GOOGLE copyright ramps up fight against piracy

Google will no longer suggest to users search terms that point towards copyright infringing content, the company announced on Thursday in a concession to rights holders...

zdnet article

- We’ll act on reliable copyright takedown requests within 24 hours.

google blog

Mutt 12-04-2010 01:32 AM

that would be great if they respect adult copyright owners rights too. if google really did remove links to infringements i think sales would go up 20%.

of course the smart surfers know about filestube and rapidqueen and others like them.

Davy 12-04-2010 02:20 AM

You mentioned they will remove the suggest feature.
What they SHOULD do is remove all the links instead.
You can search for any DVD title and you will get a full first page of torrent results - suggested or not.
Google is the worst copyright offender on this planet.

It isn't only for autocomplete.

Links will be taken down from web search and blogger too.

citation?

article says it is solely about instant search, I thought?

Paul Markham 12-04-2010 04:30 AM

It's a very small step. If Google totally bans all piracy site surfers will try on Yahoo or any SE that doesn't block what they're looking for.

A well intentioned mistake.

[2] will be a source of contention as to effectiveness and as self censorship. More importantly, this policy admits a responsibility for search results and their editorial control ? legally they just trapped themselves.

Co sign very true

mikees 12-04-2010 05:09 AM

this is only for the sugest feature.
Google is a search engine and they censure their results only when justice ask them to do it.
Be happy to take advantage of Internet democracy, it will not last much longer.

That won't stop Paul, Robbie and DWB posting about it being brilliant for porn and this becoming another 7 page thread.

The way I read it that is for links on google search.

They say they will implement four changes, above is one, terms banned from autocomplete is another, as is the AdSense anti-piracy review..

Did you guys read the official google post or only the zdnet article?

Google will implement four changes, article has four bullet points :

1....DMCA takedown requests for Google products (starting with Blogger and web Search)

2....Google suggest term ban

3....Google Adsense review

4....Better preview content

I could be wrong of course but that's how I read it..

TheSwed 12-04-2010 05:49 AM

that's good news for Yahoo and Bing
:2 cents:

Mutt 12-04-2010 05:53 AM

jesus can anybody actually read here?

"Google said it would act on correctly submitted DMCA removal requests within 24 hours."

Yes
http://googlepublicpolicy.blogspot.c...er-online.html

?We?ll act on reliable copyright takedown requests within 24 hours. We will build tools to improve the submission process to make it easier for rightsholders to submit DMCA takedown requests for Google products (starting with Blogger and web Search). And for copyright owners who use the tools responsibly, we?ll reduce our average response time to 24 hours or less. At the same time, we?ll improve our ?counter-notice? tools for those who believe their content was wrongly removed and enable public searching of takedown requests.
?We will prevent terms that are closely associated with piracy from appearing in Autocomplete. While it?s hard to know for sure when search terms are being used to find infringing content, we?ll do our best to prevent Autocomplete from displaying the terms most frequently used for that purpose.
?We will improve our AdSense anti-piracy review. We have always prohibited the use of our AdSense program on web pages that provide infringing materials. Building on our existing DMCA takedown procedures, we will be working with rightsholders to identify, and, when appropriate, expel violators from the AdSense program.
?We will experiment to make authorised preview content more readily accessible in search results. Not surprisingly, we?re big fans of making authorised content more accessible on the Internet. Most users want to access legitimate content and are interested in sites that make that content available to them (even if only on a preview basis). We?ll be looking at ways to make this content easier to index and find

Exactly. Anyone who can't find it on Google should be bright enough to use Yahoo.

Do a search for free porn on Google and see what comes top.

SmokeyTheBear 12-04-2010 08:54 AM

outrageous considering google doesnt comply with dmca, they don't comply with pretty much anything. Youtube dmca process is hugely flawed , they only comply with dmca's from "friends" and they comply with invalid dmca's. I asked google to remove my house from streetview after they announced they would remove anyone who asks. After waiting 2 weeks for my takedown request they replied with a letter saying i should click the "report abuse" link on google maps ( this is how they got the request to begin with ) , they sent the email from an addy that cant be responded to. fuck gogle

seeandsee 12-04-2010 09:12 AM

this is huge move, just imagine drop in SE traffic to all stealers!

potter 12-04-2010 09:28 AM

I can't imagine them having the staff to properly manage this. Hopefully it works though, without flaw, and without room for mis-use.

Agent 488 12-04-2010 09:42 AM

they already remove listings due to dmca how is this news?

http://www.chillingeffects.org/notice.cgi

maxxtro 12-04-2010 10:03 AM

People will just move to a different search engine. Google will lose traffic on this move.

Serge Litehead 12-04-2010 01:12 PM

+1 rep for google!

they already accept DMCA takedown notices already, and the turn around is less than 24 hours now.

so that nothing new, that just a statement of what they are currently doing now.

they do that now

DWB 12-04-2010 03:31 PM

Getting the listings removed faster will be nice. They are sloooooow to respond usually.

It's not a game changer but every little bit helps.

But the vast majority of surfers are retarded monkeys. Without Google, they'll be shit out of luck.
