My new doggy pics and some thoughts..

Ok his name is thumper(name they had him b4 i got him, so ill stick to it)

So far on day 2, he likes his crate only if he can see me or im in the same room.. otherwise he just cries.. he is too cute.. i cant walk him easily because EVERY PERSON wants to pet him.. yesterday at least 100+ women pet him.. yes 100+. i live in downtown san diego on market street right where the action is, so hundreds of people walk by everyday..

some girls pulled up to the sidewalk and asked if they could carry him.lols, he got carried at least 5 times yesterday.. i keep telling ppl he is bity but they dont care..

anyway i didnt want this kind of attention.. i just wanted a cute little dog.haha

I live on 21st floor and he pees every 2hrs so i cant make it.. i tried walking him but once he steps outside my door he pees on the floor in the lobby, elevator, etc.. i tried carrying him till we get outside and that kinda works.. ive also gotten him to pee in the tub a few times.. so im thinking i might just get puppy pads so he can pee when he is inside, then ill take him outside to poop..

anyway here are some pics.. hes around 2lbs, and hes a mix of Maltese and poodle.. 11 weeks old..and hes smart.. he knows a few tricks already :D.. helps that im working with a trainer :1orglaugh

i think its called the potty patch?? so if i train him to pee inside, but only poop outside, then maybe im getting somewhere.lol

Slick 08-22-2010 03:03 PM

The thing to me is that even though it's a pain in the ass, I think that letting everyone pet him is a GOOD thing, that way the dog will grow up to be a good social dog.

Nice pup

Elli 08-22-2010 04:20 PM

Super cute, but I would avoid the pee pads. 21st floor means you'll have to be pretty discliplined. For a rough estimate, every month of age is how long their bladder can be reliable in hours (ie: 2 months old, they can be left two hours between potty breaks). The problem with puppy pads is the dog learns its OK to pee inside! What if there's no puppy pad? What if it smells different because it's someone else's home? No problem! I'm allowed to pee inside! It makes proper housetraining later THAT much more difficult.

Good luck with your little guy! He's super cute :)

xxweekxx 08-22-2010 05:36 PM

yes ive been debating this.. but the good thing is he wont pee/poop in his crate.. like 5mins away he was crying, so i brought him out of his crate, and he started sniffing, 10secs later he peed, i corrected him, BUT it will take me 5mins to get downstairs.lol

thats the problem... i keep walking him a lot, but it doesn't stop him from peeing inside either.. my problem also is that right when i open my door, the elevator area is carpeted.. so even if i bring him out of my door, the second he steps outside, he pees.. he also peed on the floor of the main lobby of my building... its all confusing to him, way too many steps to take..

open door, wait for elevator, get in, wait, arrive at lobby downstairs, go out through double doors... this is potty training nightmare.. i cant have him peeing in the elevator/lobby area at all, so how can i correct him without having him PEE there first..

QUICK QUESTION: will a puppy pee/poop WHILE BEING CARRIED?

im thinking of just carrying him outside everytime he needs to pee/poop...ive talked to a few people and they recommend i just get pee pads and have him pee indoors, while some other people think thats a bad idea :(

Elli 08-22-2010 07:00 PM

Absolutely it will, especially if you're trying to interrupt a pee in the wrong place. It's like a human baby. Babies pee and poop all the time when they're being carried. What works best is a strict schedule. I found a great post for you on pee pad training. I've posted it below (can't seem to find a link for it, but you can find it on the Rat Terrier forum at Rat-Terrier.com and look for the thread "Potty Training Help! (Very frustrated and sad!)" in the Training section)

Here's a great article on crate training, which it looks like you've started :) :
http://www.humanesociety.org/animals..._training.html

"I'm not a huge advocate of piddle pad training, but if that's the route you want to go down.... it can be done. One thing I caution everyone about is not trying to train a puppy to both (piddle pads and going outside) because it's way too confusing for the puppy and being inconsistent in our efforts is not fair to the pup.

So the first thing you need to do is to decide on which route you wish to take with potty training efforts. (1) Do you want her to be pad trained or (2) do you wish for her to be trained to do her business outdoors. That's step # 1... a decision you need to make.

Assuming that your decision is to go the piddle pad route based on your initial thread... let's talk about that a little. The basic concept is that a pup prefers to do her business where she did it before... wherever that might be. I would invest in an x-pen ... which will keep the pup confined but also allow some freedom. You don't want to allow your pup to run free (and out of sight) before understanding where she is to relieve herself. Make sure this space is visible to you, and preferably in a tiled or easily cleaned area. You don't want your pup to feel punished or left alone in this area, and you also don't want to be cleaning up "accidents" on carpet.

At one corner of the confined area, place a piddle pad. These pads smell like pee to the puppy (not to humans though!!), which makes her want to go there. Over time, you can cut these pads down, but at first, use a whole pad so there's a better chance of your pup peeing on the actual pad. The pad should be as far away from their sleeping and eating area as possible within the space as your puppy will instinctively want to keep the sleeping and eating area clean. If you want... put the crate in there and leave it open so she can go in and out when and if she wants.

If you catch your pup in a squat off her pad, interrupt her quickly (not negatively - just a simple "ah-ah" will do), lift her up and move her to her pad. When she pees there, praise her big time. Clean up any mess off the pad quickly and quietly - being sure to use a urine smell removing cleaner.

As your pup seems to be getting the hang of peeing on the pads in her confined area, you can expand her space, but do it gradually. You may want to put multiple pads around the areas you want to let her explore, so that if she needs to go now, she can easily find a spot. This will also allow you to move her quickly if you catch her going off her pad. I think the key to success in ANY potty training effort is praise. Supervise her... praise her when she's successful in offering the behavior you are seeking. And remember to NEVER punish her for pottying somewhere she shouldn't unless you see her in the actual act of doing so. And even then... do it verbally with a firm "NO !!! " and never spank her. Not saying you do... or that you will... just saying I've known folks to do that and it can yield disastrous results.

I just added a six-month old female rattie to my pack. She's been litter-box trained. I don't do litter boxes, so I'm having to now REtrain her to go outside. At this point she stays crated a lot, but as she becomes more consistent with pottying outside, she'll earn more free time outside of the crate. It's good and beneficial to set boundaries like this for your pup. They need to learn what is expected of them at an early age. You can leave her crated if you want.. up to an hour per month of age plus an hour. So if she's 4 months old you should be able to leave her crated for 5 hours. It won't hurt her... pups sleep a lot anyway. Crates are wonderful aids in potty training.

"

Thanks so much Elli.. my problem is that my guy wont pee on his crate, but as soon as I open the door outside, he pees on the carpet on my floor..

if i had a yard, or my door led outside, potty training would be 100x easier..

When he was peeing on the carpet in the lobby outside, i yelled out No and stopped him, but before i got downstairs it took few minutes.. i doubt he knows the whole point..

its tough im not sure what to do.lol.. im walking him a lot and when he pees i tell him i praise him and give him lots of treats.. the problem is he PEES as soon as he leaves the door of my apartment, and it takes too long to get him downstairs..

ideally id like him to pee/poop outside.. i dont wanna use pads honestly

xxweekxx 08-22-2010 07:17 PM

also, this last accident, i knew he wanted to pee! he was squatting and trying to sniff and pee inside, so i took him outside, before the elevator came, he already peed.. what am i supposed to do in that situation?
