Again. Last time it was because I couldn't prove that I wasn't going to work.

This time, apparently going into the US for the day to have a meeting is not allowed unless I have a visa/work permit. How do I give myself a visa if I'm a Canadian independent contractor?

L0stMind 10-08-2007 08:13 AM

Ummm....

Wow?

I've gone down for work several times... to tour facilities, to meet people and never had a problem - also never had a visa. Of course in every case I was making the decision whether or not to purchase something from a US company...

That's some bad luck

xclusive 10-08-2007 08:14 AM

We all know how important to keep you Canadian workers out of the US. You won't works as cheap as the 13 million Mexicans we just let walk in.

I'd have no problem getting in if only I was Mexican.

Problem is, He was probably flagged in the system by the cock that gave him a problem last time. So this time he got flagged and now that he's in the system he's fucked and for no good reason.

I'll send you a sombrero for christmas, Then you should be able to just walk by the border patrol and not even have to show papers or talk to them as they won't see you.

Exactly... I tried to go down there to meet the team at ATK. Not to actually work, just to say hi and meet everyone. They denied me cause I couldn't prove that I wasn't just moving in and staying to start my new American career.

So then I try again with my wife and kid... they pull me in again, laugh at my story of how I was denied, and let me through no problem.

And now this time, they see that I was denied because apparently I was going to Florida to work... so this time, they refuse to believe that I'm going just for the day to have a meeting... despite my return plane tickets being in my hands.

Ugh!!

Why 10-08-2007 08:32 AM

fuck, im a canadian citizen and have been denied entry into the country for various reasons at various times, it goes both ways man.

JasonSmokes 10-08-2007 08:35 AM

agreed.. denied entry to the states for having my camera in the "on" position. got put in that little white room for 3 hours while they searched my car. Was told if I attempt to enter again they will confiscate my car and camera.

"Just let walk in"? Border enforcement is much heavier on the Mexican border than it is the Canadian border.

When asked about the nature of your visit to the U.S. did you answer "meeting"?

Yes, that I have a meeting with a hosting company in Phoenix tomorrow and I'll be back right afterwards.
When they asked me later I said that I wasn't purchasing anything, not making any deals... just a discussion about what we can or can't do in the future.

Yeah, I was returning to the US from visiting Canada and they almost didn't let me back in. The dumb fucks took my beef jerky too!

One stupid bitch asked me why I had an Hawaii drivers license if I lived in America. :1orglaugh

Should stretch a trip like that out to three or four days and say "pleasure". Gotta learn to fuck with customs or they fuck with you.

cool1 10-08-2007 08:54 AM

should have just told them you were going to spend some of your high canadian dollars. might have got lucky

:1orglaugh You don't have to be smart to work for customs, just suspicious.

Jman 10-08-2007 09:01 AM

We got the best excuse in the world to go to US. Drive to buffalo and tell them you're going to spend the Mighty Canadian Dollar in their country then hop on a plane from there.

BradM 10-08-2007 09:10 AM

Stuart. I have a TON of experience with border issues and successful entries. If you want some advice on the situation LMK.

Peaches 10-08-2007 09:15 AM

I've always been told to NEVER tell customs in any country that you're going there to work - always vacation.

Yeah that makes sense because if your are working then you might decide to stay, but on vacation you have to return for work.

ronaldo 10-08-2007 09:44 AM

I'd get on the phone with, I dunno, whoever you're supposed to I guess (I'd probably start with the supervisor AT that border crossing and go from there), and try to sort out the problem before you try again or it'll probably just happen again. It's in the system, it isn't going anywhere and a lot of border guards are like cops...power tripping.

I used to get stopped regularly going down and I finally asked the guy if I'd been flagged. He told me no, which is probably what they're supposed to say, yet I haven't been stopped since.

Coming BACK however, is a different story altogether.

Note-While I used to get SEARCHED all the time, I was never altogether refused entry...and I'd always say I was going for work if I was. The fucked up part now is if they DO search you at a land crossing, you have to fill out a form that ASKS, "Have you ever been refused entry into the US". Your answer is gonna be a flag in itself. And there ain't no lying about that one.

yup....pretty much

and even the ones that just crossed the border, that everyone knows is illegal

& up at the 7-11 selling dime bags of weed to HS students

we're not allowed to say anything to them, or call the cops....cuz its racist to call an illegal alien....an illegal

you can pretty much tell when they are illegal, cuz they can't speak english & don't know who the first president was

& thats a requirement of getting in the country (other than vacation)

Do your self a favor. LIE!!!!! tell them you are going XMAS shopping at Maceys. Then do it.

GAMEFINEST 10-08-2007 10:30 AM

they are very strict

StuartD 10-08-2007 10:31 AM

The best was, the guy says "Why would they want you to go to this meeting and not just send an American?"

I felt like saying "Well, you outsource the creation of everything to China, Taiwan and other asian countries, and every US call center is actually in the middle east. Do you seriously think that a US company has never hired a non-American to do something before?"

I didn't say it, but I really wanted it.

shake 10-08-2007 10:38 AM

Crazy to hear about all this. I've crossed the border many times for business reasons, and told the customs agent what we're doing - and we've never had a problem.. There must be some luck involved depending on who you talk to at the border, and how much trouble you have.

Many, many, many years ago I was going to Seattle to help my Mother move from one house to a new house. Myself and my two best friends (brothers) that I grew up with headed down and at customs they stopped us. Turns out my friends couldn't go help because they would be taking jobs from American moving companies. I explained that my Mother wasn't going to hire movers, that it would just take her and the help she did have longer to do it if we didn't get there. They decided I could go, but my friends couldn't. Not much help because I wasn't driving.

That is so retarded.... where do they get this "taking jobs away from Americans" crap??

I mean, I feel like I can't pick up a piece of garbage in the US for fear that I'd be taking someone's job away and be arrested.

Not that I could get in to do it anymore anyway.

It seems that a lot of you guys think that the Mexicans just walk across the border with no questions asked. You are SOOOOOO wrong.

More people are turned back at the Mexico borders than any place. On top of that, the border wait in Sandiego is on average 2.5 hours to get into the US.
