Caught driving without auto insurance...

My girlfriend was pulled over by the cops today and was caught driving without auto insurance. She is a new driver with perfect record and the best rates she could get were over $400 per month for a used 1999 Ford Taurus and there was a few months she could not afford it so they canceled her policy due to non-payment.

She had no idea how serious it was to drive without insurance but knew she was taking a chance every time she would drive.

It turns out that its a $5,000 - $25,000 fine with possible jail time. She was given 72hrs notice to prove she has auto insurance.

Does anybody have any good advice?

Juicy D. Links 06-05-2004 06:56 PM

she should have blown the cop to get out of it :2 cents:

RightHandMan 06-05-2004 07:02 PM

shes gotta have the old insurance cards...all she has to do is go down to the Popo station and show it to them, even if its cancelled they just make a copy then check a box on a computer, trust me...i used to do work @ the registrars office...

Diabolical Cord 06-05-2004 07:02 PM

That's an awfully big fine. Where does she live?

She has the old card but the policy is expired.

Mr Pheer 06-05-2004 07:04 PM

Shouldnt be driving with no insurance, period.

That fuckstick that ran over me while I was on my bike didnt have insurance either. So everything that my medical insurance didnt cover I had to pay out of my pocket, plus my lost income (easily over $50k) that I'll never get reimbursed for. Total damages over $100k and the fucker shouldnt have been driving in the first place without insurance.

I have no sympathy for her. Whatever she gets is way better than being in an accident with no insurance.

SureFire 06-05-2004 07:06 PM

The fine seems kind of high but why drive if you can not pay the insurance.

What was she pulled over for?

Shit dont work like that in Illinois, you go to court and have to prove you had insurance at the time in question, say you didnt have the insurance card at the time being pulled over, you have to show old and new cards and how they overlap and you were insured thew whole time :2 cents:

Pulled over because her license plate sticker was expired. She cant get a new sticker without a valid policy number.

RightHandMan 06-05-2004 07:11 PM

about the only thing you can do is go to an insurance agency and talk 1 on one with the agent... explain your situation to him/her and try to get sympathy, then slip 100$ to the agent and hope they go to bat for ya... Its not unheard of...and im sure the agent will be more than happy, its a few keystrokes...:)

Babagirls 06-05-2004 07:11 PM

Nor do I, but I pay to be covered if the looser doesn't have insurance. Hate paying it but you never know.:)

and if i knew i was driving un-insured and taking that risk, i would have surely made sure that my stickers and plates were up-to-date ...thats the #1 reason people get pulled over....and would have also checked my brake lights and headlights too.

she should have been more careful. :helpme

Sorry she is an idiot and shouldn't be driving. If you cannot afford driving; don't drive :)

Yeah I got a judgement... he has no assests to attach

He will go to trial soon for the felony hit and run and the judge will order him to pay restitution, I guess out of his prison wages.

I have a lawsuit against uhaul but they are just a thrid party and although they will have to pay, its not expected to be more $15k - $30k

The insurance industry in Canada is much different than in the States. The average joe that is a new driver can barely afford to drive in this country. Statiscics show that over 30% of Ontario drivers do not have auto insurance.. they are legaly robbing us!

Stillblack 06-05-2004 07:21 PM

she took the risk now pay the fuckin piper.
It happend to me I knew the risk when my ass was caught it cost me 1700 and a weekend in jail. Now I don't shit without checking the date on my policy. If she can't afford to drive then walk. Some ass without insurance hit me and I am still paying for the cost.

i have never heard of an insurance agent risking his license for 100 bucks :1orglaugh My dads sister is our state farm agent and she makes 6 figures for the last 20 years, I dont see anyone doing some insurance fraud for 100 bucks, live and learn

Worldnet 06-05-2004 07:22 PM

One year in jail here for that offense. They don't play around anymore.

not talking about statefarm, and progressive. Im talking about the rinkydink local places...they are a dime a dozen in large metropolitan areas like here in Boston...im sure its the same way in CA...

CamChicks 06-05-2004 07:27 PM

Something I read recently that interested me . .. in New Zealand (not sure where else) they don't require you to pay ludicrously high liability insurance. You can insure your property (car) against damage, but because they have free public health care it takes all the lawyers right out of the equation, and means you can't sue for profit. Great fucking idea! Occasonal car accidents are inevitable, and even the party we call 'at fault' usually didn't do anything criminally wrong. But yet we still waste all this money on the courts and employing lawyers and supporting insurance companies.. why? because our government has corporate friends to subsidize?

I suppose but insurance fraud aint no joke:2 cents:

UniqueMovies 06-05-2004 07:29 PM

I was also thinking I could scan her old card and change a few numbers and reprint it.. But then if its not perfect and they find out its fraud. That would make a bad sittuation even worse.

Dont fucking do ANYTHING like that. Want to go to jail for a girlfriend? Think she wont be fucking your friends while you're in jail? Think she will be waiting when you get out?

Its her problem, let her deal with it. Fuck her friends while she's in jail.

My insurance on the same car in Canada was half the cost of what it was in the states. I paid $250 a month US to progessive in the states and only paid $125 a month in Canada.

It depends on where you live, in the States and in Canada.

angeleyes 06-05-2004 07:39 PM

I'm sorry you are going through that, but the fact is: you drive without insurance, you are breaking the law (in most states) so expect to get stung.

I used to drive a pile of shit with a value of 1500 and yet I paid 120/month and I was 30 at the time, no tickets, lived in a super nice area (they rate according to the zone you live in as well)....

Insurance companies suck, but you need to pay! I learned that the hard way when I lived in an apartment over in N. Lauderdale 8 months ago and had it broken in to...... my brand new laptop, cameras, cellphones, checkbook, etc were stolen. I now have insurance on everything!!! Yeah, it IS a rip off, but sort of one of those things you need. If I would have paid for renters insurance, I would not have been out of over 7k worth of stuff without any replacement money. My boss was kind enough to purchase and loan me a laptop to use soley at home, etc, but I learned my lesson. I'm now insured up the ying yang!!!! Car, Home, Health, Life, etc.
