Cocaine worth $1bn seized in The Gambia

At least two tonnes of cocaine with a street value of some $1bn has been seized in The Gambia, bound for Europe.

In addition to the huge haul of drugs, the Gambian authorities have arrested a dozen suspected traffickers, and seized large quantities of cash and arms.

Gambian investigators made the first arrests then called in British agents to gather forensic evidence.

West Africa has become a major transit hub for trafficking Latin American drugs to markets in Europe.

Drugs cartels are taking advantage of the region's poverty and weak security and judicial systems.

Agents from the UK's Serious Organised Crime Agency - the rough equivalent of the US FBI - helped discover the haul of highly concentrated cocaine behind a false wall in a warehouse basement an hour's drive from the Gambian capital, Banjul.

Numerous revealing computer records were also found.

One investigator closely involved told the BBC: "We're excited about this one - we've got all the elements here."

The BBC's Mark Doyle in Banjul says some of the Gambian officers involved in the bust are clearly pleased, if saying nothing in public for now.

I don't get how they can calculate the value at $1 billion... 814 kilos is worth roughly $16,280,000 - $20,350,000 based on a wholesale price of $20,000 - $25,000 per kilo which is pretty fucking high.. you could get it much cheaper in that kind of quantity.. Street value is roughly $30-40 per gram.. which comes out to $24,420,000 - $32,560,000 if you sold it 100% pure..

even at $100 a gram which is fucking rediculous, that'd be 81,400,000

to get $1,000,000,000 you'd have to cut that shit:
13:1 @ $100 a gram
31:1 @ $40 a gram
41:1 @ $30 a gram

I think it's in Bolivia you can hit up a coke bar for around a 100% purity. Read that once and wondered how many people die at those places.

WTF! In the UK you can get good charlie for about £50 a gram. You can find charlie for £30 a gram but it would not always be that potent.

there was show on Discovery channel i think when reporter got into the cocaine production facilities in Latin America. They showed workers prepping the coke it by grinding up huge blocks of it in blenders to turn it into powder. After running the blender, they would lift the lid and a fine mist of 100% pure coke would rise into the air. The workers then would inhale that coke air and trip their asses off.
