Time for a new desktop

Shit, I'm still using my 98 gateway with a 40gig hardrive and it's time for a new desktop. Every day, I've got to reboot this fucker... most of the time the keys lock. I just bought a Sony Vaio (laptop) and it's cool but I need another desktop. What's good under $3,000.

BVF 01-14-2003 06:57 PM

I had the same thing happen with my gateway....it's slow as a snail. I'm about to take a class at a local college here to build a computer. For $350, they give you a computer kit and you get three days to learn the in's and out's of building a computer.

That will help me learn to build my own systems for the future....

My gateway is quick but I've got a viruses and other stuff on there... I'm getting signs that it's time. I'm not good at building computers... I've got a "tech guy" that comes here and does my stuff. Good seeing you in Vegas... you going to Mardi-Gras?

init 01-14-2003 07:48 PM

you cant build a good comp for $350, if you want a top notch comp built by yourself your looking in the $800 range, but if you want to build an acceptable comp you can probably build one in the $500 range

I'm not doing it for the new computer per-se...I'll be building it and letting one of the kids use it...But at least I'll get to learn how to build the fuckers. I can use my new found knowledge to build me a super-deluxe system...

And webguy, I might go to Mardi Gras. I need to take the babymomma on a vacation so that she won't bitch between the las vegas convention and the miami convention....

If you are willing to build your own system. I have many recomendations for great hardware. It's very simple to put one together. FInd someone who knwos what hardware won;t confilct, Order it. Take the parts out of box, SLap it together. Just skimm the motherbaord manual for jumper or bios settings, all basic stuff. Voila power it up, Install your os, downlaod all updated drivers from hardware manufacturers. Voila. New stable kickass system. Or just order a *gasp* Dell. Get a bussiness system for under 1500 with good features. Just don't expect it to be all that upgradeable.

its all about the motherboard

Yup. I picked up a cheap ECS k7s5a. Contrary to what people claim that you only get what you pay for, I think it's a sweet deal. Really solid and kickass motherbaord. All the hardware I have now runs smoothly on it. If i took all my hardware and mated it to a *gasp* via based board I'd have mega troubles.

BJ 01-14-2003 08:02 PM

Ive got 450mhz once a systemax piece of shit, swapped the board and now it rocks as secondary pc.

We just got a new Dual Processor G4. God I love Macs.

Dude I'm using a Gateway too!!!! It's slow like hell, and the hard drive makes the weirdest most annyoing noises for the longest time whenever my pc freezes. I know I probably have viruses and all kinds of spyware crap on my pc. Everytime I type something its logged, for example if i go to gfy it will say
http://www.sexyque.com/cgi-bin/proli...ckyourself.com

I think someone is logging everything I type or something!!!! And Adaware does not get rid of this crap. And whenever I reboot I get " A problem has been detected with your hard drive, pls consult your manual"

Or "Unable to read drive C. Retry, fail, or abort?"

Yea, sounds like a virus... I get a beep, then everything freezes. Plus when I reboot, I had 2 different things that popup, that I have to close. I don't think it's a Gateway issue, I think I downloaded a few viruses... by accident of course.

iwantchixx 01-14-2003 08:25 PM

I once got a virus. Nimda. Fucking sucked ass. It propoagted on my hard drive to 1200 files. Came from a gallery that was listed on the hun once, go figure. NAV freaked out at the gallery. Said it failed to clean the viru. And 10 minute slater I had 1200 variants of it on my hard drive. Since then I've gotten teh newest NAV, all updated and patched. A hardware firewall/gateway/router. A real time trojan scanner. And a really good web-trap for my browser.

evildick 01-14-2003 08:29 PM

If you don't want to make one yourself, but still want the best quality system you can get, try:

http://falcon-nw.com/

They certainly aren't the cheapest, but you won't find a company that sells better quality systems. Alienware used to be like this when they first started but then they went for quantity over quality.

Check out the paint job on this sucker:

Decent system for over all use

You might want to tweak the config a bit but this is a good start.

Wow, that's alot of detail... thanks, it's all good. I'll take that all into consideration when I get it.

bigdog - hey sweetcuties do you still edit your video on that old machine?

Yep, I do everything on my old Gateway, it's a part of "SweetCuties" history :thumbsup

evildick 01-15-2003 01:49 PM

Don't buy the Extigy sound card. It connects via the old USB method (not USB 2.0) and is prone to dropouts and other problems because of it. It can't handle the bandwidth.

The internal Audigy 2 platinum is a nice sound card though.
