Concealed Weapons Permit In Your State?

In Seattle, WA, I got my concealed weapons permit by filling out some paperwork, sending my prints to the feds, and paying a fee. Took about 10 minutes. A few days later, my permit came in the mail.

In NC...where I thought it was law that every citizen have a gun :) ....they make you take an 8 hour class to become "certified" for a concealed weapons permit. This surprised me.

Do you have a CWP? If so, in what state and what steps did you have to take to get it?

Just curious....

Va2k 03-02-2010 06:06 PM

I just got my card today, I had to go to a 3 hour class then to court filed out papers then to police station took finger prints it all cost me close to 110.00 here in Va

bausch 03-02-2010 06:11 PM

I don't need a concealed weapons permit because I never leave my house or go anywhere.

Interesting. One of the instructors I emailed said that the class meets all VA requirements also. I'm guessing that since we're somewhat close to the VA line that he's drumming up business from anywhere he can. 3 hours sounds much better and just about every class instructor I've found holds their classes on Sat. mornings from 8-5. I just can't do that. I've begged him to let me take the class in small parts over several afternoons :)

Yikes. No class in WA. 3 hour in VA. 8 hour in NC. 12 hours in CA.

I don't have a basement. No one knows where I live and I am relatively safe because I have neighbors all around me. I never open the door anyways and no one knocks on it. I have nothing of value for people to steal.

brassmonkey 03-02-2010 06:36 PM

fuck a permit

venus 03-02-2010 07:49 PM

8 hour course in arizona, plus you have to qualify with your weapon.

Vendzilla 03-02-2010 07:53 PM

More people get them, crime goes down

Get a gun and a shovel

The instructor mentioned having to qualify with my weapon. I assume it's that I know how to load, unload, and hit a target? I hope I don't get all Barney Fife when it's my turn! :)

I am in Virginia and I have had mine for a year now of the five it is issued for.

It took me about one hour to watch a video online then take a couple quizes. The cost is $39.99. When you complete the program you just print out your gun safety certificate and google for the needed paperwork to file at the circuit court. I think it was $50 non-refundable application fee for a 5 year permit.

MAKE SURE YOU READ EVERYTHING ON THE APPLICATION. You will need 3 (THREE) copies of everything they require even the application and then 1 (ONE) self addressed STAMPED envelope for them to mail you your permit. Then it is all up to the state police background check. Here in Fairfax County they do not require fingerprinting so I could skip that step.

I believe they say it takes 45 days to make their decision and they do not lie they will take exactly that long if you live in a decent sized city. If you don't hear anything by then by law you can go in and get a 90 day temp issued but you will receive a decision either way by mail so I wouldn't nit-pick over a day or two.

I hope this explains a bit about getting a permit in Virginia and if you are interested in this easy route I ask that you check http://www.concealed-carry.net to start watching the video. You can pause or restart the video as much as you need to feel comfortable but honestly if you have handled a semi-automatic pistol you will have no trouble with their tests.

EDIT: I am going to say one more time READ EVERYTHING on the application and remember THREE copies. If you fail to do so they will refuse automatically and keep your $50 application fee and assume you are too fucking stupid for a permit

i have ga cwp and like you just had to get prints to run through fbi db and you get cwp in mail 2-3 weeks later. no safety course required.

here in ga anyone (except convicted felons) can carry a gun on holster in plain sight..

what i love about cwp here in ga is i can buy a hg with no waiting period..

also, show le cwp when getting pulled over for speeding and they let you go...

i got pulled over twice for speeding in the last year and each time i said i have a gun and showed them my cwp and they said ok, slow it down and goodbye...

I have found this to be the case as well. They know you have a gun before you tell them though if you are driving a car registered in your own name but they always appreciate when you give them your permit and tell them if you are or are not carrying they have always let me go for speed, tint, etc without even running my license.

Are you in Northern VA? I didn't realize how widespread some places are in VA until I moved here.

