Choose: Muay Thai or Tae Kwon Do

Hey Guys,

I stopped doing any sort of martial arts training, or exercise at all about 8 years ago and got fat... about 190lbs. (I'm 5'6")

About 5 months ago I started exercise with some decent weights and dropped most of the fat and picked up some muscle again to get to a pretty solid 175lbs.

Now, I want to jump back on the martial arts thing again but I've got a problem.

I would ideally like to do Muay Thai for the obvious reasons, but the closest club is about 30 minutes drive away. The next closest martial arts club is TKD and about 5 minutes drive.

Soooo... what should I do!? 30 minutes drive and Muay Thai, or 5 minutes drive and TKD?

it depends on how flexible you are. TKD need more of it.

I'm not really familiar with both martial arts. However, I think they can be both very effective exercising routine.

do you plan to attend a webmaster convention soon?

Enema 11-07-2006 07:45 AM

No, but I'm a nice guy anyway so I wouldn't need to deal with all the forum BJJ experts :winkwink:

CuriousToyBoy 11-07-2006 08:20 AM

If you want to fight Muay Thai, no question. Kickboxing rocks, even if you just like to spar.

If you just want to learn a martial art, Tae Kwon Do.

NinjaSteve 11-07-2006 08:30 AM

i think im not that young for those things

reynold 11-07-2006 08:35 AM

TKD. However, you should first learn to appreciate "jogging" as a good exercise going to the TKD club. :pimp

Take TKD. We need more Rockettte dancers.

Yeah fuck those bastards. MMA is where it's at.

Don't waste your time with TKD AKA as McDojo's.

Drive the 30 minutes for Muay Thai, you train large muscle groups, and can use in a real fight. There's a reason why MMA fighters have Muay Thai as part of their training.

You mean Brazillian Jiu Jitsu, right? :)

Some people just don't like the idea of another man between their legs. It's an acquired taste. :)

LittleSassy 11-07-2006 09:05 AM

i'll go for the Muay Thai...had a couple of sessions before and it really can lose fats easily

Pleasurepays 11-07-2006 09:44 AM

i hate tai kwon do with a passion. its not a "martial art" - its a "sport" and one that has very little to do with effective and useful fighting techniques.

BluewireAngie 11-07-2006 09:48 AM

Muay thai! :thumbsup

polish_aristocrat 11-07-2006 09:51 AM

Krav Maga - TKD teachers are all getting certified in it.

The new McDojo.

I had a video to show ya but i cant post URL yet.. Go to youtube and search for ramon dekkers, youll soon figure it out. I used to do a little bit of muay thai myself, I would deffenetly go for muay thai.

Metalsound 11-07-2006 10:07 AM

Muay Thai is better in every way. Thats what I think, I use to do it and its pretty tough to train.
But it depends on the use you are going to give to it.

Anthony 11-07-2006 11:11 AM

Muay Thai

Anderson Silva uses nothing but PURE Muay Thai

Nicky 11-07-2006 11:17 AM

Muay Thai hands down

schneemann 11-07-2006 11:27 AM

Kung Fu.

TKD is a pretend martial art.

Don't know much about Muay Thai

rjinnc 11-07-2006 11:31 AM

Me and my 2 sons got to high red belt in TKD before
I decided it was a joke. Go Maui Thai...

tranza 11-07-2006 11:34 AM

What are the "obioues reasons" for practicing Muay Tai?

rjinnc 11-07-2006 11:34 AM

I went that route the closest to home. I took
TKD mainly as an activity I could do with my
2 sons. They fought in lots of competions and I judged
several forms and fight competions. We had alot of fun.
But in a real fight don't think TKD would be as good as Muai
Thai

starpimps 11-07-2006 11:37 AM

definately muay thai . i just started and i have been in TKD for 5 years and i want to say it is pretty useless in real life situtations

I did teakwondo for about 4 years a couple of years ago and I love it. Make sure you train WTF and not ITF. ITF is boring, more karate like no-tuching thingy. WTF is what you see on TV and in the olympics with guys in vests kicking the crap outta each other. Cool beans.

Although Muai thai is the ultimate exercising sport and over all very good it might not be worth the 30 minute drive if you got a taekwondo club so close by.. just my:2 cents:

squishypimp 11-07-2006 12:16 PM

tae kwon do, a friend of mine did it in high school and said it was really fun :)

Lance69 11-07-2006 12:33 PM

Muay Thai, hands down. TKD is fun and will work you out but not in the same way Muay Thai will. Plus it's way more practical. Plus it's a different kinda cardio. I've seen marathon runners come in for a Kickboxing or MMA class and be spent way quicker than the regulars there.

_Richard_ 11-07-2006 12:35 PM

Muay Thai

Odie 11-07-2006 12:40 PM

if yuou're looking to do something just for fun and exercise and not considering taking something seriously, do the TKD.

Also consider how valuable is your time?? do you have lots of free time? 5 min or 30 min..huge difference for a "hobby" as opposed to something serious.

I love my muay thai and just recently got back into it as well. :)

cheekycherry 11-07-2006 12:57 PM

Most here are not talking from experience, so take most comments with a pinch of salt.

Here's the FACTS...

I am going for my Black Belt in (WTF - the one they do in the Olympics) TaeKwonDo early next month so I feel I am qualified to comment on this (and I might not say what you think I'm going to say)...

My verdict?

Depends what you want it for. If you're looking to fight, in real life, forget TaeKwonDo, to put it simply, it's a joke. It's true what the nay sayers say, it has become a sport.

Now if you get a GOOD class, with a great instructor, TaeKwonDo can be fun, you'll meet great people NOT interested in kicking the shit out of each other, you'll get fit, become more flexible, make good friends, massively increase your confidence etc. You really will.

But if you're going to be spending 6 months in Jail it ain't gonna help much in the prison showers with "Bubba".

Yes, you WILL become a better fighter and you will learn how to have awesomely powerful kicks and be FAST, but using that knowledge on the street might not be the best thing to do.

For example, if I'm in a bar brawl, I'm unlikely to use *anything* I learned in TKD (even though we are taught self defense techniques too).

So, sorry for long post, if you're looking to learn how to effectively FIGHT, go for Muay Thai. Hands down. Worth the drive. No contest.

If however, you're looking for a more all-round experience, consider TKD.

I'd try a session or 2 of both and see which you like best.

Hope this helps in some way.
