Laura Bush admits to having pirated copyrighted videos

I was watching CNN's On the Story and they were interviewing Laura Bush. The interviewer asked her if she watches Desperate Housewives and she said she no but she has a stack of DVDs of the first season she needs to get around to.

Problem is, the first season of Desperate Housewives still has a few episodes left and will not be out on DVD for several months. If she has DVDs someone either burned them from TV recordings or downloaded them from the internet.

Wonder if it's same person that downloads songs for the president's ipod that they can't find at iTunes? :upsidedow

Well, the thing is, making a copy of a show and giving it away is quite different in the eyes of the law than time-shifting a show yourself.

I guarantee you the law would not fall in my favor if I made copies of a copyrighted program I recorded and distributed and my family got on television and told the world about it :upsidedow

This has nothing to do with liking or disliking Bush. I like Laura Bush a lot. In fact I LOVED her last night at the White House Correspondent's dinner, she was fabulous.

The point I was going to get to with this thread is that if even the president and first lady do it, something's wrong with suing Joe Average for doing it.

SL|M! 05-01-2005 10:30 AM

do TV shows fall under the same laws as movies? I tought there was a difference. In any case, who the fuck cares

SL|M! 05-01-2005 10:31 AM

why is Tivo legal then?

please.. we are talking about a TV show.. Not a copy of a DVD.. If you seriously think that you cannot ask a friend to record you a certain TV show.. there's a problem.. :2 cents:

i do know that a lot of stars or famous people will get copies of shows from the studio .... even ones that haven't aired yet ... I'm pretty sure she'd be able to get a copy of the season sent to her if she wanted it ..

I can burn a whole season of a show on DVDs and distribute them to my friends? Want to ask a copyright lawyer about that?

This is true, but not the case as I understood her to say it.

Distribute? Who talked about distributing? Having your friend, personal assitant, daughter, etc.. make copies of a show for you is NOT distributing...

Do YOU want to ask a copyright lawyer about it?

Television shows fall under the same copyright as any other audio or visual work. I imagine the people sued for having mp3s or shared videos on their computer fuckin' care. :winkwink:

No, it is not legal to make a copy for another person (even though many people do it). You are only permitted to record for your own use.

When youre a celebrity you get advanced and free copies of things.
Howard Stern talks all the time about watching movies home that are just hitting the theater because the studios send them to him.

As far as I know, copying a movie at the theaters is illegal. However, in the Betamax case, the Supreme Court ruled that making a copy of a TV show was a legal, non-infringing use of broadcast content.

So its not the same

shhh, mardigras is having fun

NaughtyRob 05-01-2005 10:53 AM

My brother has a DVD burner connected to his tv, he records movies all the time. Its legal as long as you dont sell them.
:2 cents:

SL|M! 05-01-2005 10:54 AM

Not to mention,if the fkn first lady calls up ABC and ask for the TV show on DVD, I'm pretty sure they would give it to her, even though its not released

You are missing the point. The laws you state say you can tape a TV show for your personal use. It is forbidden to transfer that tape or other recorded media to someone else.

Already addressed. Not the case here. :)

SL|M! 05-01-2005 10:56 AM

it might be her TV and her fkn assistant pressed the record button

if the company who owns the copyright decides to send a copy of the dvd to the PRESIDENTS WIFE before its released i think they'll get away with it.

If I record a movie and you are my roommate and come home and watch it at our home, that is perfectly legal. If you take that tape over and give it to your mom that is against the law.

The transcript isn't up yet. I think she said her daughter and others record things for her, but I can't say that for certainty.
