STANLEY CUP FINALS: Does anyone REALLY care?

I am a huge hockey fan, and while I am still bummed out my Flyers didn't go, I normally would watch the finals.

But this year, I really don't give a shit about watching. Seems like such a snoozefest.

Even last year, I had reason to watch...seeing if the underdog Mighty Ducks could become champions.

This year? Who really gives a shit who wins? I predict this is going to be the lowest rated Cup Finals EVER.

Would have been at least interesting if the Flyers made it, and I am sure the NHL would agree with that. But they choked as usual, so we are left with Tampa Bay in the finals against a strong underdog like Calgary. I am not Canadian, but I think I'd rather see them win it...but I'll find out on the news, I suppose....

Spunky 05-26-2004 06:53 AM

Well I would care if my team was in but good to see a Canadian team in it.I still leave it on in the background

Trax 05-26-2004 06:54 AM

no
i dont care at all

maxdaname 05-26-2004 06:56 AM

GO FLAAAAAAMES!!!!
I'm not too excited though, I predicted the Flames would win the cup, but they we're suppose to play the Leafs or Habs.:(
Tampa Bay pisses me off!

StRoGE 05-26-2004 06:58 AM

So last year you had a reason to watch because there was an underdog, but this year you dont?
Then you go on to say Calgary is an underdog...

If the series is anything like game one it will KICK ASS. It was an awesome game, and not just because the flames killed tampa.
It was wide open, hard hitting hockey. It was great to watch.

Corleone 05-26-2004 07:01 AM

never heard of a stanley cup

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINALS ARE TODAAAAAAAAAAY!

Game starts in 5 hours! :thumbsup

The Ducks were interesting to watch last year because they took down the toughest teams with ease. I respect Calgary for being a 6th seed to make it to the finals, but not enough to spend time watching them play.

I am sure it was a great Game One. But the people who are still watching are most likely fans of either team to some extent. I don't think anyone else (except Canadians who want Calgary to take the Cup) really give a shit about the finals.

You certain you have a penis and testicles? I never heard of any man who didn't enjoy sports in some capacity. But hey, to each his own.

I love it!!!!!!!!!!!

scoreman 05-26-2004 07:13 AM

People give such a damn about hockey that the NHL recently signed with NBC for no money upfront. They will instead share advertising revenue with NBC. Compare that to the NFL which in 1997 signed a tv contract for $18 billion over eight years with ABC, CBS, Fox and ESPN.

Of Course you don't Care. No Bridesmaid really enjoys watching the wedding! :1orglaugh :1orglaugh :1orglaugh :1orglaugh

kbut 05-26-2004 07:24 AM

I'm just glad it's not the Devils, I'd rather watch paint dry then a Devils game with constant holding and a whopping 12 shots on goal.

Rangers in 2048!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You took the words right out of my motuh man! LOL. Vic was just writing a week or so ago about how Tampa "GAY" would probably be leaving to another city because this isn't a "hockey town". How does your foot taste Vic? :winkwink:

Because these teams bore me.

I do respect Calgary for making it this far (and probably winning the cup). Much props for that.

But I have no team to get behind. There's no team in the finals that I really care about or that I really want to win.

Even though I am an American, if I had to choose a team, it would be Calgary for the simple fact that they are scrappers who made it this far...

Mike AI 05-26-2004 07:33 AM

Sounds like you are sore loser....

Better luck next year!

digi 05-26-2004 07:33 AM

My foot tastes like shit. :1orglaugh I wasn't man enough to congratulate TB on winning a classic series. I was bummed out because the Flyers lost. So I'll say it now. Congrats on going to the Cup.

I will stick by my comments about TB. 20 years down the road (possibly sooner), when your team sucks again, and people have fallen off the bandwagon, and there no longer is interest in a hockey club in TB, they will move out of the city.

As far as Acid's comments about being a Bridesmaid? Well, true. As a Philly fan, you have to be prepared to have your heart broken repeatedly by your teams, whether it's the Flyers, Eagles, Phils, or Sixers. I got over the game 7 loss pretty quickly because I knew that we're talking about a Philly team here.

BUT, what seperates Philly fans from all other fans is that no matter what, no matter how much your team breaks your heart, you'll be back to support them next season. There is no such thing as a Philly bandwagoner. And there will NEVER be a Philly team that leaves the city. The fans won't allow it. I can't say that about many other cities (although they are out there), and I certainly can't say that about TB fans.

Glad to see you being so humble. :winkwink: Like I said before, I understand where you are coming from. I am a die hard Bruins fan. I was born and raised there - started playing hockey when I was 4. I moved to FL in the mid 90's.

