WASHINGTON (AP) -- Brushing past Democratic opposition, President Barack Obama announced agreement with Republicans Monday night on a plan to extend expiring income tax cuts for all Americans, renew jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed and grant a one-year reduction in Social Security taxes.

The emerging agreement also includes tax breaks for businesses that the president said would contribute to the economy's recovery from the worst recession in eight decades.

The ss tax reduction helps the middle class the most,it only goes up to 100k of income. So he wants to give a tax cut to everyone and helped the middle class with the ss tax cut. How is that funny?

I dont consider myself a supporter but I think this is more effective than giving truckloads of cash to bank of america or general motors.

Brujah 12-06-2010 08:08 PM

Wait for it, I'm sure you'll see some criticism from Vendzilla over this too.

Agent 488 12-06-2010 08:09 PM

it's about compromise now. maybe they gave tax cuts for the unemployment extension.

Because all of the vocal liberals on this board was adamant about the rich not deserving the Bush tax cuts to be extended.

I ultimately think he did well with this and think tax cuts are great, but that's me - I want to hear from the Slutboats of GFY.

Obama turns back on his party to extend Bush-era tax cuts

Democrats have had a few nicknames for Barack Obama since “The One” entered the White House. Their newest is Brutus.

Forced to choose between standing with the Democratic leadership and his own liberal base, or compromising with the ascendant Republicans in Congress, the U.S. President opted to turn his back on his own party.

His own party has been the laughing stock of politics for the past two years, what do you expect? I think he decided on this course of action when Pelosi decided not to retire.

I'm a centrist. I hate both sites equally. Bush was a fucking tard and Obama is in over his head.

But clearly you're a liberal, so could you stop spewing ridiculous shit and actually indicate what you think of this move by Obama?

so, extending jobless benfits is a plus?

what a joke...

too many people on the country's teet if you ask me..

i am for the tax cuts as i think it will stimulate small business investment, but anyone that knows anything about large corporate tax cuts already knows thats large corporations already receive huge tax relief by running offshore incentives for all business done outside of US...

You and I are in agreement about that. But at this point I'm willing to concede my "right wing" views in support of this. The fact is our economy sadly depends on consumer spending and we're not creating any new sustainable jobs and won't be for a long time so for those actively looking for work, they have to feed their families somehow.

To me, capital investments are more important than consumer spending so this is an absolute must.

They don't need to control the Senate. It's what, 51-48 with a few of those Democrats siding with the Republicans? The Republicans might as well be controlling them both.

I would call it compromise. I don't know that tax cuts and increased outgo would work in my budget though. Maybe if I got a good printer.

By what twisted logic does letting people keep more of their own money qualify as "fascism"? :error

How is that compromise? Obama didn't get anything he wanted, where Republicans got everything they wanted.

What a push over.

It was a compromise in that this was the only way he could save himself from taking more flak from the middle class. If he would have said no and stood against the republicans and they didn't budge then he would be the guy who wasn't able to get an unemployment extension through and he just dropped a tax hike on everyone. It would have been bad for both parties, but potentially disastrous for Obama.

He needed to stand up to the republicans and call their bluff months ago before they were in a position of power and he was so vulnerable.

Get used to it, Obama now has to deal with them and he will if he wants to get re-elected.
