Ubuntu as main Day2Day work O.S.
Ubuntu as main Day2Day work O.S.
Hi there, I am considering using Ubuntu as my main OS and I was wondering how many other people here use Ubuntu daily? Coming from Windows XP- what will I find as the pros and cons of switching over to Ubuntu. Thank you for your time. |
Operating systems... what a bore
Much more exciting to fuck a whore But I'm not a trick and I never participated in prostitution I just bought lapdances from strippers, until I had to many "Dance, dance, dance till you're dead." - as they say. You can take the literal meaning if you want. |
I shoot girls in POV videos, so I do agree...
So... now back to my Ubuntu issue, mmmmK? U haz Ubuntu? |
I feel crippled every time I have to use windows... makes me work like 90% slower.
Been using Ubuntu for about 4 years, before that Debian, before that a few other distros... About 12 years experience running Linux as a desktop, so I'm definitely bias. I am impressed at the current Ubuntu release though in terms of hardware detection, ease of use, etc... Everything is so simple. |
I use it..its fast ,stable, plenty of free software, never crashes and no virus/malware issues.
May take you a day or so to get the hang of it but once you do l think you will prefer it to windows xp etc. Downside: A few programs will not of course run with it ..but ususally you will find an equal alternative. |
Thanks for those posts guys... making me excited to try it.
I just can't take the clunkiness of Windows anymore...I want to work as fast as my Brain will allow me. Can you suggest sites to get software from? |

Just go to http://www.ubuntu.com ..download it and go from there !! |
I did try the Live CD a couple years ago and I really liked it.
THANKS |
My Ubuntu lappy went on the fucking fritz on me. Like completely 100% fucktarded. But I am pretty positive it is a straight up hardware issue. I run Ubuntu as my main OS on my desktop too with no issues. Been running it for a little over a year now and love it. As soon as I gather the energy to figure out how to install on my netbook, it's getting the Ubuntu treatment too.
At the time I made the jump I was running Vista, which for a Windows release wasn't too bad imho. I was a bit worried aabout making the transition as a long time windows user. That's why I started out installing on my old shit laptop. I found the learning curve for basic use incredibly easy, and with time came more and more understanding. Quite impressed with it myself. Very snappy and user friendly. Give it a go in a VM if you're unsure to begin with. |
Any specific Webmaster tools you guys suggest?
And thanks Jew! |
I ordered a new system for my son, it came with Ubuntu to make sure the system worked.
He loves it and yes I am thinking to switch to it myself as well. |
We use Ubuntu for our encode servers and most work stations.
It works really well, that however is about what i can say lol Im the last man standing on windows (except for a few Vegas/windows stations. |

Using Kubuntu as daily OS here. Just Ubuntu with KDE instead of Gnome. The newest KDE 4.3.3 works very nice and doesnt have that buggy feeling KDE 4 had when it was launched. It is packed with all the ( free ) software you need to do your work as a webmaster. You can also run XP in VirtualBox if you need specific MS applications.
Good luck ;-) |
Is there was Photoshop for Linux, I'd love it too.
|
What about stats remote, does it work when putting it in the virtual windows thingy under ubuntu? Also what about programs like Photoshop, Dreamweaver, UltraEdit... are there free alternatives other than shitty gimp (instead of photoshop)? Or can I run all those virtually too?
|
I personally dislike Ubuntu and uso OpenSuSE instead.
It's more of a personal choice, so if you feel confortable with Ubuntu, go ahead :) |
Do the following work on Ubuntu:
Photoshop Dreamweaver ICQ SKype What mail client do you use? |
Ubuntu is great but I like Linux Mint more. The only problem is that I haven't found a good Roboform alternative yet as Roboform doesn't work under Linux.

The latest version of statsremote works on linux as well, out of the box, no need for any virtualization.

Btw does anyone know does ubuntu support mp3 by default?

Photoshop will work when using Wine but not the newest CS4. Also you will encounter some issues when using batches and I believe Bridge doesn't really work, so basically that sucks when you are a hardcore Photoshop user. I really don't agree with the people who say Gimp is a good replacement, but that is just my opinion ;-) Dreamweaver can be very good replaced by Quanta Plus or Bluefish. ICQ is handled by the standard multi messenger clients that come with all Linux distro's. Skype is available for Linux also. There are several mail clients available, I prefer Thunderbird Quote:

I've switched to Mint a few times, but the lack of Photoshop and Sony Vegas are what keep me in windows. For HTML I just changed to "HTML Took Kit" and it works like a hot damn. :) WAY cheaper than Dreamweaver, too.
|
I feel lost in Photoshop but can get all my shit done in Gimp super fast...

I used ubuntu exclusively for a while but its too restricting and theres no real benefit to using it exclusively as you end up virtualizing tasks you need to do in windows.
But if you just virualize the entire linux evironment using virtualbox you get the best of both worlds the stability and speed of linux and the buggy iffy yet surprisingly necessary windows environment If its not a matter of hardware you will probably have a better experience using ubuntu inside windows as a guest operating system through virtualbox |
my nutsack is running ubuntu... and it's a hummer

Unless you know how to run Linux/Unix flavored OSes.... I would highly recommend not putting this on any production machine, but rather on a hobby machine so you can tinker with it and learn it first.

Experimenting with an unfamiliar OS on your production machine is not smart....... |
Production or hobby machine is a moot issue when you use it inside a virtual machine plus its alot easier to learn when you go this route. The learning curve is not as steep when you dont have to deal with lots of hardware issues you avoid that using this method.

Absolutely nothing - |
Photoshop is also the major reason I'm still running Windows... plus I'm used to FreeBSD so I'd probably get confused! :D
