Where have all the bad ass, big dick, larger than life ROCK STARS gone?

I'm listening to Hendrix right now and thinking, what happened to musicians? Nobody throws TVs out of windows any more, nobody found dead from heroin overdose in a seedy Hollywood Hotel, nobody is crashing cars and banging groupies with no rubbers in the green room.

Hendrix, Morrison, Joplin, Moon, Bonham... you know the type, all dead but larger than life ROCK STARS!

The last of them was probably Motley Crue, but even they have settled down. Aerosmith is old, so is the Rolling Stones, all bad asses in their day, but no more.

We need some Rock Stars again. :2 cents:

hjnet 07-29-2009 01:31 PM

You mean, like Lady GaGa and Britney? :)

Jim_Gunn 07-29-2009 01:36 PM

You are showing your age, DWB. Rap & hip-hop stars are the new rock stars as far as most young people are concerned, and the shenanigans they are up to make the rock stars of yesteryear look like choir boys.

I remember reading an interview with a few of the guys from Pantera when they were on the Ozzfest tour years ago, and they were complaining about the same thing. They wanted to party and drink every night, and the guys from the other bands were drinking bottled water, eating healthy, and ::GASP:: talking to their girlfriends on the phone. Rock might not be dead, but all the real rock stars are...

LeRoy 07-29-2009 01:58 PM

I disagree with you Jim. These "bad-ass" hip hop "stars" of today are nothing but show. They are corporate slaves who have their entire street cred image manufactured by their management companies.

DWB is right. The REAL rock stars from the 60's and 70's didn't fuck around. They fucked more women, did more quantities of more toxic drugs...and would kill your ass if you got in their face.

I was reading where Keith Richards had a house down in Jamaica and sometime in the late 1970's (when Keith R wasn't being held in Canada on drug charges)..Peter Tosh was staying at his house down there with his Jamaican mafia.

So "Keef" got on his private jet, flew down there by himself, engaged in a knife fight with Peter Tosh and threw his whole crew out on the streets.

These days the "bad ass" rapper would call his management team and US magazine. Or worst case scenario we would have a Biggy/Tupac "war" where neither of those two guys did shit but die. They had their "posse" do all the dirty work.

DWB is completely right. These pussies in the music industry these days are a sad bunch.

Yeah, I've known Jesse since back when he was in a band called PG-13 and used to come see my band play at Charlie McGruders in Atlanta.

But even he is now going "country"

And his shit is pretty much for show too. He and his brother have always had plenty of money even when they were trying to put out an image of the "common man" working hard. Their dad is a doctor I believe. I know that we were touring the entire country and busting our ass. And then here came Jesse with a semi-truck full of brand new equipment...before he had even played his first gig!

mynameisjim 07-29-2009 02:20 PM

I've thought this for a while. The rock stars of old took more drugs, drank more booze, and fucked more women then any mortal man was capable of. The bands today look like the kids I see at the mall or the douchebags I see walking around downtown.

Don't get me wrong, I like the music these days for the most part, but the era of the "rock star" is over.

Even look at Lindsey Lohan. In the news they portray her as so out of control because she had a little fender bender and got caught with a little bag of coke. That's nothing compared to what rock stars did in the old days.

No shit! Jimmy Page probably spilled more heroin in a single day than all the drugs that Lindsay Lohan has ever done in her life COMBINED. :1orglaugh

Heh-heh...speaking of The Rolling Stones...a buddy of mine owns a lighting rig company out of Atlanta. And when the Stones toured a couple of years ago in support of "A Bigger Bang", they hired his crew to rig lighting.

Well, my buddy gets a phone call from the Stones road manager. They are sending one of the guys home that week. Fired. My friend asks "why"?

The answer? Because he made the mistake of staring at Mick Jagger and looking him in the eye. :1orglaugh

Lesson learned: Never look Mick Jagger in the eye. Ever.

I'm a rock fan too, not a rap fan. But DWB and Robbie you guys sound like a couple of old codgers talking about the old days. I don't care if he does drugs or not, but someone like Fifty Cent or one of the other even less popular rappers alone probably made more money last year on everything from touring to ringtones to branded sweatshirts and various other business deals and fucked more groupies than all the members of some some of your favorite bands did in an entire career.

No way bro. My favorite groups are Zep, Stones, Beatles, Aerosmith, etc.

Paul McCartney could buy and sell Fiddy Cent and hire him to mow his yard. The only two guys in hip hop that really made any money are Jay Z and Sean Combs. But even they aren't in the league of a Beatle or a Rolling Stones member.

Of course the old school guys have decades of earnings. So forget that for a second...just go back to say 1975. Rock bands were selling out stadiums. Even now the Stones sell out STADIUMS full of people. But go back to those old times.

Those bands were making millions of dollars back when a million dollars was worth a whole lot more than it is now.

I don't think we'll ever see Fiddy Cent fill up a stadium with fans. Hell, he couldn't fill up a middle sized civic center on his best day. I've been to a couple of hip hop shows, and they were almost like tent festivals.

There would be about a dozen "acts". All with a DJ. And the guy who is supposed to be the star of each act (for instance "fiddy cent") would be onstage with 20 other black guys all screaming and yelling out of time to the beat and grabbing their cocks. I literally had no idea WHO the supposed "star" was in each one. Just looked like a bunch of dudes on a corner with no rhythm to their "flow"

At least an old school rock star LOOKS like a star. You would damn sure know it if Steven Tyler walked up to you on the street. He has branded a look and style over the years. Meanwhile I couldn't tell Fiddy Cent from Leroy Jones on the street.

