"Chris Mallick Starts Movie Production Company"

http://www.variety.com/article/VR111...goryid=13&cs=1

Mallick launches production company
Internet entrepreneur starts L.A.-based shingle
By DAVE MCNARYInternet entrepreneur Christopher Mallick has launched Oxymoron Entertainment with a $50 million bankroll, aiming to finance films in the $2 million to $10 million range.
First project from the Los Angeles-based shingle will be a comedy-drama "The Great Intervention," centered on young adults coming to terms with the serious side of life. It's penned by Andy Weiss and Jamie Abrams and set to lense in late spring.

Oxymoron's attempting to take advantage of what it sees as a trend toward boutique-based filmmaking under which specialty divisions acquire distribution rights without having to pay for development costs or incurring bank finance charges.

"I believe there is an interesting frontier that is emerging for smaller and mid-range product due to the convergence of traditional and new media," Mallick said.Mallick's background is in operating companies that process credit card transactions over the Internet. He's the owner of ePassporte.

NoWhErE 02-07-2007 11:52 AM

No offense to Chris, but I hope he finds the right talent to take on that kind of project. Otherwise its 50 mil down the shitter.... or one helluva big tax write-off

Webby 02-07-2007 12:11 PM

Sounds like a good time to flounder into another industry before the Epass indictments start....

Sure EB - hope he does not get crashed for the Epass stuff, tho odds on, it's only a matter of time. Nobody needs to get hung up for that trivia.

Agree on the movie stuff - tho gambling in the movie industry is worse than the odds in a casino unless there is a strong "team" in place with an established track record and experience. But yep - anything is possible and there is a bad need for actual content - and this can be done in the $2-$10mill range. Chris sure likes a challenge :)

well once he gets celeb status he can basically kill people and walk away

if i ever needed a serious criminal attorney to defend me id rather go ahead and pay some movie producer 250k to let me have a decent part in some movie (obviously not some tom cruise flick but a decent movie) and get a public defender

ladida 02-07-2007 12:48 PM

I'm not sure how to react on this news. It can mean something very bad, or something that i couldn't care less about. I hope it's the latter.

Only know three people to attempted to do what Chris "appears" to be heading for - two had more money than God - and both produced, one to three movies each and a few of these movies got exposure and filled some seats, but with widely varying financial success. Both of them decided other investments were easier with less hassle and stuck to real estate etc.

The third is a "professional filmaker" (basically an editor and went thru the training/apprenticeship time in documentaries) and did the usual struggle for a budget and his production company ended up with a financial deficit, but still under $10mill - and this was eventually covered by a generous "donation" from a high-profile moviemaker in the industry. But he did continue and make.. dunno.. around 12 movies as a director only and did scripts from Freddrick Forsyth's novels which were fairly successful.

Suppose it's more the cutting out of a niche in that industry - some stick with it and others speculate in the hope of earning.

DaddyHalbucks 02-07-2007 01:16 PM

Is there alot of competition? I imagine there is.

Anyway, best of luck Chris!

Sure DH - used to be in that industry - there is competition within the industry since everyone and their dogs are either producers, writers, whatever - tho they may never have made a movie.

The people who usually survive are those who "suffer" and get thru hard times:) Unless there is an attractive "package" that others are willing to fund and some security of distribution in place - it's a struggle to raise finance and that can go on for many years before any prospect of production.

Got a girl hanging around now with $5mill in the pot to spend on scripts and she has bought rights to a couple already, but keep telling her that is only a very first stage and the main challenge is ahead in every one of her scripts - crazy kid, but good luck to her :pimp

Good luckkkkkkkkkkkkkkk !!

SweetT 02-07-2007 07:46 PM

Heard about this earlier today but just got to a pc long enough to post my congrats to Chris!! I echo what Ron said...the man is smart and he has been known to stir up other markets before...why not Hollywood??

Remember, when he came to Paycom he didn't know much about the IPSP business but I would say he made out pretty well in that deal....I think I have heard similar stories told about when he started in Medical Billing, too, but no one seemed to be surprised when he sold that off for humpteen-bazillion dollars either.

The reality is that once you learn simple business, the products really dont matter...whether you are selling joins, hosting, hoes, or motion pictures...it is all the same. Anyone who says any different does not understand the TRUE art of business.

My dream was to be an Actor back in the day. I always said if I make enough money I will star in my own film LOL. I did many little things in film back in the day when I was a young trouble maker.
