can manage server for 30$ month.

Wait til you have hardware problems at FDC... talk about bottom of the barrel completely incompetent support...

u-Bob 12-11-2010 07:33 AM

Next time, go to Mojohost or Amerinoc...

CrocMint 12-11-2010 07:50 AM

Never pay for year to new hosting provider even if they offer you huge discounts for this...
Try it for at least 1-2 months,
after that you can switch to yearly or quarterly payments.

Godaddy hosting is known to be shit long ago, so their dedicated servers are same...

BlackCrayon 12-11-2010 08:01 AM

never use godaddy hosting. anyone should know this...

Amerinoc? lol, i had a managed server there when it was Phat and when it went to Amerinoc, they charged me for 1.5 years for a managed server and never managed a thing. i didn't notice they were not patching or nothing because it wasn't a relevant machine, was just something i stored a crap load of non developed domains on and stuff. But you're paying for no extra service there. And one time I had my PHP application suffer from a bug from an older PHP version so I needed a upgrade. The guy wouldn't even install a newer version, instead he blamed me and my application and wanted to view my source code and stuff. It wasn't a random issue, it was a confirmed bug explained.. That's when i noticed the kernel, apps and stuff were never maintained, so all that time i was at severe risk of being exploited. I am application developer with 15+ years of experience. I don't need some hosting jock telling me whats up with my code base and what my problems are when I know what the problem is. Stay far away from there

ErectMedia 12-11-2010 08:07 AM

Been using Liquid Web VPS and Servers for years for non-adult and adult projects. Fully Managed and I haven't had a minute of downtime as they monitor it and I also use a 1 minute monitor on my own as a backup. They host one of the biggest web hosting forums as well. May be more expensive than some others but you get what you pay for. Go Daddy is good for domains and SSL but for hosting I would stay away as any hosting that is dirt cheap is overloaded with users or they charge crazy prices for management.

Supz 12-11-2010 08:34 AM

If you are interested in quality mainstream hosting I can give you a good deal. Galaxy Visions is about 90% mainstream in its customer base. All of our servers are fully managed. You can find out are current specials via the link in my signature. Then feel free to email me with any questions. We have been in business for 8 years and we run our own data center. You can see all the info on our site www.galaxyvisions.com

Brother in law works for a builder and tried to access my site and it was blocked. Contacted IT and told him site was flagged for "sex". Got them to new server and he could access.

"I just went to the website, and it worked. So that must have been it. Thanks.

John,

After what you mentioned over thanksgiving I researched why your IT department software may have flagged the site. Turns out the server I transferred the sites to had a bunch of "adult" sites on that IP prior.

So I switched all the sites, again, to a dedicated server back on godaddy.

There is no reason why an engineering site that has nothing to do with adult should be flagged but I believe that was the reason.

Regards,"

TBH, this sounds like a localized filter at your brother-in-law's location. :2 cents:

has nothing to do with adult host, they'd run a check on site's ip, sow bunch of adult sites on the same ip and flagged it. could have moved non adult sites to different ip on the same box and be fine

All sites are back on old server now with new IP's. Everything is as was and database is updated. Just checking if I need to regenerate certificates since they were rekeyed a few times.

Assuming nobody modified the SSL certs on your old server, your fine. The private keys and CRTs will match up, and nothing needs to be done.

If you already sent them the new CRTs, which have already been installed, then yeah, you'll need to go through the process again. Have your host generate new private key & CSR, plug the CSR into GoDaddy to re-key it, send the CRT back to your host for them to install.

Sorry, but you're on a managed solution, so I can only tell you what needs to be done, instead of actually take care of it.

What does that mean? It doesn't matter, there is no way that company was the only one that flagged the site... just coincidence that he was my brother in law and I saw him on thanksgiving when the transfer occurred on the 11th of November.

It's absolutely one of the biggest sabotages to my business for my clients to not be able to access my site and get blocked because of the IP my sites are on.

bl4h 12-11-2010 11:26 PM

That actually sounds great. I love when no one bothers you. My servers are like my home. I grab my shotgun when the the landlord comes around

icymelon 12-11-2010 11:36 PM

my buddy has a cheap dedi at hostgator and has never had a problem. I think he said its managed and like 70 month. I have a few servers with direct admin that are not managed and I never had any problems. I see on their site the low end one starts at 175. but maybe if you contact them they might have lower end options.

After I did that (moved sites to clean IP's on same box) sites immediately flagged again. Not the IP, it's blocking the host.

Hey go check zonesa.com. Management is included in all their servers.

They are good, reliable and cheap.

Nice 1st post!:winkwink: Anyone looking for a new sever should look at NetNat, have been there for 3 years now and have never been happier!

would be interesting to see if your friend tried to access host's website, just to be sure they're blocking the host as well

I don't think I would trust "zonesa.com" with jack shit considering "they" can't configure their own server.

http://www.zonesa.com works

http://zonesa.com shows the default apache page.

"It works!

This is the default web page for this server.

The web server software is running but no content has been added, yet."

Really. You fail. :1orglaugh
