WARNING: Traveling to Australia with PORN on your laptop !
If you are Traveling to Australia you could be searched for porn !
Australian customs officers have been given new powers to search incoming travellers' laptops and mobile phones for pornography. Australian officials now had an unfettered right to examine travellers' electronic devices, marking the beginning of a new era of official investigation into people's private lives. Customs confirmed the new reference to "pornography" on the Incoming Passenger Cards and the search powers, acknowledging that searches conducted by officers may involve the discovery of "personal or sensitive possessions". Australia dont like porn because ?!?
What is with that people? |
Well, seeing as certain types of porn is illegal in Australia now, it seems sensible for the lawkeepers to search for illegal contraband, doesn't it?
|
What's about a constitutional privacy? I mean the right for a private life? What if they will reveal/exposure some sensitive private info while they are "inspecting" your electronic devices? What if I have some telephone numbers I don't wanna others to see? What if I have some docs with medical exam results (they can belong to me of to my patients)? What if I have there my private diary, private photos etc?
Fuckin' western liberalism and democracy makes me scared more and more... :disgust |

Just some hints... :
- use postal mail if you have any DVD's, just ship them to your hotel or friends in Australia - encrypt your complete Operating System and use a hidden partition for your porn - forget all p-magazines, toys or other related stuff, put all of that in a big box and mail it - use TrueCrypt > http://www.truecrypt.org - it's free :2 cents: |

When it comes to retarded legislation, I'm pretty sure the voting majority is too apathetic, indifferent or ignorant to do anything. Even if they did, most parties just grovel for public approval and follow up with whatever-the-hell-they-want. |
im not sure what is the point on banning porn on Australia

I wonder how would they search my hidden and encrypted volumines... Anyway, this is ridiculous! Australia is now worse than USSR. I say fuck Australia. I will never visit it till their fucked up undemocratic government step aside. And I really wanted to visit it one day... now, not anymore.

the fact that is it roughly two days travel for me to get there. this would be reason #2 why i wouldnt care to go there.
|
Australia has turned into one giant nanny state. It is a joke, and the joke is just getting better ... when you think the wankers in charge cant go any further they continue to surprise.
|
Say whatever you want about the US - it is still 100 x's more liberal than Australia.
|
What if you refuse access? You know... not give them the passwd. What then? Prison?

BTW, do the US laws really different? In Australia prostitution is legal, but many kinds of porn and even computer games are not. In the USA the same shit but vice versa. You think I'm wrong? P.S. I do remember the Soviet times... |

australia loves porn too

Same if they have strong suspicions you do have stuff hidden/encrypted. |

That's insane. So they're going to send you BACK to where you came from just because you have a laptop with you that you refuse to let them look at? That's ridiculous. What's the difference if you bring in a laptop with porn on it, or if you bring in an empty laptop, then download a ton of porn right in the airport after customs?
Idiotic. |

Drugs are illegal, border police look for drugs. Usually with an xray. Often without shoving anything up one's arse. In fact, AFAIK, they don't shove things up your arse, they have a clearl plastic lavatory and sit you in a room and wait for you to shit. Which, eventually, you will do. Explosives are illegal. They swab bags with a little cloth. Not anal fisting. \ Porn is illegal, so surely the law enforcers need to try and stop porn as well. Clearly, it is a stupid law. No one is doubting that. But I don't think it's quite the same as having a broom shoved up your botty. |

What part of porn exactly is illegal? Engaging in porn? (no one in Australia fucks?) Possessing porn? What if you don't 'possess' any porn but you just view it online? How the hell can that be illegal? And if it is, aren't they really saying that "The Internet is illegal."? |
Quote:
Prostitution isn't a constitutional matter in Australia, neither are the types of censorship or privacy issues you mention. Australia essentially has fewer 'safeguards' against such legislation owing to the lack of explicit civil liberties etc. That doesn't help when the Government is sees fit to create seemingly fascist legislation for every issue that crops up. |
Think some of you need to read the full article and not just the cliff notes, this has been around since September last year

And if my qualification is true, then wouldn't the customs agents be engaging in an illegal activity? (viewing the porn on your laptop) |

In terms of tangible goods, I believe the law applies more to the distribution side of refused material. If you try to distribute it, you're breaking the law. It goes without saying that customs will confiscate refused material given the chance. I believe the Government is still trying to set up internet filtering / censorship. The usual tactic is pretend to do nothing, wait for outrage to subside, pass bill on the sly. The implications of such will be extending the ban on refused material to the internet (in addition to a bunch of other 'unacceptable' content). Naturally it's the Government's duty to deem what and what's not appropriate. Recently:
Not sure exactly what's been written into law, but this stuff is on the table every month. |
Australia is beyond ridiculous; thanks for the heads-up. A buddy of mine wants to travel there, I will definitely pass this info to him.
|
Scary shit!
|
Well, they don't allow small-chested women pictures, so porn is just the next step. :)

my laptop always shows fake message "Missing operating system" after loading and waits for password but doesn't write about it... i don't plan to visit australia but I'm sure that australian customs will not be able to prove the fact of full system and data encryption on my laptop... of course i say that an hour ago in the plane it worked and loaded :pimp
