WTF post: Moscow putting up posters honoring Stalin!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100324/..._russia_stalin

"Posters of Josef Stalin may be put up in Moscow for the first time in decades as part of the May 9 observance of Victory Day ? the annual celebration of the defeat of Nazi Germany..."

Are we in bizarro world? Do people realize this psychotic tyrant killed more of his own people than Hitler killed jews? 10's of millions in Slave labor camps? WTF!?

Yes its great he helped stop Hitler, but the thug was just another mass murderer.

Cyber Fucker 03-24-2010 07:47 AM

Yeah, this is very common trend today. Russia and Ukraina rewrite their history to the new versions. So now bad guys like Joseph Stalin or Stepan Bandera who murdered millions innocent civilians are national heroes. While guys like Józef Piłsudski who fighted back Polish independence after 123 years unexistance on maps (divided by Austria, Germany, and Russia) are criminals.

Agent 488 03-24-2010 07:52 AM

was better times when the oiligarchs looted russia and left everyone else in a state of grinding penury.

Good example, many governments rewriting history (or trying) on a daily basis. I'd like to read about some Russians' reactions when these posters are actually up. I would imagine there will be some opposition.

Aye, you would think they would take the other approach and say "look, the japanese (insert other govt here) government did some terrible things back in the day, and we want to make sure this doesn't happen again, so we will show you how bad it was."

nothing worse than hiding the historical truth, cuz it will repeat..

Cyber Fucker 03-24-2010 08:11 AM

And it's even more amazing to see and hear it now because Stalin was not only exterminating other nations but the most of his victims was... Russians themselves! I can understand the cult of Vladimir Lenin who wanted to do right but it ended wrong, but things that did Stalin are unacceptable in any way.

I was talking to some young Russian's the other day, and they could not refrain from telling me how much they adored Stalin. I thought they were just messing around, but maybe not.

CDSmith 03-24-2010 08:42 AM

Will they also be having an "Ivan the Terrible Day"? Let the festivities begin.

Here's an interesting top 10 list.... The top 10 most evil men in history

Note that Stalin is listed AHEAD of the horrible guy Hitler.

outlook on Stalin with Russian mentally

we have to accept the fact that he is part of our history, any sane Russian recognizes Stalin as very harsh fearful dictator, power not to mess with. whole nation was on its knees
at the same time he would bring hope to the masses and was great organizer and leader
should Russians just erase Stalin from their history? i'm not justifying idea of his posters without knowing first hand how they are thinking to display them but Stalin will always associate with ww2 and post war period rebuilding USSR
no one in their right mind would want to wish Stalin back for any other generations
although there are some, few hard core fans of Stalin era who believe to make things go forward you need hard iron hand to control it to make it happen.

Serge Litehead 03-24-2010 09:17 AM

btw Russians don't judge dead people - its a cultural thing.

interesting perspective, how do people in general feel about Putin right now?
i get many mixed reports/opinions on him and the US media doesn't help.

there are mixed feelings about Putin even among Russians. for instance my parents think with any Russian government - don't expect anything good of it. some people love him some people hate him.
personally I think Putin is great and that Russia been very lucky having him as president and prime-minister. I look from relative perspective, what if instead of Putin Russia had someone else - Russia or world at whole might have been at worst and in danger. in my eyes one of the great achievement of Putin administration is that during his service Russia got rid of it's national debt and was able to sustain its economy, with out him whole Russia might have been stolen and sold of apart and risking nukes getting in wrong hands.
its a long way for Russia to go from 90% or more corruption to democracy. i think they're moving in the right direction.

hypedough 03-24-2010 11:00 AM

If you're surprised by this you're obviously not Russian.

My basic point here, bullshit aside, is the 'victors write the history'.. rule of thumb

Dude, in case you did not know: there's statues of Lenin and Stalin all over Russia.
A few more of them in poster form won't hurt anybody there.

aye, i will get back there one day, the islands rule, some nice ones on the US side too, just a killer area. And the inside passage...holy shite.
But the thing about victors writing history is that, we know the truth about Stalin as does most of the world. That will not be re-written. He slaughtered millions of his own people. Its just a fact.

Yes but they were existing statues from many years back, putting up new posters of the guy is amazing to me.

if that would happen in Germany they would arrest about everyone who's standing there. using the swastika out of historical/scientific context is a felony

i'm not saying these posters are good idea, but there are many elderly people who fought and strongly believe they won due to Stalin's leadership, they associate victory with him

if you would start praising Nazis now it would show that you approve world domination and dictatorship.
Russian people (minority) bringing up Stalin image only shows how difficult time it was and what kind of leader it took to ironically unite people get through it.
i'm not condoning Stalin, he was a fierce dictator.

Sounds like a total bullshit from a person who knows nothing about real life in Russia. Now let me explain the real situation.

The mayor of Moscow Mr. Luzhkov decided to put a few posters of Stalin for the Victory Day celebration (May 9th). Actually there will be dozens of WWII posters and only a couple of them will contain the image of Stalin. However(!!!!!!!!!) everyone knows that EXACTLY THESE few posters will be filmed and photographed by the foreign press and every news channel will scream: "RUSSIA GOES BACK TO THE STALIN'S TIMES!!!"

Of course this is not that the Russian president (Mr. Medvedev) want to see/hear. So he has asked Luzhkov to revoke his decision about posters of Stalin. But Luzhkov denied to do that. I saw his interview on central Russian TV. He says what he consciously decided to bring up a few posters of Stalin and he won't get back, because "he don't see any problem with them".

Mr. Luzhkov always been some kind of opposition to so-called St. Petersburg clan (Putin, Medvedev etc). So as for me, it seems that he is just gonna put Medvedev and Putin into some sloppy position. Why? I don't know. This is just dirty politics.

The answer depends on who are "THEM". Luzhkov has an old beef on Medvedev and Putin, so he want to bring those posters up in order to make focus on them. This will be a serious hit by the reputation of country and personally Medvedev and Putin. This is what Luzhkov want to do. As I told above, he denied to revoke his decision. Major of Moscow is a very serious player in Russian politics and he knows what he's doing...
