anyone else think NIN is way overrated?

I think a cool logo and being around at the right time (and maybe a cool video and song or two) has gone a long way, but NIN and Reznor are not deserving of the super-status that they seem to have....

Sly 10-13-2008 05:00 PM

I like some of their stuff but never really got into the hype. I prefer Manson any day of the week... even though from what I understand they are good friends.

'So Fucking Money 10-13-2008 05:10 PM

old stuff is good. New stuff they arent concentrating on it as much. A good example is the slip. They just slipped that thing onto the net. Didnt put too much time into it.

BlackCrayon 10-13-2008 05:15 PM

Pretty hate, broken, downward and the fragile i think were all great albums.

- Jesus Christ - 10-13-2008 05:26 PM

Not overrated at all.

His new shit kind of blows, but everything from pretty hate machine, broken, to the downward spiral was great stuff and highly innovative. It was industrial that was actually accessible to the masses.

He almost completely lost me after the perfect drug. Since then good songs are rare.

Not overrated at all. Period.

Manson wouldn't be shit without Trent Reznor. Trent gave them a record deal and produced their first album. Reznor thanks Brian Warner in the liner notes of the EP Broken, and Manson appears in the video for "Gave up" (sans "scary goth" makeup), in which he plays guitar and sings back-up.

Reznor produced and released Manson's Antichrist Superstar album. Manson then went on to have an overflated ego, and totally ditched Trent, which resulted in the NIN song "Starfuckers, Inc.," which is entirely about Manson. They patched things up before the video for "Starfuckers, Inc." was released, which is why Manson appears in the video with Trent (kinda makes the song lose its impact, if you ask me). I'd post the video for "Starfuckers," but its renamed "Starsuckers" to suit MTV and I think that sucks...lol.

Anyway, Trent is, and always has been an experimental artist. Some get it, some don't. It honestly took me a few years before I began to appreciate the genius of Pretty Hate Machine, Broken and the Downward Spiral. The Fragile has some choice cuts on it, as well.

And I think most on here would appreciate the fact they he said "Fuck you" to MTV about performing "The Hand That Feeds" on either their music or movie awards show because they wouldn't let him hang a picture of G.W. Bush behind the band ("what if this whole crusade's a charade / and behind it all there's a price to be paid / for the blood on which we dine / justified in the name of the holy and the divine").

I admit to having lost interest in some of NIN's newer stuff, but that's mainly because he's creating and experimenting in styles that don't appeal enough to me. Overrated? No way. If anything, I would make the argument that he's underrated, because I bet half of the nine inch nails fanboys and groupies that sport their NIN t-shirts when a new single comes out don't truly understand or appreciate the brilliant mind of Trent Reznor.

AlienQ - BANNED FOR LIFE 10-13-2008 06:33 PM

Not over rated whats so ever.

Newer stuff maybe not so good but there are some that are worth picking through. NIN has made more popular songs than most bands.

And NIN working up Mansion is well within the tradition of rock and roll. How many people these days work up another band? Not many.

tony286 10-13-2008 06:40 PM

some great music, again i thinks its hard to write bitter and pissed music once youre rich.

Bojangles 10-13-2008 07:00 PM

Never really got into them. I've heard some of their stuff, but not much.

Verbal 10-13-2008 07:13 PM

Pretty Hate Machine might be in my top 20 albums of all time.

How old are you?

donkevlar 10-13-2008 07:17 PM

Not overrated at all.. dude basically invented a musical genre and he's still putting out great shit.

Manowar 10-13-2008 07:17 PM

like a lot of bands, i still listen to their older stuff a lot more than the new stuff

Completely agreed. I also think pretty similarly about Tool, earlier stuff was amazing. Most of Maynard's better stuff in the past 7 or 8 years has been through APC.

