Google gains more power

Google isn't big enough. Right. So, now the dingbats who run some of the big news services are making it bigger. How? Well, they reckon it's okay to make Google "take" their feeds rather than link to their very own customers, thus screwing those customers and further benefiting Google. Let me try to explain.

The Google News site robotically scans hundreds of news sources and provides a faux front page of popular news items, with hundreds, if not thousands, of redundant links to those stories (as they are carried by local news outlets). Google links to these outlets, and this is where the reader then goes to read the story. If the story is from the Associated Press , then the local outlet pays the AP for the content.

Until now.

The AP, among others, saw this as some sort of vague copyright violation. It demanded that Google pay a license fee and link to the story directly from the Google site. So, Google said okay. Now, the newspapers?who collectively "own" the AP?lose a link and a potential View the full story

Because your link goes to the exact same thing you copied and pasted and not the complete article.

Yes, and the link I posted goes directly to the article. You may as well have posted the entire article, or posted a link that went to the actual story instead of going through multiple steps.

Its perfectly fine, its just annoying as hell. Why not just copy and paste the entire article to the site instead of making people click around?

I was referring about posting the whole article on viral. Right now there is a set limit count of 750. Of course i don't need a programmer to copy and past here lol. But even if i did paste the whole story here that would then kill the ctr and well you know how that goes...

KimJI 09-04-2007 01:46 PM

Let me get this straight

- You are annoyed that Google "take" feeds and post it on their site instead of linking to it

- And you present that story to us by linking to YOUR site where you placed a part of the text you stole, instead of linking straight to the source?

How is that different than what Google does?

1. This is a webmaster board.

2. Most of us are smart enough to hunt for the real link and *ARE* annoyed that we need to click twice for the story.

3. There isn't a hope in hell i'm clicking banners on a blog thats linking to a story i'm looking for.

So... why bother?

Ignoring the irony points of your initial post for a moment... which are certainly there...

Assuming you're not paying the wire service/publisher, by copying that much of the article - and making money off of it - you do realize you're opening yourself up for a lawsuit, right?

You're profiting off of copy written works that are not your own. :2 cents:

D 09-04-2007 02:36 PM

Actually... the article mentions the whole copywright thing, too.

The irony in this thread is as thick as the fog on a cold London morning.

Its like they are spamming surfer crap on an adult webmaster board. Very annoying, and almost insulting.

I dont care how much you spam gfy. I just find it stunning you actually just admit you are here only for the "CTR" of posting "RSSed" articles.

As I told you in your other thread...

setting up rss feeds to display their articles on your site then making threads about them is a bit redundant no?

You havent done this once or twice because it was interesting topic, you are doing it to build traffic to viral discussion.

http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showth...ight=redundant

I didnt say you were doing anything illegal, but to say you are doing this for ANY other reason than getting traffic is a lie.

if this is the method of success you guys are trying to take, i give your site 2 months before all the posts are "0 replies and comments' much like it is now...
