Beautiful country. I'm doing Cuba this year, but Iceland definitely comes next along with some Eastern Europe.

Skinnay, how did you go there? Did you buy a trip via a travel agency or did you just fly there and did the hiking on your own?

Dejan 09-13-2008 03:10 PM

If you're going to Iceland from North America to Europe, try to catch an IcelandAir flight. They will give you a layover in Iceland for up to a couple weeks. I was flying from Gotenburg to Halifax so the flight was about $700. I didn't go through any agencies or tours, but I did rent a car. Renting a car is super expensive ~$90 a day in Iceland, but I only had 9 days and wanted to see as much of the island as possible. There were some amazing campsites where I left the car and spent a few days up along the glaciers. If you go, you absolutely need a full gortex outfit and tent, the weather can change so fast like you won't fuckin' believe.

It must have been amazing to see glaciers. Where did you stay? Did you camp most of the time? Where did you get your food? How were the people?

I camped at campsites half the time, random places up in the mountains the other half. For food I mostly ate peanut butter and crackers (its the easiest thing close to a meal thats easy to carry), but other times I ate at gas stations that had lamb and potato dinners. Also there are lamb hotdog stands scattered around that are pretty good.

The city Reykjavik is pretty cool, the entire country gets shitfaced here on Friday and Saturday nights, and there are super hot drunk bitches everywhere. But other than those two nights not many people can afford to go out. So use the week to get outside the city, and hardly anyone lives outside of Reykjavik, so a 10 minute drive basically puts you into some incredible wilderness where its you and mostly goats.

Skinnay, one more question for you - when do you think is the best time of year to take a trip to Iceland? Which month - to get the most of it? Are any times of year particularly not friendly (weatherwise, kind of like when they have hurricane season in the Caribbean).

May - September is definitely the best time to go. The "summer" there is about 40f during the day, although there will be times you can walk around in a t-shirt in the sun. I would also definitely rather have the 24hour daylight than 23 hour complete darkness. Also in the winter most of the roads in the highlands are literally chained off and shut down. I have not been there in the winter but it sounds like most of the island literally freezes over. It would definitely be a cool expedition, but I doubt you would see as much landscapes. Most of the pictures that look foggy were taken around midnight - 3am. Keep in mind that the really harsh winter starts in september and ends in may, so june and july are really you best options.

Also when hiking.. watch out for these fucking nasty terns. They don't like when you get near their nests. I stumbled upon this one a few miles into a hike..

https://youtube.com/watch?v=V-A0s1rE9fk

They will literally smash right into your face if you dont duck or hit them. I tried to run past this guy, and realized I was in a breeding ground for 5 more nests. A whole bunch of them were swooping at me for about 2 hours. It was some pretty scary shit, I was worried one would catch me in the side of the eye. And running away with a 40lb pack on jagged rocks, is not easy :)
