When you mouseover a link in an email and it ends with ".ru" what's your first thought?

Well, other than that it's Russian.

Serious question.

Can i tell you a little story..

I have used IRC for like 12 years, not much anymore but i was way into it when i was young.

Anyways once i setup IRC on a mac.. and within 10 mins i got hacked.

I was lucky the person only put some folders on the desktop saying you got hacked, i was on a work pc and would have gotten in shit if they fucked shit up.

12 years using IRC and i never got hacked.

But then 10 minutes on a fuckin mac?!

They are only more secure becuase no one writes viruses for them, becuase 99% of the world use PC's :)

kazbalah 12-06-2010 01:01 PM

Oh and to answer your question - the same thing everyone else thinks.. virus, scam ect, poor russians haha, no one will trust them.

Bingo. Once it becomes worth the effort, you can count on that changing.

I'm sensing a theme here.

CDSmith 12-06-2010 01:50 PM

Like today for example, I (again) had several dozen spams in my inbox, quite a few saying I have "Facebook contacts pending", all containing the link "Click here to see your new friend requests"

Email looks legit enough, as if it's from Facebook, but of course being the the savvy web veteran that I am I always mouse over the links and look at the actual destination before even thinking about considering to maybe click them or not, and sure enough... .ru sites, every one of them.

My first thought? Sorry to my Russian friends and contactrs who are legit, but my first thought is pretty much this:

"< roll eyes > < laugh > Gad damn Russian scamming fuckers! How can they think this is going to fool anyone except for morons. Do people really buy anything from their so-called pharmacy after being Facebook-duped into clicking their shitty worthless link?"

Then I start to imagine the sheer number of air-headed sheep out there who click on anything put in front of them and I have my answer... which is yes, a large number of people absolutely do click and provide their CC #'s. I feel little to no pity for such people, but it's still quite pathetic so I feel sad.

Then I lol, and delete.

to be honest, any spam from any TLD has the same type of reactions that you quoted in your post.

Actually I'd be willing to bet money that .com links in spam emails get clicked on far more than .ru links, at least among the N American and UK populations.

Far more.

pinkbits 12-06-2010 02:09 PM

dont click

Buzz 12-06-2010 02:12 PM

PR_Glen 12-06-2010 02:14 PM

on a pleasant note, i just found out that I am royalty and am about to inherit 1 000 000 euros from one of my heirs in Nigeria... all that is left is for me to pay the legal fees!

I would bet that opposite is true also

signupdamnit 12-06-2010 02:29 PM

I usually copy and paste all links from email for privacy and security reasons. I also use Linux (AND I generally know what I am doing) so chances are the link isn't going to do shit to me.

Totally agree with you. But at the moment, its a refreshing change after years of using a PC that I no longer need to worry about clicking links. Thats all :)

Miguel T 12-06-2010 03:26 PM

Do not open.

Steve Awesome 12-06-2010 03:29 PM

Scammer! It's sad, too, because there's a lot of countries whose domains don't draw that instantaneous connotation.

Jim_Gunn 12-06-2010 05:12 PM

Anyone who is doing international business with North Americans from Europe or especially Russia who is legit will surely be using a domain email return address or gmail or similar familiar email service suffix, not .ru if they are smart. Just too many spams & scams with country specific domain suffixes.

Except for .ca (Canada). I've also never had or seen a problem like this going on with .us, and very few .co.uk links give me cause for concern either.

.ru is in a class by itself for scamming and spamming.

bl4h 12-06-2010 06:09 PM

I too am a domain racist.

.ru and .tk are probably the worst

.net is probably the one I trust most but that's not saying much
