If soccer is boring then why do people watch baseball?

Most of the time the ball is caught via pop flies etc. Isn't that similar to the "boring" action with soccer? Still, baseball has a huge following and it was the US pastime for a long time until too many damned strikes by baseball millionaires and the rise of the Xbox/PS3 fucked its shit up a bit.

I don't think "boredom" is the real reason why football/soccer didn't take off in the US. Must be something else.

GrouchyAdmin 06-11-2010 03:40 PM

Baseball, there are two teams who change position.

When the one you don't give a fuck about is up to bat, you can get another case of beer.

That's why nobody in America gives a fuck about soccer: You have to keep watching it.

dyna mo 06-11-2010 03:48 PM

because it is a more complex sport.

SykkBoy 06-11-2010 03:48 PM

baseball is like a chess match
anyone who thinks baseball is merely someone throwing a ball and someone hitting a ball has never had someone throw a 90+ mile per hour ball near them...

it can admittedly get boring at times, but there are so many nuances to it that non-fans don't get...as I'm sure my fellow non-fans of soccer are probably pretty much the same...

I'm sorry, but even though I'm not a soccer fan - have you ever seen a soccer game? Fuck a broken nose or an owy rib. They get FUCKING NASTY in soccer. Cleats to the head/gut/et al.. just part of the game.

NaughtyRob 06-11-2010 03:52 PM

I played organized baseball from age 10-16, then played again in an over 21 year old league. I guess its what you grow up doing. I love baseball but I love soccer aka football as well.

shimmy 06-11-2010 04:01 PM

Baseball is way more boring than soccer. I'll watch the Soccer championship game, I can't watch any baseball game unless I'm actually in the stadium. Football is the only sport I can watch every week.

kane 06-11-2010 04:06 PM

For me it is all about the scoring. If you have a high scoring baseball game it can be 10 to 12. You can see guys hit 3-4 run home runs etc. With soccer a high scoring game is 3-2 and there is no chance of it being blown open. There is no grand slam or base clearing triple. With baseball, if your team is down by 3 runs you are a walk, a base hit and a home run away from tying up the game. With soccer, if your team is down by 3 goals, the game is over.

fatfoo 06-11-2010 05:25 PM

I think basketball is more interesting than soccer and I will tell you why. In the basketball sport, someone scores a point every 20 seconds or so. In soccer, sometimes you have to wait 30 minutes - 1 hour until someone scores.

Deej 06-11-2010 09:24 PM

same reason people watch nascar... which for the record is far more lame than baseball or soccer.

Chosen 06-11-2010 09:29 PM

I have never watched baseball in my whole life :)

Football/Soccer....Cricket...etc even GPrix ( if its a sport) are slow in part compared to Hockey :thumbsup but I think the reason some dont take off in the USA is simply down to the fact they have thier own popular established sports.

Football/Soccer is the fastest growing most popular game for teens in Canada at the moment I read.

good post... i never liked watching baseball till i was older and never played as a kid... play lots of softball now and there is much more to the game then the non fan understands... i enjoy watching it now its slow paced and i can work while its on and not get distracted like a movie... also reason these are the most popular sports is cause the cost to play is the lowest

Yeah i try and watch some baseball over here, but i can never last a full game. It just seems to drag on forever, and some games the ball hardly even gets hit!

It's all about the pitching in baseball, and that's what makes it a pretty dull sport to watch. Ok i get that it takes skill in the way they pitch it, and to throw it that fast, but c'mon, we watch baseball to see people hit home runs etc, not swing and miss the damn ball all day.

The fact the crowd at a baseball game look so damn bored, pretty much tells it's own story...

I'm Scottish. We don't do cricket. :pimp

We leave that to the English, who play great nations such as Pakistan, West Indies, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh :1orglaugh:1orglaugh:1orglaugh

Baseball is like chess, bloody boring. :1orglaugh

PornMD 06-12-2010 03:34 AM

What most people would say: baseball is more complex.
The hidden answer: because the average sports fan can more relate to a baseball player. There are no fatasses in soccer whereas there's a bunch of 'em in baseball, like one of my all-time faves T. Gwynn.

GatorB 06-12-2010 04:19 AM

simple 0-0 games. That = boring. kick the ball one way kick it the other way for 90 minutes. No one scores. YAWN!

digi 06-12-2010 05:24 AM

people who say soccer is boring because of low scoring obviously doesn't understand the game. There is so much going on in a soccer game besides scoring and personally I find people who focus only on scoring to be pretty dumb..

In basketball they score so often its more exciting when one team fail to score because it gives the other an opportunity to take a lead.. so isn't that basically the same thing?

Is American Football only exciting when a team score? Fans don't appreciate a good tackle, solid defense, great runs with the ball? its just touchdowns that matter?

what he said - football is not only about goals. but of course a 4:3 is usually more fun than a 0:0

IllTestYourGirls 06-12-2010 06:17 AM

each pitch can be a home run or an out. 30 mins of kicking a ball in the back field gets kind of boring.

BlackCrayon 06-12-2010 07:44 AM

people can say what they want about each sport,it comes down to growing up around it and it being a 'national pastime. the euros love soccer, lots of americans love baseball. who cares?

Caligari 06-12-2010 07:54 AM

Baseball vs soccer (football)

There are two main kinds of sports IMO, dynamic action and continuous action.

American Football and baseball fit into dynamic action, where one pre strategized play triggers a series of quick reactions, then its over, there is a pause until the next play.
Its the absolute test of order vs chaos theory in sports.

Basketball and soccer (football) are continuous action and in a period of time there are dynamic reactions but they occur in the flow of continuous action. it is continuous chaos with spikes of order.

So you have preplanned strategy with dynamic action sports vs. spontaneous strategy with continuous action sports.

I for one like watching football and american football, i do not like to watch baseball or basketball. baseball only if i am there at the game.

It would seem that americans like their dynamic action sports and the rest of the world continuous action sports.

A little kabuki theater mixed in, he?

NETbilling 06-12-2010 07:32 PM

For me, baseball is usually a snoozer and the least "team sport" out of them all. I love American Football, especially the NFL.

mattz 06-12-2010 07:53 PM

Amputate Your Head 06-12-2010 07:55 PM

Baseball is boring as fuck too. If I was forced to choose between Soccer or Baseball, I would choose the channel making the least noise so as not to interrupt my nap. They have as much interest to me as watching the 700 Club.

borked 06-12-2010 11:34 PM

I do agree, the France vs Uruguay match was goddam boring as hell.

Apart from that, I've watched the redsox play at fenway and I've seen liverpool play at anfield and I can tell you I would rather be in The Cop anyday, because the atmosphere at a football stadium cannot be beaten. 0-0 or not.

nope the whole world apart from North America loves football.

Like I mentioned before...17 million Americans play organized soccer. More than any other sport in the US.

It is a myth, that Americans aren't interested in soccer.

SpongeBub 06-13-2010 05:32 AM

I had to laugh when I heard the score from one of the big first day soccer matches in the World Cup - 0 to 0. Now how long did it take for them to get that outcome? Two hours? Jeez, that is why soccer will never catch on the the USA - we like scoring over here.

Another thing, there's a big cultural difference regarding the concept of DRAW games.

There's a big difference between participating and watching. I mean, almost all of us played tether ball or even tag ball back in elementary. Those aren't big spectator sports.
