Burning DVD's is this illegal?

I hear both things, but say I rent a movie, or get one from a friend or whatever, and I decide to burn it so I can watch it later (not disribute or sell it) Does anyone KNOW wheather this is in fact illegal or not?

Does it really matter? I'm thinking that unless you live with an FBI agent, your chances of getting caught are very slim. The real question is how you feel about making copies of movies you didn't pay for.

yes its highly illegal and when you start copying movies there will be a secret mssg send to fbi headquarters telling them you are thrief and that you do real bad stuff including jerk off to porn on the internet....

on that note, i burned 4 DVDS today alone

Fuck the Law, thas just a bunch of pussies telling what you can and cant do...

Kinda like how alcohol was illegal during prohibition, ya they all stopped drinking

i dont have lots of money, but im a movie addict. so if i know a friend's got a flick that i like, i go, could i have that burned? they usually agree. in turn i loan my copies to others, sort of to return the favor. but if i do have money i usually buy the original. if you sell it, its illegal. otherwise, if its just for private viewing i dont think youd get caught.

Vitasoy 06-03-2004 08:59 PM

Technically illegal yes, it's more of a moral issue though.

Very true, As much as Id like to just burn a closet full of movies that is fucked up to the people that sweat blood into producing the movies. Then agian look at kazaa, new world I guess. But yes definitly a moral issue ;\

stev0 06-03-2004 10:52 PM

Yes, it's illegal, but will you ever get caught? probably not...

Cloner 06-03-2004 10:54 PM

You can still do it, but it's not legal. All you need is the program DVDXCopy and a free little program called DVD43 that removes the encrypted data from the DVD so DVDXCopy can copy it. Not that I have the programs or copy DVDs :)

Sweat blood into producing the movies? hah, yeah right... any movie that makes it into a video store or onto your PC has already made millions for the company producing it.

If they were true "artists", whether it be music or movies, they wouldn't care about the financial gains, they would be happy that more people were affected by their creations.

TDF 06-03-2004 10:55 PM

i have the 5 movie netflix program and burn flicks all the time

There is better ways :) you could rip the dvd into a .iso and use pinnacle instant copy to compress it (so it fits onto one DVD-R), then burn.. DVDXCopy often requires 2 discs.

(all hypothetically of course)

Triple 6 06-03-2004 10:56 PM

dvd x copy platinum.

but i find i cant burn EVERY dvd.... real pain in the ass cuz my pc pretty much locks up while i run the program and find out an hour + later the dvd wont fucking copy

pimplink 06-03-2004 11:07 PM

I'm not really sure but I think nobody can arrest you as long as you don't make it your business and gain financially from it...

{fusion} 06-04-2004 12:35 AM

sucks if your films get scratched, if you own it, you should be allowed to make a backup.

that sucks as dvds do get fucked real easy

mardigras 06-04-2004 01:31 AM

DVD companies should have a program where you can return a damaged disc with a nominal fee for replacement.

SnM Productions 06-04-2004 09:55 AM

I use two different programs.. both work fine.. 1 click DVD copy (which you'll need the afformetioned DVD43 running while copying.. 1 click compresses all info to one disc, also gives you the option of stripping the extra audio tracks to save space.. (I don't really need french or spanish) also DVD Cloner II is great.. has all the same features + it will copy your DVD games, not that I rent those and copy them either or anything...

Check out http://www.afterdawn.com/tools/dvd_layer.cfm

It'll tell you if movies are single or dual layer. All the burners and media out now will only burn the single layer ones. Team that up with Netflix and you're set.

Sosa 06-04-2004 04:46 PM

Anyone doing this that can fit pretty much any movie onto 1 DVD-r can I hit you up on ICQ? I've got a few questions :)

It is illegal but as long as you dont sell them no one should notice. I dont think normal cops look for that shit anyway.

If your conscience is getting to you, then here's a simple solution... burn the copy to a rewriteable media such as DVD-RW. Once you've watched it you can erase it or overwrite it with something else. No chance of being caught red-handed with 200 DVD-Rs :)

I have a DVD recorder (like a VCR) so I just record movies off pay TV, and then burn them to DVD-R via the PC. I'm pretty sure *that* is legal since it's for personal use only.
