Some remaining pictures from Asia. Hong Kong / Bangkok
So Hong Kong and Bangkok are both really fabulous places. With the exception of Bangkok cab drivers whom proved to be consistent problems. I got dumped off in the middle of Bangkok at cheap motels and suit dealers on more than one occassion by overzealous cab drivers with commision deals.
Both cities are overcrowded. Bangkok is full of cars, go-cart type transports and lots of maverick style motorcycles, all of which contributing to a pretty nasty smog situation. The motorcycle drivers soon became my favorite method of transportation; although a bit nerve racking, they get you where you need to go and tended to not try to rip me off. It can take over 2 hours to get across Bangkok with traffic. Hong Kong on the other hand was the London / New York City of the East possesing a culturally advanced feel. The precocious methods of transportation, dynamic and futuristic architecture and business persons afoot the streets all contributed to this feel. Here are a few pics from the Star Ferry in Hong Kong which is used to cross you over to the Kowloon district. The ferrys are more or less old boats that are slightly refurbished. http://www.surfelport.com/albums/album89/DSC00874.jpg http://www.surfelport.com/albums/alb...C00871_001.jpg Here is the big Financial skyscraper. It is waterfront, like all the buildings are. Hong Kong seemed to have a very modern feel to it, many of the buildings interiors had a new wave feel to the designs. http://www.surfelport.com/albums/album89/DSC00875.jpg |
Pictures from Victorias Peak in Hong Kong. A train takes you a top for a breathtaking view. I was extremely jet lagged at the time of this picture and still in my Webmaster Access attire.
http://www.surfelport.com/albums/album89/DSC00865.jpg Terrible picture but, if you look close, you will notice the girl adjusting her stance to the incline grade. The tram has angular steps for adjusting to the grade, hence she is standing straight up, consistent with gravity, while I am sitting angled back in my seat. http://www.surfelport.com/albums/album89/DSC00869.jpg http://www.surfelport.com/albums/album89/DSC00868.jpg |
This picture was taken inside the bathroom doorway of a chinese restaurant in Hong Kong. It was not an easy shot to get because it was very angular and small. It was the first sign that although Hong Kong is a modern culture, it is driven by traditional chinese peoples.
http://www.surfelport.com/albums/album89/DSC00877.jpg Here is a shot of the Hong Kong airport. Some of you already know this, but this airport is supposed to be the nicest in the world. It truely is amazing to be in. They move you through customs, security and ticketing swiftly and politely, not too mention the expensive shops. http://www.surfelport.com/albums/album89/DSC00883.jpg |
Soi Cowboy district in Bangkok, famous for the theme whorehouses. Although Bangkok has many scandalous districts that feed travellers illicit fantasies, this district actually uses themes in the bars. For example, one theme is a catholic school girl. It adds to the oddity of the street as you pass girls dressed up in many varying outfits as they punch in for their respective bars.
http://www.surfelport.com/albums/album90/DSC00977.jpg Trip down Soi Cowboy district on a motorcycle. As you will see, the cab drivers and motorcycle drivers do not speak much english. This district rose to infamy during the Vietnam war as stationed american troops frequented the strip before their assignments. The strip has appeared in many movies about the Vietnam war. http://www.surfelport.com/albums/album90/soicowboy1.mov |
Tuk Tuk driver takes Dan and I through Bangkok. The Tuk Tuk drivers are as bad as the cab drivers, always looking to take you where they have a deal. "Good Massage, Good Girl, Now!"
"You get suit. 100 Bath. Now. Good suit." The Tuk Tuks seemed to consistently break down when the engine went idle. I suspect the platform was a go cart engine. http://www.surfelport.com/albums/album90/tuktuk.mov Thai girl and myself http://www.surfelport.com/albums/album90/DSC00935.jpg |
A girl prays to the statue of Buddah. There are many Buddahs in Bangkok, one of which sits on a main, busy street whereas at night you see people on their knees on the side of the road.
http://www.surfelport.com/albums/album90/DSC00929.jpg I love this picture. http://www.surfelport.com/albums/album90/DSC00914.jpg |
The Sleeping Buddah. Because the surrounding tour path is so confined along with the Buddahs massive size, the piece is a tough photo. I did the best I could. Looking throughout other photography sites, it appears my angle was utmost logical and consistent with others.