I know you're trying to be hip and shit Jim....but seriously...the music industry hasn't made any real stars since the 1980's when they started trying to control the entire creative process. Which of course eliminated all the truly creative artists and left us all with propped up "house niggaz" taking their orders from old white guys in suits.

now youre showing your age....thats very naive...50 cent or any so called musician of today (and i use that term very very loosely) cant hold a candle to the days of trashing hotel rooms, fucking groupies, doing blow for days....50 cent and all these "corporate" musicians would either die or cry to mommy if they tried to party like Keith Richards, Jim Morrison or any rock group from the time when it was about the music and not the look....

as for making money...maybe, why because they suck as real musicians and can only make money by flooding the market with bullshit gimmicks like ringtones, hats, necklaces, branded sweatshirts....even THEY can tell that they are a passing phase...50cent 10yrs from now will be forgotten....funny the Rolling Stones (as just one example)...have gone decades...

Real Rockstars didnt give a fuck and were talented as musicians
Poser Rockstars are whatever flavor of the month record companies was to "label" as a bad boy, but in reality they are just posin'

CaptainHowdy 07-29-2009 04:22 PM

I blame it on the audience...

Pornwolf 07-29-2009 04:28 PM

Some of you are showing your age.

I know, or have at least met, most of the big rappers and their crews.

Sure, some of them are pussies in real life... but most aren't. Hell, even 50 Cent burned someone's house to the ground... on top of other stuff. Jay Z... anyone remember the time he stabbed someone about 5 years ago? The story went away quietly. When it comes to ass kicking the Rock Stars have nothing on the rappers. Nothing at all.

When it comes to fucking groupies it's a push. And that's only because AIDs didn't exist back then. These guys get more pussy of every nationality 24/7 than the old Rock Stars did.

Rappers absolutely are the new rock stars. Admit it. Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, Eminem, and many others would get mobbed if they go out in public everywhere from Jacksonville to Japan. Most of the old Rock Stars other than the lead singers in a handful of bands wouldn't.

When it comes to money, well, it's hard to beat the old rock stars. But on a time adjusted comparison the rappers would win that one too. Did The Stones, or even The Beatles make $100 million their 4th year in existence?

No. Not even close. But 50 Cent did.

Of course he will never make the 100's of millions 20 year later touring, but we live in a microwave society where stars die quickly. There will never be another Stones or Michael Jackson or Madonna with the kind of longevity and material that will allow that. Those days are over.

Well.. although Radiohead might, too bad they are so personally boring. If they had the Gallagher brother's persona they'd be the biggest band in the world right now.

Don't think I am happy about this. We need some real ROCKStars that play ROCK music. The genre sucks right now because there are none. Rappers are cool, but the music world is a bit un balanced right now.

Big Red Machine 07-29-2009 04:31 PM

The Doors, Zep, Stones, Aerosmith:They were all Pioneers...no doubt. What came before them alittle twist of the hips from Elvis. These guys shattered the mold, and no has been able to fill their shoes.

Robbie 07-29-2009 04:51 PM

Pornwolf...I'm not sure where you came up with that stuff.

Snoop Dogg getting mobbed wherever he goes? Give me a break! Hell he's been to several Adult Industry shows. :1orglaugh

I moved here from South Carolina...Snoop Dogg played a night club in Greenville, SC a couple of years ago. And didn't sell out.

Rappers are rich. No doubt. They get pussy. No doubt. They party. But no way do they compare with the sheer debauchery of true old school rock stars. Not even close!

And which one of these rapstars sold 100 million dollars worth of their albums in 4 years? Nobody BUYS albums anymore. They might have sold a ringtone or a tshirt or ANYTHING but real music. And even if they did sell 100 million dollars worth of MERCHANDISE (cause it sure ain't albums or selling out tours performing) the rapper himself didn't make that much. The white guys in suits that own their ass made the most money.

And check this out:
The Rolling Stones' A Bigger Bang Tour was a worldwide concert tour which took place between August 2005 and August 2007, in support of their album A Bigger Bang. The group played over 130 different songs on it. It has become the highest grossing tour of all time with $558,255,524 earned

That is over 558 MILLION dollars on their most recent tour alone. You're way off base.

slavdogg 07-29-2009 04:54 PM

kid rock and fred durst came close to bad ass rock stars

epitome 07-29-2009 04:57 PM

Where have the rock stars gone?

Check her vagina...

epitome 07-29-2009 05:03 PM

The thing about rock stars of the past is that they are so approachable and accessible today.

My brother is always going to shows and somehow hanging out and smoking a bowl with them at the end of the night.

In fact, his wife is IN LOVE with Donny Osmond. He sent Donny's road manager an email and my brother's proposal played out like this...

Donny asked my brother's girlfriend at the time (now wife) to come up on stage. He sang Puppy Love to her while my brother proposed to her. The vid is hilarious because she is obviously in total shock that Donny was singing her a song that she didn't even realize my brother popped the question at the same time. They spent the rest of the night with the band.

Donny Osmond isn't a rock star, but is the best example I have of how easily accessible the stars of yesterday are.

Van Halen - grossed $93 million on their last reunion tour (and without bassist Michael Anthony).

Let's see Fifty Cent do that 30 years from now (counting 1978 as VH's big launch year).
