Is Dell the best PC makers?

Sure they have had some problems.

But they still seem the best and a good price.

The thing that bugs me is that if you go on the Dell site and select a pc, it ends up costing you more once you add on bits you want (extra memory and so on).

And then they (for us in the UK) charge about £60 for postage and packaging.

hjnet 09-03-2007 04:02 AM

Let's say they're one of the cheapest, I doubt that they're the best around.

testpie 09-03-2007 04:16 AM

Certainly not in my experience. Either buy your own or shop around at stores such as ebuyer, CCL and Micro Direct - although those last two stores only really apply to shoppers in the UK.

potter 09-03-2007 04:48 AM

build your own. best pc maker = yourself.

MBS Auto 09-03-2007 04:51 AM

I am a big HP fan...

v4 media 09-03-2007 05:56 AM

I've built my own from components and had dell machines, for gereral stuff dell's are fine and if you check their deals, you can get free delivery in the UK.

You work for Dell obviously. Anyone else wouldn't say that :D

I've had too many Dell PC's in work and family environments and they're knocked together with the least respect and quality ... They load your PC up with shit, and then when it goes wrong aren't too helpful.

That said ... even Michael Dell admitted this and recently said he was gonna sort the problems out.

mandrake 09-03-2007 06:51 AM

dell sux end of story...if you want a real computer build it yourself

Angie77 09-03-2007 07:42 AM

I prefer apple.

geeknik 09-03-2007 07:49 AM

I love my Dell 24" LCD. Obviously they didn't make it, they just branded it with their name, but you're NOT going to find a better 24" LCD on the market.

munki 09-03-2007 09:19 AM

I love my dells, had nothing but great support from them...

Jim_Gunn 09-03-2007 09:20 AM

I have five Dells here. They work great and are expandable enough and can do my processor intensive video work Just purchase your extra RAM on the aftermarket.

Shawn Smut 09-03-2007 09:21 AM

sony vaio is really good but can be costly

voa 09-03-2007 09:21 AM

Yeah build your self,Dell i am not sure about that.I more like Compaq.

Big_Red 09-03-2007 09:23 AM

I have around 10 Dells. Just bought a new Dell laptop. All my puters are running 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week. I have had only one hardware failure and that was the DVD burner on one of the workstations. Called Dell and they had someone out in a couple days with a new one. So yeh, Dell rocks. :)

CarlosTheGaucho 09-03-2007 11:49 AM

very good price / rock solid reliability ratio

peterk 09-03-2007 12:08 PM

I like dell computers ... fast and reliable at resonable price :thumbsup

I've always either built my own computers or bought Dell. Currently I have three Dell PCs and on Dell laptop. Two of my PCs are a few years old; Never had any problems with them. I have Vista on my new laptop and never had a problem with that either.

Why build your own? Every time I've built one I've had problems, usually something silly like the sound card or video card not working properly. Why in the world would I want to spend six hours buying parts and putting it together when I can spend the same amount of money and get something already done?

If you have that kind of time to be tinkering around with building computers... then you have too much free time.

Flynn 09-03-2007 12:24 PM

I've had dells and they always break down on me. My best luck so far has been building my own PC's. Build your own you will be happy.

cess 09-03-2007 12:33 PM

I doubt anyone here is really going to have a clue if dell is or isn't the best PC makers. But they really don't make computers. All they do is put them together and sell them. Although I know their motherboards are labeled dell and not another brand which might mean they actually make the motherboard. But I would bet they get another company to make the motherboard and just slap their name on it.

As for the parts inside most dell computers I would say they are usually not the best. Take the PSU for example, most of their PSUs are weak and not quality PSUs. They usually do enough to get by but good luck if you start putting more parts inside because the 12v rail(s) usually aren't that great.

I would suggest getting someone who really knows what they are doing to build one for you instead of buying a dell. You could always do it yourself but then that's a waste of time if you have plenty of cash to pay someone else to do it.

I know alienware use to tell you all the parts and brands which most of the time were at least decent quality parts. But I'm not sure if they still do that since dell bought them out.

I've had my dell Inspiron laptop running almost nonstop for 20 months now.

It's by far the best and most reliable computer I've ever owned.

Never had a problem with it once.

It's getting to the point where I am going to have to reinstall windows soon, the system is starting to get a little sluggish...but this is windows not the pc.

Like someone else said in this thread, I couldn't be happier with my Dell.

This thing has been rock solid and i would happily reccomend one to anyone else. The next laptop I buy will definately be another Dell.

(I don't work for them either, just a very satisfied customer:))

Will Saucebox 09-03-2007 12:43 PM

if you know what you're doing, put your own together.

pornask 09-03-2007 12:57 PM

Dell have well priced computers. Many hackers are known for using dell computers...

well they are not the best but they aren't the shitty either...the customer service is true though. They aren't helpful when you are getting problems with your Dell.

mistergardener 09-03-2007 01:30 PM

The Customer Service people would just listen to your problem and laugh at you thinking how stupid you are for not bein' able to fix your predicament. Trust me. The CS headquarters are just near my place.

KILL_FRENZY 09-03-2007 02:06 PM

you can build your own and it will be cheaper

pornguy 09-03-2007 02:26 PM

For desk tops I have never had a problem with HP. My laptop, which is HP gave me a few issues but they were minor ones. But still had to be sent for repairs.

Fap 09-03-2007 02:41 PM

i have had no problems wiht my xps laptop..

Horny Dude 09-03-2007 03:40 PM

I love my Dell Computers. I have had some issues, but they corrected them without delay. They also have some killer discounts if you find the right coupon code.

TwinCities 09-03-2007 05:15 PM

I think Apple is the best computer but in terms of a PC I would buy an IBM in a heartbeat ESPECIALLY the Thinkpad line for laptops.

zand_stein 09-03-2007 07:40 PM

the best pc makers for me is apple...........

Slick 09-03-2007 08:20 PM

I have a Dell M1710 laptop and love it. As far as desktop computers, I've built the last 4 that I had, it gives a nice sense of satisfaction powering it on for the very first time and seeing it work :)

As far as computers, I often wondered about Falcon Northwest, how the fuck can they stay in business with the prices they charge ??? Sure, they might be good, but with the extra you spend, it's not worth it - http://www.falcon-nw.com/

minusonebit 09-03-2007 09:13 PM

Dell fucking sucks. My first lastop was a Dell. It was the first Dell thing I have ever bought and it will be the last. The fucking CTRL key broke off within a couple of months and wouldn't go back on, then the screen loosened up so that it wouldn't stay up and I constantly had to tighten the screws. The power adapters died right and left, I pretty much had to order a new one every six months. So yeah, FUCK DELL.