Barefootsies 03-02-2010 10:43 PM

Michigan allows it.

However, I do not feel the need to carry a weapon.

slayer69 03-02-2010 11:19 PM

haha. seems everyone is strapped in the states. unreal. I'd love to carry a gun.

venus 03-03-2010 12:02 AM

ya but the problem is, most of those people have no business carrying a gun...Go into a gun store here and you will see what I mean...some serious nuts. Want to see the cream of the crop... go to gun show..they are worse the the gun shows...kinda reminds me of go to a vegas casino on fight night.

It is true a lot of people really should have formal training before handling a gun especially for at home protection but the numbers don't lie it does lower crime. Why do you think there are so many robbings/mugging/car jackings/etc in Washington DC and Maryland and not in Virginia? Less people? nahh. Less cops? nahh. Oh yeah, they don't fuck with people cause most are packing. I never hear of a car jacking in this area and that is the only reason I can think of. Look at everyone of the major metro cities in the united states and see how high the crime is in cities with handgun bans. If they really want to clean up these ghetto areas allow more concealed permits. Criminals and Felons will have guns illegally anyway if they want them and are banned from buying or carrying so you are only keeping law-abiding citizens from carrying with these bans.

fatfoo 03-03-2010 02:53 AM

Concealed weapons are not permitted in my area. Even non-concealed weapons are not permitted. Handguns are permitted to be used in gun clubs if the person has a certain license.

Rules are different for police officers.

Oh... I'm not in a State. I'm in a province of Ontario in Canada.

Nope 5 mins from Norfolk in a place called Hampton

trevesty 03-03-2010 03:38 AM

I'm pretty positive it's an 8 hour class here in Missouri, but I've yet to fully research it. I intend to get my relatively soon, but first I've gotta stop spending so much damn money on ammo and save up for a carry pistol.

3 hours of classes in Florida, fingerprints and about 45 days. It carries over to my house in TN and when I am in NC I can either conceal or open carry.:thumbsup

I love the grip extension but the gun isn't a Springfield! I was close to getting an XD but it made little sense for me to be a carry gun with a 17-19mag clip LOL My gun is a Smith&Wesson M+P 9mm Compact and I loooove it more than any other.

would you be able to carry the gun with you or keep it in the car (gun empty and bullets in the trunk)? because I don't think you can carry the gun with you unless you have a certain kind of business that oblige you to keep a big amount of money at your office or carry it out to the bank or home.. then you will be granted a concealed weapons permit.. if you have different information let me know.. :)

Some things for you to consider:

1: Many states allow non-residents to apply for concealed permits.

2: If you get a permit in one state, your rights may transfer to other states automatically.

Examples:

A resident of NC is approved for a permit. That person is then licensed to carry in the following states by default:

Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia

A Washington resident's permit is valid in these states:

Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington

Based on this information, if you are indeed a Washington state resident as your profile says, you can obtain a single permit there that will allow concealed carry in WA, VA, and NC.....Actually, even a non-resident of WA can get a permit in WA that is honored in those same three states. A NC permit cover those states as well.

Since a number of states allow non-residents to apply and since most states cover a number of other states...One can easily obtain permits in a few key states and be licensed for conceal carry throughout most of the U.S.

If you don't want to sit through a 3 hour class, 12 hour class, whatever...Check the laws in the surrounding states and see what they require for a non-resident permit and if that permit extends to your area. In some cases just having a permit from one state will let you bypass the classes and whatnot in other states.

If you get a conceal permit in Oregon then you can drive into Washington, show them your permit, fill out some paperwork, and they pretty much hand you a WA permit.

Oregon permits cover 15 states. Washington permits cover 21 states. Getting BOTH permits means you can carry concealed in 23 different states.

And a Virginia permit cover you in 28 different states....25 for a non-resident VA permit.

"Gun nuts" are not the people you need to worry about. I'm more concerned with the people who carry and don't have permits or those who have a permit but no training. At least the nuts know how to hit a target.
