will domain names become obsolete?

As in 10 years from now we would say "you had to go to www name extension to visit something called webpages"..

What will replace it? Or is the domain name system something that will stay here for 50 years to come just like phonenumbers?

I think they will be around for quite awhile... icann and the big guys put too much time/work/effort into building the system and now they are doing more to protect identities, etc...

Then again... will the world be here in 10 years? Will you die tomorrow? Who the hell knows buddy.

xlogger 03-12-2005 10:35 AM

Yeah but 50 years from now there wont be an internet, it will be replaced by something elce. So the internt will become obsolete. :winkwink:

Ok, so i answered your question. What do i win?

Damn college is paying off, i feel smart.

wjxxx 03-12-2005 10:36 AM

Domain names will be forever

Manansala 03-12-2005 10:36 AM

Domain names will stay as long as your computer requires a keyboard and a mouse. When computers cease to require both devices, expect domain names to dry anytime soon. But for now, I like having keyboards and my pen mouse so.. domain names fading won't be anytime soon.

Pete-KT 03-12-2005 10:37 AM

there like phone numbers there not goin anywhere

polish_aristocrat 03-12-2005 10:38 AM

dont scare me, I would die from hunger :(

FunForOne 03-12-2005 10:38 AM

I think the biggest changes in the near future will be in the extensions.

Pen mouse? Is that thing annoying... I couldn't imagine picking up a damn pen everything i wanted to click on something.

azguy 03-12-2005 10:38 AM

Who remembers AOL Keywords? :)

azguy 03-12-2005 10:41 AM

.com is a stupid extension when you think about it. Funny how it ended up like this. I think we will see a major change around 2012-2015. Don't know what, but I think .com will lose its value. I don't buy this 'it's prime real-estate' crap... It's just a very very very long fad, but it will be phased out somehow. Remember this thread (check it in 2012 on web://gofuckyourself :winkwink: ).

it will neat too see what the Internet turns into in 10 years.

No worries, when everything evolves, you'll be there... if you're still alive. In any case, your spirit will stay with us.

Don't die early.

A pen never leaves my drawing hand... maybe coz I'm an impulsive doodler and a Professional Designer, which I will assume you're not.

V_RocKs 03-12-2005 11:00 AM

It will go the same way IPv4 is...

Correct. The biggest change with be in technology. That is, how people access it. You will probably see some form of phone/cable/internet/movies/video games more accessible and widely used that today. Something both in equipment, and software but that's about it.

I think that in terms of this industry, you will see more merging of companies, and a mirror of what goes on in the real world where most of the porn starts to become controlled by conglomerates, squeezing out the small fries.

bump for a good thread

Maximillion 03-12-2005 02:30 PM

With the Internet there is always going to be room for the little guy. It's where the industry is going right now (mainstream and adult) -people are starting niches of existing products and then microniches of those niches.

An example would be dating... and now theres dating with pets:

Ron Bennett 03-12-2005 05:42 PM

800 toll-free numbers have existed for around 35 years and yet they're still highly sought - companies desiring an easy to remember vanity 800 number (and/or 888), even in the age of the net, will pay top-dollar for it - many folks still use the phone - and on top of that, many on-line businesses are finding that the phone is as important as ever for business.

With all that said ... yes, things change, but often no where near as quick as one might expect ... the current domain name system has been around for 20 years already. I, for one, can safely predict that domain names, as they exist today, will remain viable for at least another 15 years - there's nothing else out there that even comes close to performing the same function as domain names - keywords are dead, search engines are increasingly becoming diluted (customized search results, once fully implemented, will kill many businesses that rely on top positioning in SEs), ppc is expensive/limited, etc ... and thus high quality domain names is the ideal way to drive traffic whenever possible ... even for folks with with great SE rankings, etc ... they should still have an easy domain name if they seek repeat traffic/word of mouth promotion.

In a nutshell, domain names will remain viable for the foreseeable future, since there's nothing else out there on the horizon to replace their function.

Ron

domains are like icq. never going any fucking where.

Rui 03-12-2005 05:53 PM

Its scary to even think how things will be in 10 years let alone 50 (most of us will be alive by then tho)

It would take a MASSIVE standards shift to get that off the ground. Very politically difficult too, as exemplified the difficulty re email standards for antispam prevention.

Illicit 03-12-2005 05:56 PM

The sky is falling ! Sell all your elite names to me for $100 each ! Get out while the gettin is good !

Same here, it would really hurt me bad, my domains are valued more than the value of homes in Los Angeles.

but seriously domains are like real estate, they will be here for the rest of our lives, because how else would you visit a certain site?

Drake 03-12-2005 06:07 PM

I think domains will be around for awhile. The net is still so young and many domains still haven't realized their potential.

Yep, keywords will be back around that time (I wonder who'd be the managing authority), which will make .coms pointless.

Ooh, house in Los Angeles. Must be very proud.

:1orglaugh

It doesn't mean you can't make a fortune from it, I'm just saying that I think it will be phased out and we will be introduced to a different protocol. I think the keywords system will be back. I'm also making money thanks to freakin .coms, but it doesn't stop me from facing the reality that it won't be here forever.

It's a freaking http protocol, you keep forgetting that. A new one will be introduced eventually... Hopefully you will cash out before that happens :winkwink:

Sams_gfy 03-12-2005 06:16 PM

10 years... I think, before www domain ext, we will say "protocol"

It aint arrogance, its just the way I am!

either way if you think companies like Google, Yahoo, and so forth are going to let .coms be obsolete you're smoking some good shit.

pornguy 03-12-2005 06:22 PM

I think that the SE's and the Net will be so big, that everything will work like an auto fill in form. as soon as you start to type. or maybe speak, with will start moving that way.

They won't be able to control it, it'll just be the freaking protocol that will become more and more popular. Hey, this is just my estimate, nothing more than that. Might happen, might not. In 12 years from now we'll freakin tell the computer 'bank of america' and our account will pop up. .coms might still be used, but they will have much less value.

EDIT: we will live in a world of "I'm Feeling Lucky" (just like Google's idea of how it works), which is similar to the Keywords approach used long ago.

[QUOTE=azguy]Ooh, house in Los Angeles. Must be very proud.

To be perfectly honest with you a regular house in los angeles is equal to a phat house where you live in arizona. Real Estate is prime here in los angeles, and your laughing about it, that goes to show how much you know.Idiot alert here