This is NOT a hockey city by any means, but it has the potential to be.

I have a son that is now four years old. I would love to see him playing but the nearest rink is about 40 miles away from me. Not exactly a quick trip. I think if the management of the team is willing to spend a few dollars on some great talent, it could easily evolve into a hockey city.

I myself am not a Flyers fan, but my Dad has always been. He always tells me the stories of the "Broadstreet Bullies" with Bobby Clarke, the fights, the hundreds of penalty minutes, etc from back in the 70's.

I guess it's possible that the team will "suck" again, but then again this may be the boost that the owners and management needed in order to start really focusing on winning. It's a multi-faceted journey that needs a jumpstart (Like a Cup finals series) to get them moving.

Just 2 years ago I was going to lightning games... less than half the seats filled - you could sit anywhere you want. Different story now. We all know that owners mostly care about one thing and one thing only. Selling Tickets. They got what the wanted, so now it's time to start filtering some of that well deserved cash down to some of the existing talent as well as some future prospects.

:2 cents:

:thumbsup GO TAMPA!! :thumbsup

That's a stupid statement. Just because they are the best doesn't mean they aren't boring.

Just look at The Yankees, The Lakers, and any other team that's had tremendous success. They are the best, but they are boring. Doesn't mean because I don't watch them that I am not a fan.

Exactly my point, man. Band Wagoners. Any team with a faithful following will show up even when the team is playing poorly. They might piss and moan about it, but they will still be faithful. I just don't see it in Tampa.

Buy hey, good luck in the finals and in the future. Prove me wrong, and I'll admit I was wrong when the time comes.

cayne 05-26-2004 08:06 AM

It's a nice sport event. Like it more than the Superbowl...

PornHero 05-26-2004 08:07 AM

The game last night was great... Jarome Iginla's goal showed skill, determination and grit the way he came back and put his own rebound in the net after his breakaway :thumbsup -- plays like that are the reason i watch hockey :winkwink:

I'd like to see Andreychuk get his Stanley Cup ring :)

I don't know man. I've played over 20 years of hockey, and have watched my share of NHL (and WHA) games over the years, both on TV and in the Winnipeg arena when we had the Jets. The game I watched last night was pretty damn exciting, and of the best most intense level of hockey possible. Along with the Olympics and the World Cup of Hockey, you won't see a more entertaining game ever.

You sound like a die-hard Flyers fan who is crying about his team again not having what it takes to see the job through.

You might be partly correct with this statement. Although I was bummed about the Flyers choking in the 11th hour (see above posts for my extended view on being a Philly fan), these finals teams just strike me with such boredom, I cannot put my finger on it.

I said it before, congrats to TB for making the finals and being the better team this season. Now THAT series was a classic, and they edged them by the slimmest of margins.

This series will have to prove its merit in the next few games for me to pay attention.

Otherwise, I'd be better off going to :sleep

Oncle_Benny 05-26-2004 08:54 AM

i dont give a fuck! :321GFY

Mutt 05-26-2004 08:55 AM

i thought last night's game was fairly dull, which Game 1's tend to be. Calgary defencemen stood Tampa's forwards up at the blueline which is what you do to a team that isn't a dump it in and chase it team.

Lightning have to win Game 2 - though Calgary strangely sucks on home ice so who knows, they could go down 0-2 and still win the series.

amacontent 05-26-2004 09:10 AM

A real true hockey fan would total appreciate these finals for a few reasons ;

1- You have 2 teams here that basically have never won shit except for Calgary 20 years ago almost. Will be nice to see a new franchise win for a change

2- You have two teams with no pre madonna athletes who really care more about thier labor agreement than the CUP.

3 - Dave Anderchuck 1st finals in 22 years,

Ive been to 4 playoff games in Tampa this year and the fans are great.
Sorry Vic but the Flyers are nothing more than the Yankees of hockey who went out to try and buy a cup with all the star plyers... WHO DID NOTHING when it counted.

Amonte - Didnt do SHIT
Zhamnov - Didnt do SHIT
Roenick - Didnt do SHIT

should I keep going.. I s Primeau wasnt a flyer , theyd be out in 1st round

If Calgary bores you.. with probably the fastest skating team in the NHL now.. then you should switch to Tennis.
If Tampa Bores you... with the league MVP and quite a few other dynamic young players... then you should switch to Tennis.

This is nothing personal Vic, but this is coming from a guy who plays the game and has gone to arenas all over the NHL for the love of it. ME
