Why are people so concerned with board "spam?"

Why do people find the need to care if a program tells you they updated their site?

Why do people care if a sale's rep contacts you about a new deal?

Why don't people want to know what is going on?

Are people intimidated that the "would you hit it" threads will find the slums of page 2?

I am not talking board owners either. General posters.

I want personal accounts of why people find the need to be bothered. Personal experiences of how these things have contributed to decimating your life.

Juicy D. Links 02-02-2005 12:09 PM

Simple..... they are nothing but "Simpletons"

Word.

I am about to start 10 fashion threads. Lets see what they have to say about that!

StuBradley 02-02-2005 12:15 PM

If you let the spam flow free this board would be useless. It would be 98% spam threads.

:2 cents:

true. i feel the same way.

Jayo 02-02-2005 12:18 PM

cuz Board SPAM is wack! It makes the board really unappealing if there is nothing but spam

X37375787 02-02-2005 12:20 PM

See Cory, back in GFY's days, the rule of the land was "announcements only by established webmasters"... nowadays no cows gives a mooh about it anymore.

NickPapageorgio 02-02-2005 12:20 PM

It makes people feel important when they call out "spam". It's the same reason people post timeline pics, tell you that your news article has already been posted 2 times in the past or post about how much money they made today. It makes people feel bigger. Some people grasp at anything to really "stand out" on this board. I suppose it is because there are so many people here and so many things going on at one time. Basically, it's a cry for attention. Ofcourse that's my opinion and you know what they say about those...

He's talking about the board USERS, not admins.

Read the fucking title. The users don't make the rules here :warning

Irrum 02-02-2005 12:21 PM

You know I was thinking that today, isn't part of posting on the board, is to get some business as well as getting to know people in the industry. I know I want to know about changes to programs I do business with and I like to look at replies to it.

Wow. You expanded and I agree wholeheartedly.

I am glad to see that my logic is not lost on everyone.

Read 5 spam threads a day or 5 drama threads? Which has the potential to make you more money?

Why are we here?

So you can read?

You want to learn?

I am starting to understand my own logic now :)

Glad my thoughts seem not lost on everyone.

Good to see you in Vegas by the way.

Juicy D. Links 02-02-2005 12:25 PM

I like to be spammed per se , lets me know what new with the programs and such

Not calling you out. Just starting a topic...

What is the 98% filled with now?

Again, this isn't from the board owner perspective, obvious logic exist there...I am remarking on the constant "spam" post in others threads...that is the difference...

vivency-AdamQ 02-02-2005 12:26 PM

I agree that sometimes it is great to know everything that's going on, but sometimes people take it too far and then the board is contentless.

I personally enjoy clicking on promotions, just to see what they are and such.

Haha...me too.

Man, I used to get 10 media tickets mailers a day plus a phone call and I never once called them out or even remarked in the bashing threads!

They were a bit much, no doubt. But damn, why pounce on a sale's rep for emailing you or posting a thread?

No one has to click on it!

Well you have to consider the audience and what this board is truly trying to accomplish with it's existence. Sure it sounds great to say this is a business board but the reality is that it makes the owner cash money and that is the #1 priority. Page views = cash from advertisers. Real business gets boring to surfers. They would much rather see huge tits or listen in on 2 guys having a shit fit over something and creating drama. That's why you don't see too many surfers over in "Traffic trades and Gallery requests" :winkwink:

Sheri Santiago 02-02-2005 12:32 PM

Program notices do not bother me, I read them for the most part, however, cory, I have yet to see you come through on your promise of all these fashion threads. Get out the pink dog, dammit.

Yo Adrian 02-02-2005 12:32 PM

I amazes me as well Cory.

We are here to be involved in this industry and to make money through it.

Yet so many panic at every instance of an announcement, most having to do with efforts from the announcing company to make affiliates more money!

I hear the same gripes when it comes to discussions of exit consoles... webmasters who work countless hours to earn a living despise consoles, which directly help them and others to earn a living.