"invented a musical genre"?

d-null 10-13-2008 10:43 PM

I mean, just as a small example, some of the people that were involved in these bands might have something to say about that?:

and industrial sure doesn't begin and end with nin by any measure, there is tons of industrial music out there that I would rather listen to than nine inch nails..... don't get me wrong, I remember when head like a hole first came out and thinking it was greatness... I just think that nin is just one of many bands in the industrial genre :2 cents:

SomeCreep 10-14-2008 12:19 AM

i think they're underrated

sysk 10-14-2008 12:25 AM

Most people i know don't know them so I guess they're not over rated. However, they got a certain notoriety in the geek community because they are very open about new content distribution platforms such as bitorrent and the open source model applied to music... Reznor got his official ThePirateBay.org account :)

mynameisjim 10-14-2008 12:30 AM

Because of the crossover appeal of Pretty Hate Machine you have to give him his credit. He's had a few good cuts over the years though since then. The drum break during Perfect Drug is still one of my favorite parts of any song.

skrog 10-14-2008 12:34 AM

The Fragile is fucking awesome. I can't wait to see them live in November. :thumbsup

crockett 10-14-2008 12:48 AM

Pretty Hate Macine was a the best album. I haven't been a fan of much of the newer stuff.

Yep, whatever he was taking back then he needs to get back on it.

Only thing I've really listened to of his new work ...

You're keeping in step, in the line.
Got your chin held high and you feel just fine
'Cause you do what you're told
But inside your heart, it is black
And it's hollow and it's cold

Just how deep do you believe?
Will you bite the hand that feeds?
Will you chew until it bleeds?
Can you get up off your knees?
Are you brave enough to see?
Do you wanna change it?

What if this whole crusade's a charade
And behind it all there's a price to be paid
For the blood which we dine
Justified in the name
Of the Holy and the Divine

Just how deep do you believe?
Will you bite the hand that feeds?
Will you chew until it bleeds?
Can you get up off your knees?
Are you brave enough to see?
Do you wanna change it?

So naïve
I keep holding on to what I wanna believe
I can see
But I keep holding on and on and on and on

(Repeat x8)
Will you bite the hand that feeds you?
Will you stay down on your knees?

He was like the Kurt Cobain for this style of music which already had a limited audience ... great lyricist / poet / artist ...

In 100 years ( if we're still here probably not ) I think you would hear about Trent Reznor before you heard about Linkin Park. When you do some of the songs he did it's real hard to "out do" yourself. Most of what I hear today on the "alternative" radio... if that's even a term anymore is Fluff

If you think he's overrated you're not listening:2 cents:

Why does everything have to be rated anyway ... music today is overrated

Violetta 10-14-2008 01:39 PM

I like them, but not a big fan!

According to him it was magic mushrooms for the downward spiral. "Everything's blue in this world". Pretty hate machine and broken seem mostly inspired by pussy.

Andy CHOOPA 10-14-2008 02:00 PM

Yup Overrated

Dave_Lethal 10-14-2008 02:19 PM

I dont really care for industrial, never been my thing and NIN is certainly no exception. I wholeheartedly agree with the previous statements regarding rich and famous people making angry and depressed music, nothing annoys me more than hearing some pretentious crybaby rock star belly ache about stuff when you know that he makes absurd amounts of money, has throngs of women throwing themselves at them and most people hre encounters on a day to day basis kisses his ass. I can think of a lot worse ways to live.

Andrew138 10-14-2008 02:22 PM

I'd take Ministry over NIN anyday.

V_RocKs 10-14-2008 03:37 PM

Over rated for about 20 years now.

finally someone who understands a bit of what I am talking about :thumbsup

Anyone who thinks NIN / Reznor is over rated is ignorant to music. I'm not saying "omg you suck because you hate this band". I'm literally saying you're ignorant when it comes to music. Maybe you simply listen to what you like, and don't really stretch your interpretations of music outside your own little theater of pleasure. But it goes without saying, anyone who knows anything about music understands and knows Trent Reznor. Wether you have a major in music, just have extensive knowledge, or are in the business.

Seriously, if you just want to listen to whatever music you enjoy. Then so be it. Turn on your radio, or flip on some music television. But for the love of god, don't go around acting like your little shit opinion matters. It simply puts your ignorance of the subject on display. I'm not the biggest fan of classical music. But that doesn't mean I'm going to go around and say "Who else thinks Beethoven was over rated?".

There is a reason the first course you have to take in college for music is "Music Appreciation".
