AOL Has stooped to a new low!

I wake up this morning and go outside to get my newspaper. I pick it up (It's in a plastic bag to keep it safe from the elements). Anyways, I bring it in and low and behold guess what's inside? You guessed it - a fucking AOL CD.

This wasn't just stuffed in the bag with the paper. It was in it's own hot sealed compartment in the bag. I'm not saure if this is common practice where you live, but a definite first for me.

AOL will do anything to get subscribers to their crappy service. :1orglaugh

okny 03-31-2004 08:01 AM

I get like 3-4 cd's a month of that shit, i wonder how many copies they send out every month.

candyflip 03-31-2004 08:01 AM

They've got cashiers dropping them into bags as people check out at the grocery store that I go to.

MakeMeGrrrrowl 03-31-2004 08:03 AM

AOL is giving away a porche that was repo'd from a spammer! I dunno where the link is now, but I signed up =)

One of the guys who works for my father has a collection going. At last count he had over 500 discs. It's amazing how many different design patterns and promos they've come up with for the CDs.

media 03-31-2004 08:06 AM

I think you get like $25 per aol customer you refer....

Diabolical Cord 03-31-2004 08:06 AM

It must be working for them. Otherwise, why waste the money?

jimboc 03-31-2004 08:07 AM

Cup coasters are always handy:)

Newton - XXXAmigoz 03-31-2004 08:09 AM

AOL cd's make great coffee coasters and projectiles for neighbour hood dogs that piss on my lawn.

High Quality 03-31-2004 08:09 AM

Fuck aol. Those fuckers suck.

n3in 03-31-2004 08:11 AM

i put my aol cd's on the dart board, now that's fun

Too many!
That's probably why they had a record loss of a 100 billion dollar in 2002.

hydro 03-31-2004 08:13 AM

i wonder if one could acuse aol of spamming, i have called aol multiple times and told them to stop sending me discs but it never ends.

Good point. I bet they are one of the largest bulk junk mail senders on the planet next to Publisher's fucking Clearinghouse. Maybe we should file a class action lawsuit against them :thumbsup

cypocrypt 03-31-2004 08:15 AM

they did it here in NY once with the NY post...i went to buy it like i do every morning and when i was gonna pay they told me it was "free" sponsored by aol, and yes it had the damn CD inside..

shogun3k 03-31-2004 08:16 AM

fuck AOL, its a company made up of noobs for noobs. I always get those damn CDS.

Ash@phpFX 03-31-2004 08:21 AM

i remember reading on wired about some guys who are collecting the cds, people are sending them in from all over the world, and when they have enough they are going to take them (in a truck) to aol headquarters and give them all back

Cyborg 2.0 03-31-2004 08:35 AM

Its ok to for aol to spam the shit with their cds wasting natural resources
but to spam aol is a no no
:321GFY

there is a couple of sites which collect aol cds... u can add to their collection

Edguy! 03-31-2004 08:37 AM

I think I have an AOL 3.5'' disk somewhere...

Hustler DJ 03-31-2004 08:46 AM

The one that torques me is the little standup display giving away AOL CDs at US Post Office branches these days. Guess that's where they're saving the extra discs that they didn't junkmail me... but hell, if I'm already paying taxes and increasingly-silly amounts in postage, can't I *please* not get ad-bombed when I want into the gawddamn Post Office??!?!? :feels-hot

hydro 03-31-2004 08:49 AM

i should start sending out cd's like aol does except with sample videos, i wonder how many hits my site would get :1orglaugh

klik 03-31-2004 08:53 AM

i wish i had been collecting all these random aol disks over the years..
i've seen all versions come and go in 1000 different packages..
i got this one that came in a dvd-type case.. with this shiny metallic cover.. :glugglug

The grocery store and the post office all get paid if someone signs up using one of those CDs. So who is to blame for those, AOL or the companies who order the CDs from AOL to give away?

When comparing what they do to spam, it may be, but none of CDs has sent me a virus, or offered my 14 year old daughter to enlarge her penis.....

Paul Waters 03-31-2004 08:59 AM

At least when they used floppies, you could make use of them.

Maybe we need a law demanding they use rewritable CDs?

:rasta

hydro 03-31-2004 09:03 AM

in my eyes, aol is a virus. it fucked up my computer and crippled my internet connection :1orglaugh

erehwon 03-31-2004 09:40 AM

Superglue them to a 2 x 4 and take them to the range, sure beats shooting paper targets. :ak47:

Warden 03-31-2004 09:48 AM

Just the original spam, junk mail, that litters our real mail boxes every day. I bet those AOL exec's have some nice Porches that could be seized.

crockett 03-31-2004 09:50 AM

dude I love when they send the DVD style cases in the mail... I use them when I burn DVDs :1orglaugh

but I'd love to know what AOL advertising budget is..

emthree 03-31-2004 09:54 AM

psyko514 03-31-2004 09:56 AM

Collect all the CDs they send you and mail them straight back to AOL.

If I'm really bored one day, I'm gonna go down to the post office, buy a stack of address labels, a stack of stamps, grab the pile of AOL CDs next to the counter and mail them to random AOL-related addresses.

StuartD 03-31-2004 10:03 AM

AOL, now with 1500 free hours for the first month.

Matt 26z 03-31-2004 10:19 AM

Blame your newspaper for being an AOL affiliate. They are the ones who put that CD in there. Not AOL.

nofx 03-31-2004 10:32 AM

Yea, I hate getting all of those AOL cds. When I go into a store that has a box full of them for customers to take, I grab as many as I can and walk out with them and throw them away.
I look at it as taking away CD's that might have fallen into the wrong hands.

NinjaSteve 03-31-2004 11:03 AM

AOL and their CDs remind me off CNN and their pop-ups.
