$600 to spend. Netbook or Laptop?

I'm looking to get a $600 machine here, but I can't decide which way to go. I can easily get a laptop for this much, with better specs than the netbook. But I'm attracted to the small form factor of the netbook.

All I'm using it for is internet, email, IM, and maybe a movie while flying. Oh and either way I'll be running a *nix distro on it, not Winblows.

Thoughts?

if you don't plan on doing work on it then get the netbook it seems you will enjoy it more for your purposes

but if you plan on working on it then a netbook is a bitch with the small keyboard and screen.

Ive been using a 12.1 mini-notebook and love it. Its around 3 lbs, battery lasts 5 hours and the screen size is much more productive than a netbook

you can get dell 1018 for some 300-350$ that will finish the job..

sounds like all you need is a netbook. 6-8 hour battery life.

I'd recommend the Asus netbooks, they run about 250 - 430 on newegg.

I was thinking netbook due to very low price, but Dell has their
Inspiron 15R for $499 with a Core i3 and 4GB DDR3-1333 memory. That's ridiculously good!

you may also want to check tigerdirect.com and subscribe to their emails, they get some ridiculous specials both new and refurbs all the time-

Netbook with 11.6" or 12" :)

MrPotatoBread 12-09-2010 12:19 PM

netbook for sure is the way I'd go.

Frasier 12-09-2010 01:24 PM

I love my netbook

punker barbie 12-09-2010 01:27 PM

buy an ipad instead :)

icymelon 12-09-2010 01:30 PM

$250 netbook. I love mine. or go 800 and get ipad. I'm not an apply guy but everyone loves those

The small screen netbooks are great for surfing/mail/messaging but for doing any real work, the lack of screen size make it near impossible (for me anyway).

Go with a laptop. I have a netbook. It's too fucking small for any real use over long periods

Argos88 12-09-2010 08:08 PM

netbooks will kill your eyes.. you must force your vision all the time..

get a 14 inch notebook.

AVOID HP or shitty sony vaio... get toshiba or IBM lenovo. or if you want something cheaper but still decent, get ACER.

if you get a netbook make sure you get a video card that has video acceleration for mpeg2,h264 and vc-1 or you will have no chance of watching a blu ray on it,dvd should be fine without though

Pretty much this. I bought an eeePC w/ a decent width (1024x600), but with as large and bloated as most window managers are, it was annoying, so I had to mess with everything to make stuff fit.

Then, I didn't really enjoy using it as it was fast enough, but I couldn't run the 40,000 things at the same time that I have become used to.
