It is the first known photo of a human. This is a Daguerreotype taken by the inventor of the process, Louis Daguerre, in 1838. It is a view of the Boulevard du Temple in Paris. To achieve this image (one of his earliest attempts), he exposed a chemically treated metal plate for ten minutes. Others were walking or riding in carriages down that busy street that day, but because they moved, they didn't show up. Only this guy stood still long enough

It's an interesting photograph of Paris in 1838. You have to zoom in to see all the details.

He didn't had to stay there for the whole time. As you can see, he's a bit blurry and 'ghosty' so probably just stood there for 3-5 minutes...

Interesting. I googled old time shoe shine, and in fact that picture shows up in the images results. Here's a quote

"Daguerre already did that in 1838. He photographed the very busy 'Boulevard du Temple' from a window high-up. Exposure time 15 minutes. Note how you don't see any people, bikes, horses or carriages in the roadway. Only a shoe-shine and his customer are visible, in the bottom left corner.