It's as if their personal preferences are more important to them.

SleazyDream 02-02-2005 12:34 PM

fucking idiot spammers.

if you were someone in the industry or if you had more than 12 iq points you wouldn't need to do something sooo fucking stupid and simple as a spam announcement on a message board.

grow a fucking BRAIN.

idiots.

candyflip 02-02-2005 12:34 PM

It doesn't bother me until I've seen something a million times.

seeric 02-02-2005 12:35 PM

basically they all feel that they are too good to have to hear you. they think they are eleet and shouldnt be bothered with new exciting business offers.

sucks. imagine the money that could be made if people took two seconds to analyze a new opportunity.

case in point, two posts up. perfect timing to prove my point.

maybe because there are hundreds of affiliate programs nowadays and if most of them would post on GFY about evey new site they launched, this board would become completely worthless......

Now there is some spam I could truly do without and that is the mindless outsourcing spam. I understand they are trying to make a living aswell but when they use the same copied and pasted line every single time they respond to a thread, that drives me crazy.

"Sure we can help you with that. Hit me up and one of our designers can bla bla bla..."

I fully agree with what you're saying though. It's like people don't want to hear about something new that could possibly be a lucrative money maker for them. It's like cutting off your nose to spite your face. They are so blinded by being ready to make the "SPAM!!!" reply that they have missed what could have been a great opportunity for them.

idiots.

I think what Cory is talking about is more along the lines of program announcements and such. Mindless spam is another animal all together. Just popping in and saying, "Hey guys, have you heard about this new girl, Mindy Melons? She is so hot and has a new program coming out..." <- and that is there first post ever. Those I can live without.

Program announcements I don't mind.

ADL Colin 02-02-2005 12:40 PM

In the beginning the boards were created
And the boards were without form and void
And the porn gods said "let there be webmasters"
And webmasters came. All at first saw the light.
It was good.

In time webmasters spammed
And spammed and spammed and spammed
And spammed and spammed and spammed
And spammed and spammed and spammed
And spammed and spammed and spammed
And spammed and spammed and spammed
And spammed and spammed and spammed
And spammed and spammed and spammed
And spammed and spammed and spammed
And spammed and spammed and spammed
And spammed and spammed and spammed
And spammed and spammed and spammed
And spammed and spammed and spammed
And spammed and spammed and spammed
And spammed and spammed and spammed
And spammed and spammed and spammed
And spammed and spammed and spammed
And spammed and spammed and spammed
And spammed and spammed and spammed
And spammed and spammed and spammed
And spammed and spammed and spammed
And spammed and spammed and spammed
And spammed and spammed and spammed
And spammed and spammed and spammed
And spammed and spammed and spammed
And spammed and spammed and spammed

And then the porn gods became angry

The path of the righteous man became beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil spammers.

Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of spam darkness.

For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children.

And the gods will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy his brothers with advertisements.

And you will know he is the Lord when you are banned.

Worthless when compared to...

...would you hit it threads? Or I made XX dollars this week? Or I can't stand so & so, I am gonna kick their ass? Or check out this pic of me at taco bell the other day?

Would you hit it threads don't have the capability of making me richer. Program announcements do...

But like I said. This is only my opinion.

Program announcements I don't mind.

There would be less advertisers. I wouldn't advertise if I could make announcements.

Its not fair to the sponsors of the board, If thats the case why pay to be a sponsor

Right but I think that goes back to Cory's original question where fellow webmasters/surfers take it upon themselves to freak out over the spam. If it's unfair to the sponsors that do pay then they should take up issue with the board management and the spam should me moderated out.

I am a new guy to this biz though so I am sure I don't understand how everything ticks.

Life isn't supposed to be fair. Also, advertisers pay for continued exposure on a board, not just for the chance to make announcements every now and again.

Oh, and big sigs.. advertisers get to fly big sigs :winkwink:

Exactly.

No one is questioning "advertisers" or "Lens" having an issue
