UK, Australia, and Canada are so violent. (Michael Moore)

OK, I know we have a lot of British, Australian, and Canadian webmasters here. Many of you have commented on the high US homicide rates. So why are there so many assault victims in your countries?

Maybe Michael Moore is right. Too much fear. You've been watching too much American TV. Stop watching Cops!

Seems that you're more violent than US. We're just better at finishing the job off. Don't bring a knife to a gun fight.

1. Saint Kitts and Nevis 3.0% (1999)
2. United Kingdom 2.8% (1999)
3. New Zealand 2.4% (1991)
4. Australia 2.4% (1999)
5. Canada 2.3% (1999)
6. Finland 2.1% (1999)
7. France 1.4% (1999)
8. Denmark 1.4% (1999)
9. Belgium 1.2% (1999)
10. United States 1.2% (1999)

P.S. Someone will say "your statistics are reported differently". Pretty lame without evidence. Oh, yeah. Go dig up some other crime stat. I have more too. Let's go!

P.S.S. Unlike you, I'm being facetious and intentionally controversial. Canada, Australia, and the UK rule. ;-)

Oh, and the French!

"Opinion polls indicate the French are putting an increasing sense of insecurity at the top of their list of concerns. And crime has become the topic of many dinnertime conversations. During a nationally televised interview on Bastille Day, President Jacques Chirac mentioned rising crime as the country's greatest concern. "People are scared," he said.

Chirac cited as reasons for the trend a "lack of state authority" and "lack of political will" to tackle the problem, a direct jab at the government led by the rival Socialist Party of Prime Minister Lionel Jospin. Chirac proposed a "zero-tolerance" policy much like that of Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani of New York."

When I was young and lived in New York I used to drive over the border to buy beer.
I will forever be indebted to the Canadian way of life. ;-) Besides my family is from Canada.

PS Why is it such a good thing? People write such things about "the Americans" every day on this board.

EviLGuY 05-24-2004 04:13 AM

I'd rather be assaulted and alive then murdered. :Graucho

What kind of site is Nationmaster.com anyways? I dont see any official ties to any government whatsoever.

Find some more corroborating sources.

The International Crime Victims Survey, conducted by Leiden University in Holland, found that England and Wales ranked second overall in violent crime among industrialized nations.

Twenty-six percent of English citizens -- roughly one-quarter of the population -- have been victimized by violent crime. Australia led the list with more than 30 percent of its population victimized.

The United States didn't even make the "top 10" list of industrialized nations whose citizens were victimized by crime.

Australia has never had a real gun culture.

Here if someone fucks with you you sort it with your fists like a man instead of a coward with a gun.

At least everyone is still alive afterwards.

So you condone violence and consider it "manly"? Now I see why you have so much violent crime! Did you get this way from watching too much American TV?

i'm from wales and dont find it to bad. not worse than anywhere else but there is a fair bit of fighting and stuff. i mainly blame it on the amount that people drink in the UK. i would say it is one of the heaviest drinking counrties at the moment and this has an effect on the crime rate. but if its just piss heads fighting piss heads then there not really much of a problem as you just leave them to it :1orglaugh if the drunken fights were not included in the statistics in sure they would be a lot better and people generally dont get hurt in drunken brawls they just get busted by the cops and put as a statistic to make the cops looks like they are busting more people ass.

No, I don't condone violence. I'm not a violent person.

But if it came down to it I'd rather use my fists than a gun.

But I'm lucky enough not to have to worry about gun violence.

How can the UK be compared to the US...? It can't. Purely on the difference of population size.

Fists? hahaha

Slapping is not using a fist, you little bitch. Who was the last Australian to win the Boxing Heavyweight Championship of the World (any Boxing Organization)?

Australians can't fight. They're bigger pussies than the French.

There is a whole science devoted to statistics and statistical analysis. You should read up on it, because it can answer your question.

Again, there is a science devoted to extrapolation of data from statistical sampling. It's fascinating stuff if you can understand it.

You can always get a best guess from stats and info, but to truly compare the countries, you would need them to be as near to equal as possible.

They can? Well then I guess there's no point in measuring anything if things can change. We should all just sit around a campfire singing Kumbaya and howling at the moon with the wolves.

The U.S. figure of 11,127 gun deaths comes from a report from the Center for Disease Control. Japan's gun deaths of 39 was provided by the National Police Agency of Japan; Germany: 381 gun deaths from Bundeskriminalamt (German FBI); Canada: 165 gun deaths from Statistics Canada, the governmental statistics agency; United Kingdom: 68 gun deaths, from the Centre for Crime and Justice studies in Britain; Australia: 65 gun deaths from the Australian Institute of Criminology; France: 255 gun deaths, from the International Journal of Epidemiology.
